I just hope the rugged is a full featured S8 in a tougher body and not some stripped back model like the SE.

+1.

It would be also nice if Apple found a way to make „rugged“ not equate to „bulky“. But …

48 mm is the new size.

… as I’m reminded of this rumour from Display analyst Ross Young, I‘m willing to bet the rugged one will also be the bigger one. Which makes total sense as for a model made for „extreme sports“ a bigger display (and a bigger battery) will be most important.

I would love a rugged version of the Apple Watch as long as it still has all the features.

If aimed at active hiker and outdoorsy types, I wonder if the UI would be tweaked so that the button and/or crown plays a more prominent role than the touchscreen.

I doubt they will, but I know hardcore runners prefer buttons over touchscreen.

Good point. That's one of things that attracted me to the Instinct. The ability to push a couple buttons to find what I'm after while on the move is much more user-friendly than trying to poke a tiny icon on a touchscreen.

I said this about every version of Apple Watch so far; ‘I want to buy it, please make the battery life lomger’.

My Samsung Galaxy watch 3 gets 5-7 days of battery life before complaining. Nothing fancyfor a watch face——just hour, minutes, seconds, day, date, temperature, RH% and lightning strikes.

Of course of I start to do ‘fancy’ stuff, the battery life falls. And yes, I’ve got the face display set to always on.

I really really want an Apple Watch (ekg) but not if I have to charge it every day.

Get that people don’t want thicker or bigger watches though (increased battery size).

Yeah, I picked up a Vivoactive 4s which has both touch and buttons for that very reason. Not perfect but the two buttons allow for a mix of both interfaces.
There's a fine balance, but I find the AW is still too touch driven for activities focused usage.

Round form factor and one week battery life without LTE calls? One/two days is not enough for me, its a watch I don't want to take it out every day in, day out at most!
I respectably disagree with the desire for a round form factor. I view my Apple Watch mostly as a small computer, not as a traditional watch. Other than tradition or fashion, I don't see a valid reason for it. Because round would be terrible for displaying information. You don't see a demand for round monitors, round TVs, or round books.

I agree with you on the desire for better battery life, but we'd have to give up functionality or size with today's technology.

Apple still hasn't figured out a way for the watch to charge itself using the kinetic energy of being worn or other means?

That would be cool....
You mean like the self winding watches - charged by wrist movement? "The earliest credible evidence for a successful design is the watch made by the Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet, who lived in Le Locle. In late 1776 or early 1777, he invented a self-winding mechanism for pocket watches using an oscillating weight inside the watch that moved up and down."

To each their own but I greatly prefer the rectangular watch shape over a round one. Round watch faces make perfect sense for mechanical watches but you lose to much screen real estate for an electronic watch. Most "rugged" watches today are massive so I am hoping Apple does give us a bigger display and battery on the rugged model. It doesn't have to look like a refined piece of jewelry. I'm wondering if the new ruggedized version will lead to people owning multiple Apple Watches - one for work / fashion and one for play / sports.

Yep, or somehow fueled by rage. There seems to be a lot of that in the world these days.

It's not so much the hardware, Apple is already way ahead of any competition. The issue is the integration of all the metrics for sports usage (intensity, recovery, sleep & hrs combination,...) that will make a difference vs. whoop, fitbit or Garmin. My Garmin 945 has been replaced 4 times in 2 years, so nothing to brag about, still with a spotless high quality after sales. The Garmin wrist based readings are good (not that good when compared to AW) but the package for training and race metrics is outstanding. Would love to see Apple being competitive in that field (and its not about being rugged....), I would definitely give it a try. At this point Garmin and Whoop complement well.
