Apple released macOS Sierra today with Safari 10 preinstalled, but Mac users still running the latest versions of OS X El Capitan or OS X Yosemite can now download the all-new version of the web browser too from the Mac App Store.

Safari 10 for OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan does not include all of the new features available in macOS Sierra, like Apple Pay on the web and picture-in-picture support for videos, but the update includes the following new functions:

[*]Safari Extensions such as 1Password, Save to Pocket, and DuckDuckGo
[*]New Bookmarks sidebar, including double-click to focus in on a folder
[*]Redesigned Bookmarks and History views
[*]Site-specific zoom: Safari remembers and re-applies your zoom level to websites
[*]Improved AutoFill from Contacts card
[*]Reader improvements, including in-line sub-headlines, bylines, and publish dates
[*]Legacy plug-ins are turned off by default in favor of HTML5 versions of websites
[*]Allow reopening of recently closed tabs through the History menu, holding the "+" button in the tab bar, and using Shift-Command-T
[*]When a link opens in a new tab, it is now possible to hit the back button or swipe to close it and go back to the original tab
[*]Improved ranking of Frequently Visited Sites
[*]Web Inspector Timelines Tab
[*]Debugging using Web Inspector

Safari 10 also includes a number of security updates, including fixes for six WebKit vulnerabilities and issues related to Reader and Tabs.

Does anybody know why my safari feels a lot more sluggish than chrome? (using it on a imac). Inputting text and selecting links seemed to be really laggy. Could enabling adblocker and safari content blocker be the cause?

One small but cool thing I found earlier is if a link opens in a new tab you can now swipe back on the trackpad (or click the back button) and Safari will close the tab and go back to the previous page (I assume that's new anyway!)

Where & how to swipe?

Non starter for me. Cloud based software I use at work seems to see version 10 as an incompatible version and thus renders content wrong. Gonna have to switch to Chrome.

favicons looks ugly and distracting from the content.

Interesting to find someone who uses a browser because it looks uniform opposed to any functionality of navigation reasons. If I were to never browse and just open one tab to look and the beautiful greyness, I'd agree with you. Unfortunately, I like to navigate between a multitude of tabs quickly as possible with icons to distinguish what tab is what.

Can someone release something on the safari extension site? Is contribute to any project to code this

No bird view on other browsers.

Safari is Safari, Chrome is Chrome, they are different, and favicons looks ugly and distracting from the content.

"Bird view" meaning Show All Tabs view?

I can see someone being used to favicons and wanting them, ugly or not. But for my use, tons of tabs would all have the same favicon, not helping me much. And they would lose space for what makes all those tabs different: the titles.

(And of course in menus and sidebar, Safari does have favicons.)

So where's the link. Just want upgrade for El Capitan. Don't see in App store. Not ready for Sierra yet.

Sorry - realised my reply might sound rather rude. Under the list of all items for "Software Update" (the first item in your list), I believe it shows Safari 10.0 and Safari Technology Preview. If you click on the MORE link, those elements should be installable individually.

Can anyone (or are there on the Apple site? - I didn't see any.) post screenshots of the new Bookmarks sidebar please? :)
