OMFG people..... its a BETA!!!!! Damn....

the point of having a beta is so that people can find all these holes and bugs, report back to apple, and then apple fix them. If the final version comes out and its still crappy, then b**** and moan but give me a break. I'm not taking any security complaints seriously until then. Stop making such a big deal over an unfinished product.

I seriously hope you're joking. A few of these were remotely executable, "0-day" flaws. Plus... 8 in one day??? That's getting close to IE 5/6 territory.

IE 5/6 were final versions. Safari is a beta. Beta means "use at your own risk." Why are people carrying on about this when it's clearly labeled as "beta?"

of note: i use Firefox instead of Safari because of full Gmail support and Firefox freezes ALL THE TIME. the cool feature though is it restores your session if you have to force quit.

Oh, so the guy who misrepresented the Airport issue found and reported eight problems within six hours of Safariwin's release. Could some one wake me when he either publicly documents it so it can be verified or some other research finds anything remotely similar?

Playing the "we don't inform the vendor if we think the vendor spins things" for beta software is, uh, what is the word.... spin.

Calling this 8 security vulnerabilities is pretty deceptive though. Most of these are crashers. Finding something that can cause a beta application to crash isn't unexpected. Lets also note the source of these "vulnerabilities" this is the guy who faked hacking a Mac and refuses to give Apple any information on these bugs. This is someone with a grudge trying to smear Apple because Apple exposed his previous scam.

Bugs are exactly what Apple wanted to expose. This is perfect timing. Safari practically is the iPhone OS, exposing as many bugs as possible prior to iPhone launch is positive, and probably something Apple should have done in January.

O. M. F. G.

The iPhone whiners are bad neough, but now we have people slamming software companies for buggy BETA SOFTWARE?!

wtf?

Dictionary.com
beta software

noun
software that has not yet been released but has received an alpha test and still has more bugs than a regular release; "beta software is usually available only to particular users who will test it"

Wikipedia.com
Taken from "Beta Software"
A beta version is the first version released outside the organization or community that develops the software, for the purpose of evaluation or real-world black/grey-box testing. The process of delivering a beta version to the users is called beta release.
...
Beta version software is likely to be useful for internal demonstrations and previews to select customers, but unstable and not yet ready for release.

I mean honestly pepole? Are you all serious? If the beta were perfect, it'd defeat the whole dman purpose of a beta!
You can build a building to be hurricane and earthquake proof "from the ground up", doesn't mean it is either one on day one, two, or 100. Software dev exactly the same.

sweet lets all go find the flaws in an unfinished beta program.

not surprising, at least jobs didnt say it was the next thing in browser security.

Right on.

Though it should be noted that Safari on the iPhone is a different beast entirely than this 2.0 beta.

Back to Mac v.2

After installing Safari 3 on my Mac, I started getting some weird, not-obviously-related problems. Like my replies in iChat taking 10 seconds to send. Like a delay in opening the font menu in Illustrator. Suddenly Freehand is crashing.

Thank goodness for the uninstaller Apple included with the installer. Everything's back to normal, except my favicon cache, which got zapped.

Well, that's why they call it "beta", right?

Well at least they can get all the bugs out of it before the iPhone is released. I believe this is one of the main reasons they released it.

I think their whole solution for building apps for the iPhone through Safari is rubbish. It means you need to be connected to the internet to use the applications! which is fine for a pc or a laptop but a phone ?!? Lighting fast apps over an EDGE network I think not.

I found a bug already running under windows with multiple screens. But I wasn't surprised, instead, I went to menu "Help" > "Report bugs to apple", and told them about it along with my system setup.

It's Beta software, if you use it, expect bugs, and when you find htem, report them like a good kid.

You pepole aren't downloading the beta expecting to use some free piece of software, expecting perfection and never having to actually beta test, are you?

Gr8 ammunition for all those anti-Apple Windows freaks out there.

This will spread like wildfire.

Just like Steve's speed comparisons. I bet a couple of hundred of sites already have tons of examples of Safari being worse and slower than either FF or IE.

Releasing Safari on Windows does put Apple on the spot. Ofcourse, it's only a beta, but it is the first taste of "Apple's teh sux0rs gay browser" on über great Vista.

Wrong thread dude, the iPhone whining thread is one of the other half billion thread here at MacRumors, not this one. This one is about Safari Beta software for Macintosh computers and Windows based PCs.

Who cares who controls which Windows machines?

Come on, you're not seeing the big picture here. They're Windows machines.

I installed Safari on my XP machine, and it crashed within two minutes. It was when I visited the Apple site to watch the new Leopard demos.:)

Security issues or not, I'm using it. I just downloaded the beta an hour ago, and it's amazing. The speed is hard to believe. Every slow site now loads lightning fast. Digg's forums used to bring Safari to its knees (sometimes putting up the spinning beach ball for up to a minute) and now there is no lag whatsoever. The find feature is incredible and the Web inspector (which btw does not appear to be available in the Windows version) is the kind of tool any Web developer would kill for.

I think my days of being a Firefox user have just come to an abrupt halt. If only Apple would incorporate the feature from FF where it clears your passwords, cache and history when you quit, it would be perfect.

It is called private browsing...

EDIT: I do believe you are experiencing the "placebo effect." The time it takes to load a html page from Safari to Firefox is insignificant.

Hmm, not my experience at all

its ususable here in windows. it acts like it has no fonts, all the menus are blank and if ya hit the bug key or do anything with the menus it locks up and crashes...ugh:mad:

Honestly, I've only had 1 problem with the Safari beta - clicking on the taskbar icon doesn't minimize the application and when I bring it back up it doesn't keep it in Maximize mode. I've submitted a few bugs and have yet to experience a single crash. It might have something to do with my company keeping absolutely everything on my computer 100% up to date - I get freakin patches at least 3-4 times a week...

Overall I like the Safari on Windows - the fonts are anti-aliased and look like Clear Type is turned on, looks very clear and appealing to the eye.

I do find myself looking to close windows on the upper left hand corner tho - haha - old habits die hard!

I don't see how going to windows is the problem.

the issues are clearly in the safari program, it has nothing to do with windows.

firefox beta did not have any problems like this.

Once again, the mac community is complacent about security, and we really shouldn't be because that sets us up for a big disappointment when hackers start targeting osx

surprisingly other browsers like fx/opera managed to stay safer.

anyway, welcome to the real world of windows, apple :D good luck stay safe and survive. and lets check back on browser market share in 3 months!

As I said in the other tread regarding Safri, this is not Apple's first foray into producing software for Windows.

and truth to be told, did u find any firefox/opera/IE betao get exploited two hours after release?

I know it wasn't hours, however I believe it was well under a week from the release date that bugs / security holes had been found with IE7.

However I am not the best at using google to find time sensitive evidence to that, perhaps someone else can?

Sorry I don't spend my life on forums so when I make a post I round up my thoughts on the matters at hand. It's all safari related so meh.
