I have used Safari for 2 years with not problems until 4. After installation, Safari 4 crashed 2 times in 15 minutes on two different sites for me. After the second crash, I downloaded Firefox 3 (now 3.5) and have not had any problems since.

It has crashed a few times for me and displayed no error report at all. It just disappeared, quite strange. I think it was flash on the sites that caused it though. Firefox has been working fine for me for most sites though.

Safari 4.0 bookmarks

I have an MBP intel 10.4.11.

I downloaded Safari 4.0 and I can't open my bookmarks! It engages in the previously described behaviors whenever I highlight 'Show Bookmarks' (either quits completely or ball spins repeatedly and I have to force Safari to quit). This has never happened before. I tried all the Help information on safari, reset it, and repaired permissions. Still no luck. I know the bookmarks are still there. If I highlight 'Add Bookmark', all of my folders pop up. Any suggestions?

I've also noticed that my computer is slower, & when I first start it, it seems to take awhile to load. I guess that's because of all the memory it consumes. There are some features I really like though.

Many crashes for me as well.
4.01 on a new 13,3 MBP.
Most of the times it´s flash that kills it.
The problem is that Finder seems to be affected to by Safari crashing.
For the time beeing I´ll stick to FF 3.5 hoping that an update to ACE Safari Foxdie will be released shortly.

have you tried any of the themes here?

Just to update, I started using WebKit again and so far nothing has crashed. So far this is great but we'll see after using it the rest of the night.

I'm not having any problems at all. In fact, it's fast, smooth and stable, and hasn't crashed once.

Safari has been like for me ever since I started using the Beta a few months ago. I even just recently bought a new Unibody Macbook Pro, and Safari 4 still does it for me. Even Quicktime and Preview are locking up. Very annoying :(

Safari 4.0 and Quick Time videos

I ended up doing an archive install on my MBP Tiger which cleared up Safari 4 problems with bookmarks (was advised by apple).

It won't play Quick Time videos like Safari 3 did. I get a message stating they aren't movies. When I covert them to WMP which takes a little time they are indeed movies. I even talked to apple, & the tech tried to wiggle out of it by stating they came from a PC. I told him it makes no sense that Safari 3 played 100% of QT videos before (from PCs) and Safari 4 plays 0%. He didn't have an answer for that. Does anyone have suggestions for this?

What?

Also, I have a problem with Safari wherein it doesn't allocate itself enough memory, compared to when it used to leak memory like there was no tomorrow.. I've just given up on it completely and I'm just waiting for SL to fix it.

I think it's most likely that Flash is behind this. My brand new 15" uMBP locks up constantly when I use Safari (which is like 24/7). Just head over to Adobe.com and re-install the latest Flash package. I'm going to try that and head back here to report my results.

Have you tried ClickToFlash? When Safari worked for me, I found this helped a lot http://github.com/rentzsch/clicktoflash/tree/master

Nope, but the problem isn't Safari. Or Flash. It's Transmission the bittorent client. I'm downloading 10 Linux distros for a demo at school which amounts to about 25GB. Every time my system locks up, it's Transmission that freezes before everything else. And IT LEAKS MEMORY like hell.

I suggest you don't have more than 5 parallel torrent downloads.

Count me as one for whom the Beta worked fine, but since 4.0.3 (stupidly clicked "Update" on the System Updater without reading what was there) have had problems.

My main problem seems unique to me: the middle click to open a link in a new tab works for some websites but not others, without any real reason. Normal hrefs too, not javascript links even. Bizarre. Just for that, I will go about reinstalling the Beta if I can find it.

Don't have that problem but I'd guess since you did a reinstall you don't have either Perian or Flip4Mac install. Go install them and see if that works.

I switched to my Mom's Dell, which is 5+ years old and cost $300 w/ a 19" display and a photo printer when we bought it. I transfered my 10 Linux torrents onto it and it was fine. My Mom was also able to listen to music, web browse, video-skype with my Dad all at the same time as my torrents no problems.

It's definitely the crap coders of Transmission.

Ever since I switched to Webkit, my browser crashes extremely rarely -- probably no more than any other browser. I haven't tried using just Safari since so I can't comment if one of the updates fixed anything for me.
