It may be your accent or possibly how you make requests to Siri. I use it all the time. I have learned that Siri wants questions/requests phrased a certain way. I have gotten her to set appointments for me often, as well as search for answers to questions. I have also used her to send text messages to specified individuals. If the request is not phrased the right way, then she can't do it. Its a computer not an android from TV.

In other words, it's not even a useful or usable computer.... which is very true

Siri needs serious development before a product like this is viable. It's just too rubbish, even on iPhone, right now. Who knows, maybe they'll announce major updates to Siri along with this product. Might be a case of just 'switching on' new Siri, and suddenly she becomes much more intelligent for every body.

You talk as if there is no reason for Apple to lock down their devices versus having wide open at first.

Maybe people don't want a government backdoors, having their IOT's hacked, or just want their stuff secure and private?

But keep astroturfing that Apple has irreversibly failed, by all means

You act as though government/legal requests is a *TECHNICAL* problem. IT IS NOT! Apple's privacy policy has nothing to do with government/legal requests and warrants. NOTHING

Regarding hacking, when was the last time Amazon was hacked? Or Google?

But iCloud (phishing) was broken into...

My point is, your arguments are completely unfounded and have nothing to do with reality..... they're just justifications (bad ones) as to why Apple is so bad bad at AI and services.

When in reality, Apple is a private for profit company that has no excuse for not doing its job better

I think Apple will unveil it at WWDC alongside advancements in Siri and new APIs, and say that it's launching in autumn. This will give developers time to add support for it ahead of launch. Apple will again show it at the autumn iPhone event, maybe show something "extra" about it, and announce the pricing/release date info.

I tend to think that Apple will price something like this in the $99-149 range, and will want you to buy several for your house. I think such a device will also act as a mesh WiFi network, enabling better coverage throughout the home. This device will also act as a HomeKit hub, and having them scattered around the home will also increase range for bluetooth smart devices. It will also act as an AirPlay speaker, and it will be a good quality one. The secret announcement in September might be that these also act as wireless charging basestations, but that seems increasingly unlikely.

Here's hoping it doesn't JUST support WiFi. It needs to support multiple protocols, like z-wave, to be a viable alternative to other home automation products. It also needs a scripting/development model for creating complex automation tasks, not simply flipping a switch on/off.

boy there is a lot of negativity on this forum. While I will not likely be buying one of these devices, i think that Apple has continued to produce great products. The products from 4-5 years ago are great and have continued to get incrementally better.
Have they gotten so much better for me to feel a need to buy a new device every year; No. But that is fine. Saving money is not a crime.
Just like there is no reason to buy a new car every two or three years, there is no reason to buy a new computer/phone/tablet every year, or two years (or three years).

Why would anyone want a standalone Siri speaker? I already have Siri on my Phone, Watch, TV, computer and tablet. What am I missing?

I don't know. I think Apple needs to innovate faster, and have a broader market.
  • Most of my video is from Amazon, because the Apple TV required a vastly expensive accessory to work, an HDTV, before I had one. Amazon plays on more things than Apple does, so they have my video business.
  • Well, like if my Apple TV ever worked right, that'd be a plus. Not upgrading unless it plays Amazon video.
  • I had a library on Kindle way before Apple even considered that somebody would want to read a book on an iPad. Amazon owns comiXology and Goodreads and Audible, so pretty much literature belongs to them.
  • HomeKit is nice, but I've got an Echo and three Dots that are just as integrated with the Hue lights (ironically bought when they were Apple Store-exclusive) and WeMo switches.
  • Controlling Hue and WeMo work fine when I'm not home, without having to have an AppleTV for a bridge.
  • Despite all that, Apple Music rocks. They got there first with good hardware and media, and so I buy my music from Apple.
Probably the best thing Apple could do is form a strategic partnership with Amazon. Apple's hardware is fantastic (well, mostly), but they're really too slow and exclusive to catch people into their ecosystem effectively.

The product nobody asked for.
Well I'm guessing the majority of consumers couldn't care less about the Mac Pro so what's your point? Clearly people are buying Amazon Echos. It would be stupid for Apple to not compete in this market. If the sound quality of the speaker is good I'll probably get one.

as usual, apple late to the product niche party but likely to do it better than most. at least if you're in the apple ecosystem already. if price is similar to echo or home, i could see myself picking one up.
Apple prices won't be close to these.

Honestly the user-required part of these AI-assistants is where it falls down due to poor speech recognition and limited capability. I find that Google Now is the best at serving stuff up to you like: weather, traffic information, reminders, UPS tracking, news. I think the future of AI is anticipating your needs rather than you having to tell it what you want to do.

Of course if it ever gets truly 'conversational' like in the movie 'Her' where you can communicate with it like it was a human being that would be revolutionary. Imagine arranging your next trip with Siri in the way you would communicate to a travel agent, with all the back and forth. Hell it would even tell you that it needs some time to figure some options out and get back to you later. That would rock. Imagine and AI-version of Redfin and concierge services. Imagine if a Concierge AI could also integrate with real-world services to get you an Uber drive, get flowers delivered for you, meal delivery or dry cleaning. Imagine real world businesses intergrating into the Siri-As-A-Service so that they could deliver their physical goods & services to customers via this mechanism.

So many possibilities, but the underlying tech, primarily speech recognition and conversational abilities need to develop SIGNIFICANTLY.

Remember, Siri-As-A-Service is the next killer product for Apple if they can get there FIRST ahead of Amazon, Google & Microsoft. If Apple can develop the 'Samantha AI' first they win the 21st century.

I don't understand these at home speakers. Talking to technology is so cumbersome. Apple will have to seriously make some serious improvements and offer features nobody has thought of, otherwise its going to be a very niche market.

Got my first Alexa device, built into the ecoBee4 thermostat. Still shaking my head at how much better it is than Siri. If hardware is the issue, Apple needs to figure out why a $300 thermostat is kicking the tar out of an $800 phone.

You are absolutely correct. I would drop my Sonos Play:1 in a heartbeat for this. ONLY because I would like to be able to AirPlay from my AppleTV. I honestly don't know why this functionality hasn't been added to the Sonos...

It's possible Sonos didn't add AirPlay functionality because they weren't happy with the terms Apple gave them. That could change if Apple gives them a more enhanced competitor. Anyway, I've owned two Sonos Play:1 speakers since 2013 and they've been outstanding when it comes to playing my music and streaming various apps. I'm not really using Siri on my iPhone 6s so that's not really something to entice me to purchase another one of Apple's "not as useful as I thought it would be" niche products after I purchased my seldom used 4th gen Apple TV in 2015.

Looks like they found a home for all those unused Mac Pro Housings.

That's a very bad "artist's" rendering with multiple, visible clone patterns and a planar texture pasted on a cylindrical tube. I seriously doubt it will look anything like that, especially if it will have a screen/touch screen, as Phil seemed to indicate should be the case for this type of product.

Maybe it will be built into a 4K Apple TV with satellite devices available to put throughout your home. I'm not upgrading my 4th generation Apple TV until there's one that supports 4K.

I have the RIVA Turbo X, which has absolutely incredible sound. I might have been tempted to buy a Siri speaker if it had a screen, but will likely pass on the first gen.
