How do I stay online on AIM and be able to get messages?

it says that I'm still online, but I can't receive message notifications

I don't think AIM supports push notifications, so you won't get a badge next to it saying you have IM's. I am not sure though, but Beejive supports this.

Run App Store Apps in Background (Jailbreak Required)

A new tool called iPhone Backgrounder is now available for jailbroken phones which allows you to run official App Store apps in the background. The timely release comes just as Apple's missed the September deadline for background push notifications.
Backgrounder is a Mobile Substrate-based extension to Apple's SpringBoard application launcher that allows applications to run in the background (applications are normally terminated upon suspension).
To enable backgrounding for the app you are currently running, you simply press and hold the home button until a message pops up telling you that "Backgrounding Enabled".

Users can also set up an XML file that will enable backgrounding on specific applications by default. Detailed instructions are provided. Users must have a jailbroken iPhone to take advantage of this application.

Apple has restricted the use of background applications due to concerns about memory and battery life, so your experience could vary.

Argggg, so many parts of me never want to ever jailbreak... then I think about how nice video recording would be and now this. Gah!

Hmm..doesn't seem to work using the first method. I don't really want to have to ssh in right now and create the xml file.

I jailbroke my phone at 1.1.4 and it honestly wasn't worth it.
This by itself would be worth it...

This would defiantly cause the phone to slow down though...

Cool. I just jailbroke a few days ago, but I've been having so many issues with my phone now. Horribly slow, and just other weird things. I'm thinking about restoring =/

Works great and as expected with both Pandora and Simplify Media. This and Quick Gold are now my favorite and primary reasons for jailbreaking.

Update - Simplify Media does not play nicely with Backgrounder. I'm sure it has to do with how they are exiting the program when home is clicked. I will send them an email and see if they would like to look into it.

Update 2 - On another attempt it works fine. Hmm

I just installed this and it works great. I just wanted it for BeeJive and it might be nice for RunKeeper. My only complaint is that BeeJive ALWAYS shows a badge notification. Even if you have no IMs, it will display a "0." Certainly no deal breaker and I wouldn't be surprised if they updated it soon to correct the issue.

As for weather or not jailbreaking is worth it... I couldn't live without WinterBoard! That is the single most important reason I HAVE to jailbreak. The iPhone's default home screen is ugly... plus, I also love my 5 icon dock and Categories.app. If you're like most iPhone users, you have 100,000 apps and can't stand having so many home screens. Categories lets you create folders with your choice of icons to represent each folder. Right now, I have a folder for "Games" and "Applications." What was once 5 home screens is now 2 (one screen has most stock apps... another reason to jailbreak: Poof.app hides stock apps you never use, and the other has my bookmarks)

This works nicely with Last.fm. The fact that you hold the home button for a couple of seconds to enable/disable this makes it so much easier to use.

The looks so nice, but I just can't bring myself to jailbreak ='[ maybe when the new iPhone is on the verge of coming out and I'm almost done with this one

But to sum it up, you enter the name of a band/group that you like and Pandora will create a "station" that caters to your taste in music finding similar artists from the same genre and streams the music to your iPhone/iPod Touch (inclusing album art). So, when you choose an artist, Pandora will play music that others interested in the same artist, listen to. For example, if I were to type in "The Chariot," not only would Pandora play The Chariot, but it would also play "Norma Jean" as they are similar and most The Chariot fans also listen to Norma Jean.

It's a great way to discover new music.

When I search cydia for backgrounder I get nothing. I also have no filters set up. I've never had a problem finding apps before. What am I doing wrong?

edit: found it after switching to edge
