I am in a similar search for an answer. Except, I already have DropBox. I also have Picasa, and SmugMug (Pro account with unlimited storage).
DropBox - Awesome...I even have 30gb of storage. The problem is that it syncs everywhere I use DropBox which is 9 different computers. Not a problem on 6 of those, but one is a MacBook Air, with 128gb. I am already struggling to keep it not out of space. I already use selective sync on the MacBook air, and could turn off that folder. BTW, DropBox is awesome. Somebody mentioned a challenge with Could Services. DroBox keeps a local version on your computer and syncs instantly with online version. If other computers are online, like at work, and you make a change at home or on a laptop, then every computer online gets that change immediately. If they are off line, as soon as the come online, the change is synced. I have found only two problems with DropBox. One, if the file is open on another computer. Two, I haven't logged into a computer in a while, like a laptop, or an infrequently used computer. For example, I have 5 computers at work that I log into. Three of them are full syncs. One doesn't get logged into very often, so, when I do, it takes a while to sync potentially hundreds of changes. Same deal here at home. I have computer I only use once or twice a month, as well as laptop, same deal. I have to pretty much let it run for maybe a half our to sync them. Not a problem as long as I have time for that. If not, I have had to stop the sync so it doesn't bog down the computer and/or internet. But, hands down, 20+ years of computer mayhem in keeping up with where the current versions of files has been solved thanks to dropbox. Unfortunately, even it is not enough space for all of my photos.
SmugMug - paying a bundle for a Pro account already. This is my first though...and just posted a thread asking how to get my entire collection from iPhone Albums to SmugMug the easiest. I can't seem to figure out how to get their Camera Awesome App to do it easily...only photos taken in the app, or added to the app. So, for this to work, I need to find another solution. I recall SmugShot, but can't find it in the App store any more. I pretty much have to keep paying the Pro account for this because I do an occasional event. Definitely not enough to really justify the account. In fact, I really need to spend some time with this trying to put some of my best pictures online for purchase.
PicasaWeb - great option. I actually use PW extensively for selected favs. (https://picasaweb.google.com/110942387986527021652) They do not count small files against your quota when shared from Picasa, but not sure about from iPhone. But, the problem is I want the FULL res file backedup so I can delete it off the iPhone.
Pogo - Not sure how this would help, but I have one, with two external drives (1tb and 1.5tb). The two drives serve two purposes. I usually unmount them from the Pogo, plug them into the desktop and manually back up my DSLR pictures to these drives, and then reattach to the POGO. Not sure if the POGO attached drives could be used.
NAS - I have a 1TB WD MBW - but it stays off most of the time and only turn it on to backup.
Website - I also have a hosted website I pay a bit for unlimited storage and unlimited Bandwidth. Not sure how this helps. In fact, I am sure I am not using my own website for nearly the potential I should. I host a few subdomains, mainly for myself and for a school website I backup for my class. But surely this can be used for a lot more. http://www.drewloker.com/
I do my iPhone backup on a normal desktop, but I only do that say about once a month, and it is a computer that doesn't get used very often and is about to die. Drives are fine, but something is wrong with the MB...and I do not think I will be replacing it. But, when I do a iTunes Backup, I also copy all of the images from the iPhone to a one of the backup drives. Then back that drive up at a work 2TB NAS with a Raid 5. So, pictures from all devices end up in three places ultimately...internal drive at home, portable drive and NAS drive at work.
Anybody else in this situation? I mainly want my pictures to be accessible online and redundantly backed up. I already back up ALL photos to multiple locations. I take LOTS of iPhone pictures and video (have two iPhones...older 4 for just video and timelapse) and I take lots of DSLR photos and video. So, I guess, after writing this, the main thing I want to do is to have the photos I have ALL on-line...either via SmugMug of my personal website.
Any feedback...other than get a life! ;-)
