Yeah, so does this mean that Telegram is actually secure if Russia is threatening to ban it? I guess we'll never know if it is closed sourced - I think for a while Telegram had a $ bounty if anyone could crack their encryption.
Big reason why I went to Telegram is because it is one of the few messengers that still has a desktop app. Google Allo - mobile only.... REALLY?!
Would be nice not to have to switch messengers every few years. Used ICQ, AIM, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, Hangouts, and now Telegram.
Requirements for a messenger? 1. Has to be cross platform and cross PC/Mobile. I want to use it on my phone when I'm out and about and I want to use it on my Windows PC when I'm at work.
Wishlist for a Messenger? 2. Doesn't mine the $*!@ out of my data. 3. A reputable company so it sticks around for more than a few years. 4. Easy search for past chats (all saved). 5. Handles photos / videos well.
I'm tired of messengers. I use Discord for college, Hangouts for Ingress / old coworkers, Facebook Messenger for some family and classmates, WhatsApp for older friends (South America mostly), iMessage for a few Apple only buddies, Snapchat for younger family members, Group.Me for my wife's UC college friends, and Telegram for my work and family.
I secretly hoped when Pidgin came out that it would end the messenger wars and we could all use one messenger for everything. Sadly, that died in the early 2000s.
