I think its pretty damn lazy on Apple's part to not even have a 'new tab' button. Apple + T is not a good enough substitute in my opinion.

I am still baffled to this day by this omission. What the heck are they thinking over at apple? Who is the idiot over at apple who said no to this, because you know somebody said its needed.

GOOD GRIEF APPLE, PUT A DAMN TAB BUTTON ON THE FREAKIN MENU ALREADY!!!

It's great that someone took the time to provide this utility, but it would be nice if there was a bit more information about the author and the utility.

I'm a bit cautious about installing things that have no information attached to them.

I would feel better if it were on a legitimate site such as version tracker, and had been thoroughly examined.

A little information goes a long way. I guess maybe I'm just a bit old-school

THANK YOU SO FLIPPIN' MUCH!!!! :D

I is a happy camper now!

Strangely, though, I don't remember ever having to hack, I just remember seeing it in the customize window and I thought it was weird I could never find it on any other mac... Hmm...

This is strange, but I was using the windows Safari 3 beta and wanted to add a button to open up a new tab. When I tried I thought I saw a button for a new tab on the "customize toolbar" screen. When I tried to drag it to the toolbar it did not work and disapeared from the "customize toolbar" screen.

Did I dream this up?

Anyone have this happen? I was going to send a bug report to Apple, but I am not 100% sure I didn't dream this up.

I just noticed that if you right click (windows) on the tab bar then a menu option appears that says "new tab." This is a little better, but not quite as good as a button.

the button of

is "add bookmark"

Finally - add tabs to safari

I found "Twicetab" listed on VersionTracker and it does the trick. You don't get a button, you just click twice on the tab bar and violq! - you get a a another tab. It has a 5-star rating and I've been very happy with it.

Installing SafariStand gives you the option of having a new tab button in the toolbar...

FWIW, Stand works flawlessly with Safari 3. It's not really a hack. It complies with the SIMBL architecture. Like any plugin or extension, you have to make sure it's ready before you update to a new version of Safari. But I have not experienced any problems with Stand (or with Inquisitor or Safariblock) on Safari 3.

on safari 3 on my macbook most pages wouldnt open on the first load (I had to hit reload 3 or four times) when I had it installed...

uninstalling it seems to have fixed it!
Depressing because I really liked the sidebar thing! :(

Did you have the specific Safari3 one?

I found a reasonably good way to open new tabs in Safari 3, without downloading any hacks.

Right click on any TAB at the top in Safari and the first option you see is "open new tab."

This won't work unless you already have at least one open tab though. When you have no tabs open, there is no tab to right click on.

Sorry for reviving an old thread.:)

I was playing with Safari 3 and figure a way to use the method in the quote above even when there's no tab opened. Simply goto "View", and choose "Show tab bar". The tab bar will then be visible even if there's only one tab opened. When there are 2 or more tabs opened, the "Hide tab bar" option will be greyed out (obviously), but will be accessible when there's only one tab though.

Yanno what's odd? I use Firefox mostly, and have the "new tab" button on the toolbar, but I NEVER USE IT!!!!

:apple: T for me, for the longest time. I guess my hands are on the keyboard anyways, and :apple: T is ingrained.

Even in Windoze I used CTRL T. I honestly don't see the lack of a "new tab" button as being a big deal-breaker ;)

Same as the :apple: ^ and :apple: \/ to get to the top and bottom of webpages. Sure beats mousing, or scrolling!

Native Solution

Hello all,

This is my first post, I hope this is a friendly community! ;-)

Well, I got Safari to work a "New Tabs" button without any 3rd party patching or plugins. Only tradeoff is that you have to give up the "Autofill" button. I tend to never use it so I chose that. However, if you want any other buttons gone, I can fulfill that too.

What would you guys like? A video tutorial on how to do it yourself? Or the modified Safari app? My Safari is Version 3.0.4 (5523.15)

I hope I can help you guys.

This works flawlessly, and I'm very happy! I sometimes just like to browse one handed with the mouse and the -T is a "ugggh" sometimes.

So I used the "Autofill" icon as the "Add Bookmark" because the pencil looks like its "recording" or "saving" something, such as a bookmark. And I used the "Add Bookmark" icon (The big "+") as the new tab, as it seems logical that you would "add" a new tab.

These are two screenshots:
New Tab (hovered):

Add Bookmark (hovered):

Thanks,
I hope this helps anyone.
Again, either ask for modified app or a video tutorial on how to do it yourself, if you want to do it for some other button, let's say.

I'd like a video tutorial.

That way, perhaps I could redo it myself as needed instead of waiting for an updated modified version every time Apple updates Safari.

Glad to hear you found a way.

Ok, in that case, I will need to reinstall safari for it to return to its normal buttons, so I can record a tutorial. One thing to note: I am not too proficient with video tutorials so when its up, please bear with me. =]

Thanks,

OK, that will be great.

Apple did just release Safari 3.1 today. So, hopefully your method will work with the new version as well.
