A simple choice for some - buy the disc and ideally it should allow for a code to get a digital copy via MoviesAnywhere or something similar. The drawbacks are two - cost (often discs cost more) and if you buy a 4k UHD movie, the digital copy might not be 4k UHD but 1080p (blueray). For me, I rather have the disc, get the digital copy from it and be done. There are times however, streaming services have major discounts and I might grab a couple of movies knowing they may disappear from their catalogue down the line.
Digital codes is only existing in US, Canada and Australia. The rest of the world doesn’t have digital codes.

I don't want physical DVD's or Blu-Rays taking up space in my house. I know many love it, but I just don't. So I want it digitally. Sadly in Denmark, it's illegal to rip your own purchased movies, as you need to bypass encryption, which is a no-go. If it weren't, I would purchase physical, rip them, and then store the physical media in boxes.

So the only choice I have, is to purchase digitally.
how would anyone ever know?

Seen it a lot in Apple Music. I've purchased many albums that are no longer for sale. But I download everything onto an external. Sometimes I create an additional copy on a different external. And everything is backed up onto a third TimeMachine Drive.
Yep. My 90's gangsta rap from Death Row records (not all of it, but quite a bit) has been removed. Had to resort to eBay for CD's and then I broke out the old CD/DVD stand alone unit to rip them, just like '02.

I recall from long ago, it was technically possible to make a full copy of a DVD to disk "as is" without decrypting of any sort. Certain software would mount the copy as if it were a disc (drive) and proceed to play and decrypt on the fly akin to a real disc. My guess is that it might still be possible with a bit of effort with MakeMKV and VLC. I shouldbe honest that I don't recall if this was done with Windows or OSX. SlyFox (now RedFox??) along with MakeMKV forums would be a good place to start. The point is that you are not decrypting the disc and storing on a hard drive. You are copying an encrypted/drm disc 'as is.'

This is what I have always done and assumed that would cover me. However, last night I found that my downloaded iTunes movies will no longer play in the Computers app on my AppleTV, presumably due to an auto-update to the newest TVOS (didn't do any troubleshooting yet).

I can still stream these movies in the Apple TV app, but cannot play the downloaded version, I get an error to the effect "this movie cannot be played on this device". Really hope this is some kind of bug and not a deliberate attempt to prevent us from watching our downloads on the Apple TV. The movies that I ripped from DVD's myself still work, it's only the Apple purchases that won't play.

See this thread:

That's why I take the third choice. Physical media. It's not ideal, but as long as DRM is used, it's the best choice for me.

Just to add to the above, if you're worried about quality and file size, a decent 1080p movie is about 4GB, and a decent UHD movie is about 18GB. So although size is a consideration, you can still store many hundreds/thousands on an external HD, and there's not that many movies I want to watch more than once.
in the end they are just movies, not "My precious" as some make them out to be.

I have 500+ movies bought on iTunes, and this has never happened before. But now it did.

The movie (Stand-up show) "Tom Wilson: Bigger Than You" has been removed.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/tom-wilson-bigger-than-you/id1551101668

I could maybe understand a movie no longer being able for purchase, but why remove from peoples purchased movie library.

I have heard of this before, but never experienced it myself, as many reasons for people losing movies are often caused by:

1. Hidden the movie by mistake
2. Moved Apple ID to another country, where movies isn't available
3. Didn't really purchase the movie on iTunes, but Vudu or moviesanywere linked to iTunes.

But in my case, the movie was bought on the Danish iTunes Store, but it's gone from every country store on iTunes.

Sad sad sad..
Most of the time I can’t find a movie on iTunes library I find it on my Vudu app because that’s where o bought it and it didn’t transfer. I do feel like I’ve lost a movie or two in the past. I’ve started buying discs again, specially because the sound is so much better than on digital, so if it’s a movie I love, I buy disc. If it’s just to have, I wait for a sale and pick up the digital version.

Hi,
I have always advocated local storage to family - looks like from the comments here I might be right.
I have two NAS units, one. a backup of the other - although the backup is only turned on to sync to it, not from it.

One question though - Presuming all the movies etc are subject to Apple's DRM encryption, and you store them locally, what happens if Apple are told by the rights owner to remove the item from their lists?

Presumably when running a movie it checks the DRM assignment from Apple?

If I can I buy the disc or even VHS tape (I go thrifting a lot, tapes are super cheap, like 10 cents and a DVD at a thrift store is $1.50) because I've had enough times where whatever I 'stream' from just up and cuts out because it hates my router or internet somehow. The amount of times my ATV has just up and stopped mid-movie saying 'video unavailable' is just too often.

There's a level of confidence in knowing you can actually finish a physical copy of a movie. No odd video quality shifts, no buffering, no internet even needed. And, it can't be taken away from any 'cloud' over a dispute of any type. 99% of the 'digital' movies/shows I have are also on disc/tape.

I also get to enjoy un-retconned Star Wars trilogy (I have the really old VHS boxed set). Complete with NONE of that remastered CG garbage and no modified ending song from Return of the Jedi.

Oh, and all 3K+ of my songs are stored locally as MP3s (non-DRM) on my Galaxy SII. People look at me like I got two heads but they're the ones who have to listen to ads on Pandora and live with it cutting out when they lose signal. I pity them, really. Those..futurists, living with their oversized phone can't finish a song without it buffering. Newer ain't always better!

Yes, when you search on Cheap Charts, Justwatch, even on Comedy Dynamics (which is the copyright owner) it shows as available on the iTunes Store. That's unfortunately caused by lack of updating through their API's.

If you search for the movie manually in the store, you'll see that it is no longer existing.

EDIT: Well, lucky me, it seems to be only on the Danish iTunes Store it has been removed. And that's even though ex. Cheap Charts, showing it as availible, but when clicking on it, you'll get this error (translated to, no longer available).

Easy just install a VPN and buy it from so other country! Better yet stay out of the draconian EU countries!

Yeah i was wondering the same thing about the DRM. Does that become null and void if apple lose the rights?

the recent comments from Nolan and del toro are very accurate. The only way to have true ownership of media is to buy physical discs! But sadly I think its too little to late for that now.

The movies play back offline, so no, it doesn't check the DRM with Apple. You wouldn't be able to transfer it to a different machine though.

I have so little Apple purchase in the movie/tv department and prefer other sources that tend to not be so problematic. Vudu/Fandango/MoviesAnywhere/Amazon etc. I also have a fair amount of discs that I have “archived” to drive and they are the largest part of my library. When I go to Apple’s app, it doesn’t show all the movies I bought (disc) that had a digital copy. Vudu shows them all, Amazon misses a few etc.

I will continue to buy discs as long as they are available. Best Buy is phasing them out entirely where their storefronts are and someone told me Walmart’s selection is shrinking as well. Shame.

I still have yet to see definitive proof from anyone that losing iTunes purchases is actually something that can happen.

Usually it’s because the person has accidentally hidden it from their account, or redeemed the content from elsewhere ie movies anywhere etc.

Even this topic, OP said the movie had been removed by the studio in error and is now available again.

I can say, from my experience after having a look through my account this week, in my collection of around 20 tv shows and 250 odd movies, I have never lost anything.

Im coming from the UK store. A few examples of things that are no longer on iTunes, chicken run is no longer available, but I can still stream it from my account. Same goes for season 1-4 of the BBC drama Being Human, only season 4 is on iTunes and I can still stream the rest from my account.

Finally the Ricky Gervais show, completely gone, but I can still access from my account.

So for now, I’m inclined to believe I can continue to build my collection with no worries of losing stuff, until I see definitive proof otherwise.

Although it’s never happened to me so far it is something that can happen.
It currently is something that’s happening for those who’ve bought from PlayStation.

I get that, but this isn’t iTunes, and it’s for a fairly niche content store which likely doesn’t work the same as iTunes does

I still have yet to see definitive proof that this happens on iTunes. As far as I’m concerned, Apple stores the copy of the movie you’ve bought in your account which isn’t affected by the film being removed for iTunes.

As an example, look up chicken run. No longer exists on the store, but it still shows in my account

Yes I’ve got plenty of titles myself that are no longer available in the store, but the point is although it’s rare it can happen.
It’s very clearly pointed out in apples T’s & C’s.

Right ok, so they haven’t been deleted from your account, that’s what we’re talking about here

This title (the one, that started the thread) was removed both from store and my personal purchased library. I have some movies that aren't in the store anymore, but luckily still in my library. Items disappearing from my library was a first for me. I contacted Comedy Dynamics "The Publisher" and they didn't now it was gone from the store. Within hours they had it back to the store and my library. So as of now, all my purchased items back from 2011 is still accounted for.

The use of words like "buy" and "purchased" in the context of modern app and media stores is a blatant lie. Just ask Sony customers.
You "bought" or "purchased" the privilege of watching a rental, at least for a while. That stinks...

I notice some movies like Liam Neeson Unknown is on Google but not iTunes now. I have a few on Google sadly they removed the app from Samsung TVs but rentals are cheaper. Surely it would make sense to get everything streaming otherwise people still need DVD? Jaws is 50 years old but people still watch it. I switched most of my collection over to iTunes at cost or atleast £1000 pounds or more. Most DVDs are worthless so I kept 95% of them. I buy most new films digital. DVDs are now 3 months behind digital in some cases.
