as usual, apple late to the product niche party but likely to do it better than most. at least if you're in the apple ecosystem already. if price is similar to echo or home, i could see myself picking one up.

Apple doesn't have an AI, so they won't be superior in anything. And Siri is inferior to Google or Alexa. The only thing that might be better is the hardware itself but will be premium most likely.

hey, fully agree. iPhones blew away the smart phone market at the time and [most] everyone ended up copying them in return. same for the apple watch. go all the way back to their original GUI on through to laptops, tablets, etc. now i imagine they'll up the ante in the home hub speaker thingy whatever this new product category is called.

yeah, likely the case. can wish right...still a few days to dream before finding out.
Umm, Samsung started the gear before Apple watch.

as long as this isn't the reason macs will never be a homekit hub i'm ok with it. seriously when will macOS finally allow homekit command and control?

Before they try and sell a Siri only device, they might want to make Siri useful and actually work. Otherwise, what's the point?

Actually, yeah, they need to.

So I am betting that they did! I have faith. They must have. Either that or it's another situation like the lame "maps" replacement for Google Maps. Remember that long time Apple guy who was "shown the door" after Apple realized how lame the early Apple "Maps" app was? (Remember you could get 3D views of the Eiffel Tower - A lot of people use that feature - not).

Let's hope Siri has some big big improvements, or I myself might just buy into the negative story, and I am the biggest Apple Fanboy you ever saw.

What if it has a giant Apple Watch screen on the top? Come on, even the Google fanboys would want one then. That would be very cool. Then the killer app would be the ability to weigh things in the kitchen eg for baking. Just place ingredients on the top screen. In a dish of course!

I don't believe that Samsung started anything before anyone - ever. I'd bet on it.

I'd guess that Samsung heard a rumour that Apple was working on a watch, and then they decided to deduce what it could be and put their own dev program together only after sniffing out that Apple was headed in that direction.

I could be wrong - but that doesn't happen too often.

I hope its reasonable priced

Price is the last thing to worry about in my opinion. Make it worthy of ownership first.

There are many many reasonably priced tech products, but they are such a pain and waste of time that you'd have to be paying me just to use them. For example - Android (or even RPi based) "TV Boxes". They are constantly needing updates and yes they give you free TV shows, but the interface is painful, network security questionable, performance not good. But yeah for $70.00 you can have a TV box that gets all the movies free. I have a couple of them sitting there - unpowered and I don't really want to use them or spend any time maintaining them. How about those cheap "action cameras" - they are so cheap, it makes you want to buy one, until you see the picture quality isn't quite worthwhile. This kind of thing.

One thing Apple is good at is making quality stuff. Those new AirPods headphones are way overpriced, but wow are they ever good! I hope they make a Siri box speaker thingy that is worthy of my time. I am pretty sure it will be priced just a little higher than I wish it was - but so what - it will not give me as many headaches, and what's the price for that?

They must have some skunkworks AI dev happening - no? They are going to need it.

What about the new hardware AI chip from Apple? That counts as AI research results in my books.

I thought long ago that Apple should have paid for and purchased "Watson" tech from IBM.

I just hope it will be cheap and beautiful unlike the last Mac Pro. Software can be fixed with an update.

Siri works most of the time for me, but she needs some much-needed love. This would be a catalyst for that. A lot of people still hold on to the Apple maps issues but it is also pretty accurate now. No issues with iCloud either. If released properly it could only enhance the tight integration of all of the products.

I've been an Apple user since 1986, when I was 5. I haven't strayed too far from Apple over the years and still use a MBP and iMac in my pro use as a designer/photographer. iPhone, iPads, Apple TV is now our home entertainment device instead of using Fios or Comcast. I will say, Apple is falling behind in a lot of areas, Pro users, fresh and innovative ideas, and now releasing products years after others have been around for a while.

I think a Siri speaker is a great idea, 2 years ago. Now that a lot of people out there that would use a device like this already have Google Home or Alexa devices. One reason I didn't use Apple Home to control my house is because the devices I already had were not compatible with Apple Home. It would have cost me $1500 to get all the stuff to switch over. I currently use Google Home and can control my TV, thermostat, lights, music, outdoor lights, security cams and more. If Apple would have brought the speculated speaker out a year or two ago, then it might have been an option for us. With so many people already owning a Google Home or Alexa device, I just can't see them spending money for a Siri speaker and switch over.

Nice try Apple, but you need to step you game up.
The siri speaker isn' t even released yet, neither ios 11 with rumored siri enhancements. And you make it sound like the market of smart speakers already is satured.
There are a lot of people, and i mean a lot, that don' t have a smart speaker yet. the market and the race is still open and still at the beginning.

Sorry, but Apple brands are not considered cheap, I'm sure this will be priced fairly high

Siri - how is the weather today? - Today it will be 65º with rain in the morning.

Siri - when does it stop to rain? - Today it will be 65º with rain in the morning.

Siri - at what time does it stop to rain? - Today it will be 65º with rain in the morning.

SIRI - when will the sun shine today? - Today it will be 65º with rain in the morning.

Useless. Alexa does fare well better. Or the Dark Sky App. So how much good will these speakers be...? As useless as Siri.

Improved voice recognition is exactly what you get from AC powered beam forming mics always listening. You don't even have to try which was why Echo was so effective.

Apple always waits until the market has matured before they reveal a solution that the market hasn't fixed yet. In fact, the only product they ever released that did not follow that rule was Siri itself so let's hope they can fix Siri's shortcomings in both mobile and fixed speaker versions.

To be fair, Maps, Apple Music v1, Mac Pro circa 2013, the Watch OS v1, and I'm sure I could come up with a couple more with some more thought, were all released before they were ready and didn't fix anything already on the market. And in fact seriously hurt Apples credibility because of the bugs or confusion people they had with them.

Apple cannot overcome the laws of physics....sound...Music...pushes are...the smaller the speaker driver...the smaller the audio it provides...I suggest people go to a BestBuy Magnolia Room and listen to some real speakers....try the American Martin Logan Electro Static Speakers....then ask yourself...gee....maybe this apple speaker may not be so good.

Does anyone need "Real" speakers to talk to Siri?

siri could output to my Apple TV's but those are alot more expensive than a $35 chromecase
Well, you can get a refurb'd A1392 Express for $50 (direct from Apple) that is an airplay receiver and also a dual-band N range extender.

They have to compete with Amazon and Google right now...

Apple likes to go higher quality for consumer products and charge for it - all their products are more expensive than the avg equivalent products.

What if they come out with something that is comparable functionally to Echo (~$180 - 230) PLUS has the sound quality similar to Sonos Play 3 (~$375) or whatever Bose has?

Also, we don't know what their plans are with Airport Express/Extreme/Time Capsule which range from ~$120 to $380.

I think it also depends on the what they jam into the product...

Basically they usually aim for the 'upper half' of the common consumer market. If this is the case, it will be priced accordingly. Maybe US$300-500 and there is always the outside the chance that they'll go WAY higher, like they did with the Apple Watch... on the other hand, they may reduce the functionality and price (like AppleTV) to get more market share.

I understand that they usually go higher. But right now Siri is widely considered to be a second-rate product. They could also charge more for the Apple TV, but don't. I consider this to be more of an ecosystem thing that augments their more expensive products, but like I said, I was probably well off with my original pricing because I didn't realize Amazon was finally trying to make money, lol. They also might sell them in packs which would make the overall cost higher but you at least get more for it. This would especially make sense if they move to mesh WiFi model with this thing, like the Eero, but even that thing is really expensive, so who knows.

That's why I said I hope. Pricing it high makes no sense if Apple wants it to be widely adopted. People would want to buy such speaker for every room.

Why? There's barely any 4k content. Even most of the 4k blu rays were upconverted from 2k

Here's a list of 4K content currently on Netflix: http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/lists/4k-titles-on-netflix/

If Amazon Prime comes to the Apple TV as rumored there will be even more content.

The processing power is there in Apple's chips, and HVEC is becoming more of a standard. Xbox and Playstation both support 4K now. It's getting hard to find a prosumer camera that doesn't support 4K.

Since I got a great deal on a 4K TV six months ago I'm fine sticking with my old Apple TV until there's one that won't bottleneck my setup.
