i just discovered that Safari 5.0 and Firefox 3.6.3 don't do the same thing when I click on a particular link in Google Finance to download data from a watchlist.

Safari downloads the file as data.csv.xls which makes no sense to me, I mean a csv is a comma-separated-values file, period, end of discussion.

Firefox does download it as data.csv which is what I expected.

(I prefer that flat file, which is what I discovered a long time ago that Firefox would give me from the link that said "download spreadsheet" so I have always used that one, not the one to the right that says "download Microsoft OFX" -- and I did repeat the download to make sure that I had not inadvertently clicked on the ofx link. But I had not done that, and I got the same result: data.csv.xls FAIL

If I then open the data.csv.xls with the Numbers program from iwork09, it shows the thing as one column, naturally enough, with the commas as part of the data. It also helpfully opens a "problem" window and suggests that the document is tab-delimited and says, heh heh, "the data may look different." Well no sh&t, of course it looks different. So I ditched the ".xls" and reopened it as "data.csv" -- ignoring the warning produced by my renaming activity. Then the file of course opened normally with Numbers, paying attention to commas as delimiters.

Why would Safari decide that I would want a flat file "converted" (and improperly at that) into Excel format? Gawd. Please tell me the Safari programmers are not all working on the Windoze side of their Macbook Pro these days. Not everyone who uses Safari, and Numbers, would necessarily want anything converted to Excel formats. Or was this Google making some kind of assumption based on my browser being Safari? I don't know. I don't care. I was not a happy camper. I want my flat file from that link. And I don't feel like making a two-step process out of it using Safari and a renaming workaround.

Anyway I was just experimenting with Safari 5.0 and almost immediately ran into this little issue, so now I'm back to using Firefox. Sigh. That didn't take long! I didn't even get to play with Reader...

That sounds more like a server side issue. I don't think a browser would change the extension of any downloaded file.

Report the error to Google and the issue will likely be fixed.

Safari 5 rocks, my favorite browser. Firefox is a good second, though.
and I am really loving the reader feature :D

I'm surprised I'm still preferring Safari 5 over Chrome... at first it was just because it was new, but I'm starting to sense that something about it just feels right. Chrome is a damn good app too, but Safari feels better integrated.

That said, I'm definitely still missing tabs-on-top and a unified address/search bar. Hoping that extension devs can figure those out.

man this update is pretty whack for me. i thought i was the only one experiencing page loading "hangs". once a link is clicked the blue loading bar seems to get stuck half way. i have to cancel then reload to get to the page. this is on my early 08 mbp and g5 tower. i'm gonna try to reinstall safari to see if there are any improvements.

update: so on my mbp i uninstalled gimmerblocker, add on extensions, and downloaded safari 5 for leopard. installed, restarted, then added all my previous extensions. so far so good. page load much quicker then before, no hangs. gonna try this tomorrow at work for the g5.

I have a 2009 MBP, 2.66GHZ, 4GB RAM, OS X 10.6.3. All software is legal and legit and I have no shareware type apps or plugins.

For me, Safari 5 is much slower, hangs a lot, a few websites (rightmove.com especially) just don't work with it and, worst of all for me, scrolling is really stuttery and choppy.

For example, page one of this thread is horribly stuttery, page 4 is fine. (Update: page 4 of this thread is actually stuttery now, too.)

Can I legitimately go back to Safari 4?

You're talking about free software, man. Why're you stressed about it being "legit" or not?

Haven't tried it, but you could probably delete your Safari.app executable and download the version 4 .app somewhere. Not sure where you'd find it now, though.

It's been great so far, very fast and loving the extensions.

However, it's a bit buggy and crashy. That I can live with, but the worst is that it won't tell me what tab I'm in (Safari 4 was like this too, hoped 5 would fix it) it just colors all of them the same.

Argh. :(

What do you mean? Different colours (well, shades of grey) for me.

Safari 5 is running sucky on mine, no pluggins etc. Slow, crashes, freezes.... Chrome is so much better especially on vid sites. Safari also doesn't reload tabs that were open when it crashed or froze, really fun trying to remember what you had open or doing with multiple tabs.

Can anyone explain me why tabs on the top is such an improvement?

It's a personal preference. It reminds of actual tabs on folders or in books. I just like the look and feel of tabs on top instead of the bottom, and I like the way it was implemented in Safari 4 beta, with dynamically sized tabs.

Apple is starting to accept submissions for their Safari Extensions Gallery.
I'm guessing it will be a crowded place ;)

safari 5 has been beachballng a lot lesser than 4 for me....
BUT...5 has ridiculously long latency times in accessing many websites!!! what's up with that??!!!

I really like many of the features in Safari 5. Like the top sites thing when you open a new tab, and the reader.

I was all about Safari back on my G4 Powerbook, but then I got Firefox, found it faster and more compatible, and stuck with it. When I found out Apple released Safari 5, I figured I'd switch back.

It does seem to be a bit slower than Firefox, but this might just be an illusion. Otherwise, I'm happy thus far (this coming from someone that's used it about an hour).

Upgraded to 5 the night it came out. Feels just as stable as before, no crashes or hangs.

I like how the page-loading status is indicated in the address bar again.

For the guys having stability problems:

- clean cache/history
- avoid plugins (SIMBL, GLIMS, etc)
- avoid extensions (Adblock crashes OFTEN)
- use Flashless or Click2Flash (for Flash crap)

For blocking ads, use GlimmerBlocker (it is a proxy, so it doesn't affect Safari stability).
For extensions, install one, use the browser for a while to make sure it works without crashing before you install another.

Sorry, but Safari 5 for me is nothing but disappointment. I'm finding it difficult to see the improvements mentioned ... in fact I'm experiencing the opposite ... with six machines of various architectures (including dual processor multi-core), Safari 5 is tragically slow!

Anyone having issues with Safari running slow, hanging on load up....etc...

I got this info from another thread and followed the instructions and Safari is running like a charm.

What worked and worked completely is going to system preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS>+ and adding in these two numbers under DNS Servers:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Make sure you click apply afterwards

You may have to restart your computer or router, but maybe not. These numbers should work for everybody

Yes! I've seen this on Apple's support form and this help a lot. I't didn't eliminate the server issue but it reduced it a great deal.
