when I initiate software update the screen comes up and appears to be checking for new software but progress bar level stays in the same place. I am currently downloading Mac OS X 10.5.7 will try to install that followed by trying to install Safari again, hope it works otherwise I do have bigger problems!

Good Luck and report back your findings

so I downloaded and installed 10.5.7 and sure enough safari opened as normal...many thanks to all who responded I really appreciate your time and effort!

As long as you're downloading Safari, you might also wanna grab Firefox (www.getfirefox.com), to see if it's JUST Safari that's having this problem, or if it's any browser, which would more likely indicate a network issue of some sort.

You can try this... but I won't assume any liability :eek:

Your Home Folder -> Library -> Caches -> com.apple.safari
[delete this folder]

Your Home Folder -> Library -> Safari
[delete this folder]

Restart your computer

Restart Safari

Hi, I saw this message a little late and am glad the issue is resolved. But I think you can also delete this file :

Your Home Folder -> Library -> com.apple.Safari.plist

This com.apple.Safari.plist file stores all the settings of Safari. If it gets corrupted, then the app will startup and get stuck with the color spinning beachball. This trick works for all applications in OSX as well. This file gets created when it is not found, so it is relatively safe to clear this file (you just have to configure your application again.)
