Oh so now periscope zooms are cool? What's next? 120hz screens????

Honestly I'd like to see Apple use MEMS technology utilizing oil and an electrical current to bring in optical zoom range. that is IF it can give use better quality 50x/100x Zoom that we've seen on Galazy etc devices.

this is back as far as 2012 so I'm hoping better advancements for improvements have been made since then.
This would/could allow the sleek thinness we're seeing in the iphone 12 and future devices.

Wouldn't be surprised if Apple pulled that off
You meant Samsung and LG to pull it off.

Just a slap to those who commented “Samsung cr*p”, “Apple copycat” and “can’t innovate if Apple doesn’t”, in the previous post. The reality is that they ALL follow market trends and basically “implement” or copy each other in many ways.

Periscope cameras in smartphones have been used at least by Huawei, Samsung, Oppo, Nokia and Xiaomi so far, but Apple will find a cheesy name to call it like “Magic zoom” followed by “best ever” and call it a triumph.

Don’t go sharing these rumors and making me second-guess my tentative 12PM purchase (which I desperately need on account of a green-striped XS Max) 😂

(I live in the middle of nowhere. Lots of fun little creatures and bits of nature to capture, and every improvement on optical zoom is a great upgrade for me.)

If you really enjoy nature photography then spend the money on a real camera if you possibly can. These phone cameras are absolutely fantastic - *for what they are* - but they really are no true substitute for a good DSLR, and prices on those aren't bad at all anymore.

For one thing, a smaller number of 'good pixels' is better than a larger number of 'crappy pixels' by a long shot. And that's just one advantage. Phones have to do a LOT of pixel-massaging software trickery to get the results they get, so while they are great for a lot of things, if you want full control that may be a reason for getting a real camera. Here are a few shots from my truly ancient Minolta 5.1MP DSLR (and it wasn't even an especially high-end; no full-size sensor or even interchangeable lenses, but it did produce nice results):

This won’t launch until 2022 so you can still get two solid years out of your new 12 Pro Max and then upgrade it to the 13 (if next year is 12S) or 14 (if they just go right to 13 next year).

2022 10x zoom? you must be kidding........... Apple, what’s going on, guys? Are u still the most innovative company in the world or?

My iPhone 12 is clearly my best phone ever, but clearly the zoom is one area where they have to catch up.

10X will be OK for most people, but I've seen competitors do better.

Nobody currently can do better than 10x optical zoom. You are thinking of digital zoom

I must say the iPhone 12 Max Pro still misses a lot of features of the S20Ultra. Especially when shooting night photography or having a better OLED screen. I use both and see pros/cons on both sides.

Pretty amazing stuff. There *still* isn't any true substitute for sensor size (ultimately you have to have the light, so at least in theory, a purpose-built camera will always be potentially better), but it's crazy that the cameras in our phones are now so good that they are suited to task for all but the most demanding of purposes. A good optical zoom will fill in one big remaining gap.
In theory, couldn't they take say, a medium format (or just a full frame 35mm) sensor, and shrink down / scale the individual "pixels"/"grain"? Or are we already at smallest size with those?

Why won't apple do it?

  1. It'll make waterproofing more difficult.
  2. It's one more thing that can break.
  3. It'll make assembly more difficult
  4. There's not a lot of user benefit to ultra-zoom.
We'll see.

People have real cameras. It's called their phone. You mean "dedicated camera." Dedicated cameras are only used by 1% of the population now and many of them use a phone as well.

You must be confused with optical and digital zoom. Currently only P50 pro can do 10x optical zoom
the fact that they are thinking of introducing it in 2022 is a bit strange ... but anyway, here you obviously can't express yourself and be understood correctly, bye

How about FIX THE CURRENT phones first!!!??? iPhone 12 Pro on att and it refuses to connect to cellular network. Once connected its fine but that first connection takes upwards of 20-30 minutes. In NYC with subways and high rises it means phone is basically useless. This problem seems to be widespread to AT&T and Verizon and others. They blame network, AT&T blames apple. Seems a patch was supposed to fix but no joy. Crazy

Sounds like "pulling it off" is mostly buying it from a supplier ;)

well it isn't so simple...

1. the quality can't be worse than the current 2x zoom lens
2. it has to fit in the design of the iPhone 14 Pro with whatever Apple has planned for it
3. they have to be certain a supplier exists to provide it in enough units to supply the iPhone, something no other cellphone manufacture in the world has to deal with
