I was going to post a very similar questions. I am very new to running and would like to start easy without hurting myself and eventually prepare for 5K run. I am looking for an app that can monitor my running pace and is able to let me know to either speed up or slow down based on my desired target pace for the run. Do apps like that exist? Thanks

Everything you've asked is already answered in this thread. It's two pages so I think it's manageable to read, isn't it?

Take look at runmeter - you can set audio updates to let you know if you are behind or ahead of route average times and customize screens on the watch for heart rate / distance / pace / etc

I second Runmeter - I love it so much I posted about it the other day. The customisation options are fantastic, so you can have a main page showing the info you choose, and colour things the way you like. So I have time, distance and calories in white, steps in green, and heart rate in red. The time stops if you stop and a smaller timer keeps track of your stopped time independently of the walking / running time.

You can have a screens showing your pace info, so time / % of your walk / run in customisable pace intervals, and the same with heart rate zones. And also screens showing current / average and max heart rate and current / average and fastest pace.

I'm not sure if it does without the phone - I've always had my phone with me so far as I'm mainly using it for walking.

Does Runmeter give you audio announcements when running with watch and not phone?

Runmeter requires you to run with your phone. It doesn't work as a watch-only app. I have never understood why the developer seems to refuse to code a watch-only version.

If you want an app that you can use without carrying your phone, try iSmoothRun or Strava. The current beta of iSmoothRun is excellent and has audio announcements when running with the watch only. Same is true of Strava, but the announcements on Strava are not as configurable and very basic.

This sums up what I hate about this stuff - plenty of apps do a different 80% of what you would like, but its surprisingly hard to find one that does 100%. As it is, I think I'll use Runmeter for my long walks, but use the Nike or more likely Strava for the running or the gym, as it would obviously be preferably not to have the phone for those.

I do like that Runmeter exports out to Strava at the end of a session though, without having to use something like RunGap though. Good as the Runmeter app is on the watch, the phone app doesn't have anywhere near as much polish as Strava.

Having trying all of them for last year current favourite is iSmoothRun - using the beta version with watch only runs having audio feedback is great.
[doublepost=1522399211][/doublepost]It also exports directly to Runkeeper and Strava without the need of RunGap
