I agree. The stainless/ceramic/titanium I’ll offer one major factor over the aluminum, and that is the Sapphire display. I really think Apple should advocate more about that, because I think a lot of consumers don’t even know what sapphire is and it might be more for ‘selling point’ for someone to spend the extra money, especially given the Ion-X glass on the aluminum is junk.

Sapphire glass has a much more expensive manufacturing process and I doubt they would add it to the aluminium and absorb the additional cost. If the Apple Watch was not available for £399 then a lot of people, myself included wouldn’t give it a second look. I’d go back to a traditional watch. The glass currently is not as scratch prone as many like to suggest and I’m happy with it.

Apple uses an impure watered down version of sapphire so they can't use that as a selling point. While Apple "sapphire" is indeed harder than Ion-X glass it scratches at 6-7 Mohs whereas real sapphire used by most watchmakers would scratch at 8-9 Mohs.

That's what their marketing team wants you to believe, sapphire glass is not that expensive to produce. You can even get a quartz watch with a similar type of sapphire as Apple uses for $50-60 on a market stall.

If there was an option for an "ultra black" ceramic model (designed to blend seamlessly with the dark edges of the display) I'd be really tempted. But for now the black titanium is good enough for me.

I have no idea what Apples marketing department say, I just know from experience of the processes involved do cost significantly more. The quantities Apple order though should bring it down much like watch makers who currently put it into cheaper watches.

I agree that ceramic doesn’t play well at all with metals. It just looks almost tacky. I think the black lugs if SS could be acceptable but the ceramic I feel just does well with full bright colours. I also feel Nike bands with the holes are just meh to me.. maybe it triggers trypophobia in me haha..

this is by far my most favourite look of ceramic and especially after discovering that watch face hahahha!

white on white on white~

The Nike sport bands remind me of the surinam toad that gives birth to tadpoles from holes in its back. I won’t post pictures here because it’s gross but anyone who’s watched animal planet/discovery channel knows what I’m talking about.

Trypophobia aside, I still own a few Nike sport bands that I like to wear for hot days when I don’t feel like wearing the sport loop.

For those sorts of people I definitely recommend paying at least £700 for an AW with a more scratch resistant screen.

Like an Ion-X equipped iPhone can pick up micro scratches just putting in/taking out of your pocket, an Ion-X equipped Watch can pick up micro scratches (that can only be seen in very bright light) just wiping it with your t-shirt, apparently.

I live with it, because for me personally, I don't want to pay for premium materials for a watch I'm only going to use for a year or two.

I’ve had 3 years with a standard AW and not had an issue with the screen scratching with any severity. A few light scratches that can be seen in certain lights has not bothered me. My Series 2 is now redundant in a drawer and having it pristine was not one of my demands personally.

I only buy SS because of the screen. Apple marketing is in full effect with ION-X glass because these screens scratch much easier than sapphire and similar to the iPhone (which is why I use a screen protector on the phone).

I realize the Apple Watch is not a timepiece per say, but $600 for a Watch in 2019 (even for a 2-3 year useful life) isn't that bad of a deal especially when you factor in all the things that it does.

Good news is Apple provides options so we can each chose what is important to us.

Good pic, but I don't like the combination, but the black lugs are potentially do able while the stainless look pretty bad (IMHO).

I actually broke down and ordered the Hermes Noir simply due to the Watch face, but sent it back yesterday. I did not like the SBSS or the black band. Love Hermes leather though. Thanks for sharing the pic!

Indeed, those buying SS or this are buying it based on looks as lets face it the watch does the same things as the aluminium....

Yes, the look of the watch was a major decision in me purchasing my Space Black Stainless Steel Series 4 - the DLC coating makes me think this is what a Space Black Ceramic watch could look like and I like how the glass and case blend into each other rather seamlessly. And looks were a major reason I went Stainless Steel on my Series 0.

That being said, the scratch-resistance of both the sapphire faces and the stainless steel (especially with the DLC coating) have played a major role, as well. My Series 0 went three years looking as good at Day 1000 as it did Day 1 and I fully expect to get at least three years from my SB SS S4, as well, with it looking just as sharp when it comes time to replace it with a Series 7/8.

Really wish someone made a true, matching white-lugged ceramic bracelet for the AW S5 Ceramic...but this is ok

Lemon Cream is slighty darker than Mellow Yellow but both are appreciably lighter than the other yellow tones Apple has released (Yellow, Pollen, Canary, Lemonade and Flash)

Loving your photos, really makes me want to get a ceramic next time. I love the yellow bands and have the lemon cream, yellow, and lemonade.

I know you said lemon cream is slightly darker than mellow yellow. Is it a noticeable difference? Just trying to decide whether to bother tracking down the hard to find mellow yellow or not. You don’t have comparison pics of them two by any chance?
