I still won’t believe it till it’s announced nothing other than the slip up in that video that they have since taken down has convinced me these are around the corner.

Maybe next gen apple TVs will have it built in...?

My strategy for tracking the Apple remote...

What I hope to hear Apple say:

“With AirTags you can find every lost item you own.

And we’ve been putting the ability to track Apple products into our hardware since the first generation of AirPods.

So with iOS 14.4 you are able to find your AirPods and your Apple TV remote, available today.”

Lol I feel like that would just get spun into a PR nightmare “APPLE ADMITS TO TRACKING PEOPLE WITHOUT THEIR KNOWLEDGE FOR YEARS”

Every time I see a find like this, I picture a software engineer getting yelled at :)
I don’t. I imagine them being asked to pleases come up to “Tim’s office”

Walking in to a boardroom room where Tim is sitting by himself silently staring out the window.

I can’t see Tim yelling just being brutal while silently calm haha.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is what’s getting announced today on CBS This Morning or whatever morning show that was referenced yesterday stating that Tim Cook was coming on the show to make a big announcement?!
You think this counts as a big announcement? lol

I’m sure these airtags won’t have replaceable batteries. If they’re rechargeable I sure hope they can keep charges after a year. AirPods are enough pricy disposal tech for me.

I hope this feature does better than that for the AirPods or iPad. I’ve never had any success with Find My - locations seem very inaccurate and I’ve never found my stuff that way.

Lol this argument still? News flash:
There’s plenty of other tiny trackers on the market already. With some of them being actual gps based.

Anyone can already track you by throwing a $50 android phone into your bag/car etc.

I can get some decent GPS 3/4G tracker on eBay for $50.

If someone wants to track you, they haven’t been waiting for Apple to release a product to do it.
Not to mention. I would assume you can only locate devices registered with your personal iCloud account. Unless some rando had access to your account there’s no way they could track you with an unregistered AirTag. This ‘Joosst’ dude must think Apple hadn’t thought of this already.

Exactly. People like blowing this up like it’s the first tracker ever.

@insomniac86 @Bistroengine No, it's not the first tracker ever. But the iPhone wasn't the first smartphone ever, either. This will be bigger in scale and easier to use than anything that came before, so privacy concerns will also be bigger than up until now. Of course GPS trackers already exist, but they're not a big thing. AirTags will be a big thing.

Also, of course you can only locate tags with your personal iCloud account. But that doesn't stop me from putting my tag in my girlfriend's bag. Those kind of things will happen, and those are things people would not have even thought about doing before AirTags existed.

The large scale and ease of use will make it unethical. Is that really such a weird point to make?

While is see your main point, that these will be way more popular, and I still think it’s a moot point.

Will there be some abuse using an AirTag? Sure, but it could have also been done via a million other ways just as easy.

I think you are giving far to much credit for how simple Apple’s version will be to use compared to other products. Other products are two button presses and setup. Tile is literally download app, click add device, Done. The difference with Tile is that they will have a much smaller discovery network, compared to Apple. But again, if the tech changes from Bluetooth to something else, like GPS, then the network isn’t important.

I believe we have seen in the code a solution to your “drop one in your gfs bag problem” Apparently it will report when a tag has been following you that isn’t yours.

Also you could just add your gfs account to your current find my app. If she doesn’t use it, she would probably have no idea that she’s sharing her location with you.
What’s to stop that problem? That has existed for years.
Same thing with Snapchat, Facebook messenger etc . All can be set to permanently share your location.

Apples Family Sharing wants to share everyone’s location too. And more on that....I can also assure you that majority of families still share a single Apple ID to the AppStore purchase (instead of using family sharing). What does this mean? It means that the family members know the account password. This means that at the very least everyone in that family can sign into Find My and see the location of the account owners personal devices.

In regards to the “Find My via Apple ID’s”
Personally my view is that a parent has a right to know the location of their “child”. And a a husband and wife shouldn’t have an issue with sharing their location already, without needing an “AirTag”.

I get it with bf and gfs, but I mean, if you’re gonna be a creepy dude and secretly track your gf via an AirTag, you’re just as likely to do it via another “just as easy” way that’s probably cheaper too.

Maybe you will be right, and all of a sudden every “normal” person will turn into a stalker overnight with the release of AirTags.

But then if everyone’s tracking everyone, there’s nothing to hide. Lol.

IDK, maybe I’m giving humans too much credit.

Thanks for your elaborate answer, I see what you're saying.
I guess I might have given humans a little too little credit.

And this:

would be super smart and solve the problem.

We'll see!
Yeah we shall see.

Btw I was never calling you personally a creepy dude regards regards to the gf tracking. I was just generalising on what a creeper might do. I feel that you understood that, but I thought I’ll just clarify anyway.

I just hope these do support Ultra Wideband and have the ability to view them through the camera via AR.

If they just show up as a dot on the map, it doesn’t really give me much over other solutions.

For me AitTags would be useful to find the keys when they slide down the side of the lounge chair etc.

Let’s not forget deaf people, as most trackers use audio to locate them in a confined space. UWB would allow the deaf to see the device, instead of needing audio beeps.
