My display is black when off. My tv, pc, car dashboard etc too. Didn’t knew there are white screens when turned off

If the image is correct, the pill shape on the 14 Pro protrudes down into the screen quite a bit more. Either way, I'm not going to sweat any of this too much.

I'm puzzled as to why they didn't just make a smaller notch, still at the top of the screen.. like this:

- all i've done here is move the pill and hole up to the top, filled in the middle and rounded the ends like the current notch.

...Rather than moving it down the screen a bit, and leaving some active screen pixels above it, which really won't have any use.

Remember when the rumours reckoned Apple was gonna shrink the FaceID components & hide 'em in the bezel.
Or they would be the ones to perfect transparent OLED pixels to hide it under the screen.
Last year they moved the ear speaker to the bezel which narrowed the notch, but inexplicably made it deeper too.
Now they've narrowed things yet again, but they've kept them in the same spot and so we're left with...

ooh they're gonna software dead pixel the gap between the pill & hole. Why the gap at all? Why couldn't they join the 2, push it to the top and have the narrowest, shallowest, least intrusive notch ever. No matter what the fanbois say to fool themselves this is NOT improvement. It looks janky, poorly thought out & the product of a bad design. Since Jonny Ive left who is the design leader 'cause this (along with a lot at Apple) looks like the product of a directionless committee.
exactly!!

This would look the best. Just replace the ugly notch/faceid with touchid (either under-screen (like s22) or integrated into the lock button (like iPad mini/air)) and the "notch issue" will be gone.

I agree about getting rid of faceid and going with touchid, but the camera should be in the top middle. (or preferably in the bezel!)

Eh no, the most secure is the best, FaceID might not be perfect, but the competition equivalent is laughable. As for speed, it’s fast enough for me.
Yet has anyone here been keeping up with how security on face unlock on android has?
- don't forget only 1 android phone was released without a secondary Fingerprint ID and pattern unlock (only password/pin was available) and that was an Pixel model, cannot recall.

By 'most secure' you need to consider the following on iOS (as a long time user myself, still currently):

Apple Watch will automatically unlock the iPhone even with FaceID enabled or auto lock set to 30 seconds (the lowest). Just swipe up when wearing the Apple Watch that is connected within Bluetooth range and you're in!
^ if you're single and dating - be VERY wary of psycho dates or just super untrusting nosey dates doing this in your sleep!!!

You do NOT have to be awake/concious to unlock an iPhone wtih FaceID enabled. Just peel back the sleeping owners eyes and if only 1 eye looks in the selfie camera-array's location - boom you're in. This is with FaceID + awareness enabled.

Best Security is always limited in exactly 'how' it's implemented between all types of access.
example macOS could have THE best desktop security - it does - yet if the default admin password is super easily guessable - all that security means nothing at that point.

You haven’t seen the price tag yet! 😉
Good point! Though hopefully if that rumored larger sensor is an improvement to my photos and video I can use the device even more for professional projects, and thus rent it to those jobs. I paid off my 11Pro this way in less than the 12-month 0% window. 🤘

Yes, Apple does offer some options that trade a reduced security for greater convenience. Unlock with Watch is one. Unlock with mask is another. Users are free to choose the right blend of security and convenience for them.

This is my prediction.

Apple is going to have the separate Dash+Dot cutouts and will have digital camera and microphone lights between them. The iPhone will fill the gap with black when the microphone and camera lights are on.

It would also mean you have to sleep with your watch on, and be sleeping with your date, and there is always the option of locking your phone via your watch. I have tried this with my friend. Apple Watch unlock really only works when the phone is very close to the watch (like you have to be literally holding the phone in your hand).

It's no different from using an unconscious person's finger to unlock a phone protected by a fingerprint scanner (be it iOS or android). These devices are generally secure enough for normal everyday usage. Life is not a James Bond or mission impossible movie, after all.

They can simply replace notch/faceid with under-screen ultrasonic touchid.
"simply" 😄

So far the under screen stuff doesn't work as well.
And you would still need a place for the camera.
The underscreen cameras don't work well either.

Overall, the notch and the capsule are compromises where the downsides are minor and the upsides greater.

********. Modern ultrasonic fingerprint sensors (like in s22) work great.
Small punch hole cameras (like in s22) are barely noticeable. It's ≈7-8 times smaller and much less distracting than the iPhone notch.
notch/faceid has a bigger amount of compromises in a phone compared to fingerprint scanner:
  • more expensive
  • takes much more space inside the phone
  • spoils the look/design (looks ugly)
  • impairs the informativity (e.g. there is no place to display battery percentage or silent mode indicator)
  • can be distracting while watching movies
  • can be distracting while playing games
  • slower and less convenient when paying stuff with applepay in shops
  • it requires an additional swipe from bottom to unlock phone (touchid/fingerprint_scanners provide an instant unlocking experience)
fingerprint scanners are better in every aspect.
faceid is good for tablets where you can hide it in the bezel but not for phones. There is just no place for it.

Locking your phone via your watch is only useful in the above scenario IF you're AWAKE to respond to the unlock. So you haven't fully tried this properly - not in a deep/REM sleep stage.

Apple Watch Unlocks a connected iphone in the same room or home as long as in bluetooth range - OR on same WiFi access point. I've specifically gone through this myself and an ex personally. I didn't do anything wrong in the relationship, just a psycho/clingy ex reaching out for a long-shot,hopefully-booty-call which was denied when brought to my attention. Ex is an Ex for a reason and the recent one - lack of trust ;)

The difference with Touch ID is you need to guess amongst 10 fingers which is the right one :)
Watch Unlock you don't need to guess and also TouchID nor FaceID to unlock is needed.

Think this through, you'll see how right I am ;)
