3) CPU% that the clip runs at.
Moving YouTube into the iOS 7 useragent doesn't change CPU activity at all really. But it does definitely offer smoother playback when multi tasking on another monitor. Also, this is the only way to use Soundcloud on a PowerPC Mac now.

My 2 cents.

I've currently reinstalled OS X 10.5.8 because my Homebrew & Macports libraries were a complete mess so I needed a clean install on my Powerbook G4 12" 1.5 Ghz & G4 15" 1.67Ghz.

I've installed Webkit 600 from here https://sourceforge.net/projects/leopard-webkit/
ran all the scripts , meaning install newer SSL certs, link everything to Webkit.

Currently when I enable the Developer Menu on Webkit or Safari , I can switch the UserAgent up to iOS 8.1 .

Can't test the playback and CPU usage yet however since they are both compiling gcc49 for the past 2 days running at 100% CPU so I don't want to abort the compile.

I don't really know why you guys are getting this. Doing this allows my G5 to handle a lot more Webkit windows and tabs as well. Using regular WebKit with more than 3 tabs gets waay to slow for me.

The reason I'm sceptical is because when doing the research for this:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/realplayer-vs-quicktime.1980864/

I tried out at least 20 user agents and did lots of testing - for me iOS7 was/is unsuitable. I'm always trying for new ways to get more out of these old machines so keenly look to others when something new is found and if iOS7 works for you and others that's great.
But for me, across three machines, it simply produces bad results - by that I mean, Youtube stutters where before it didn't and Twitter consumes nearly twice as much CPU.
Maybe it's because I'm comparing to my base system that's already optimised and yours wasn't?

You say iOS7 is the only way to go for Souncloud but I've been running it on standard Webkit for as long as I remember.
And personally, I've never had problems having loads of tabs open in Webkit or playing Youtube on top G4s and G5s.

If anyone is having great success using iOS7, especially on a G4, please give feedback as this will mean there must be something wrong with all my Leopard machines ;)

I could be about to eat my words...I thought I had the latest Webkit as a new version come out in June - this one's even newer - getting it now.

This is confusing, your link is the latest version but its 600.8.10_2 the one I have, which was released in June is 601.7.5?

Is everyone using this installing the full webkit framework? Maybe that's the key - however I'm reluctant to do that as in the past it breaks apps.

It looks like he/she offers only 600.8.10_2 because the newer one has issues ( found on the wiki homepage )

Release Notes
  • 601.7.5:
    • source code up to date with Safari 9.1, but lacking some features
    • built against and shipping with libgcc and libstdc++ from GCC 6.1
    • system root certificates downgraded to the ones from OS X 10.9, as the ones from 10.10 seemed to cause more and more issues
    • installing as system default version is not available because of at least the following known issues:
      • completely untested
      • no 64 bit PowerPC build yet
      • Objective-C garbage collection compatibility is broken
  • 600.8.10:
    • bug and security fixes from Safari 6.2.8 / 7.1.8 / 8.0.8
    • system root certificates updated from OS X 10.10.3, but retaining the Equifax root certificate which has been removed by Apple causing security warnings when connecting to various major web sites

Thanks, that makes sense. I haven't had any issues with 601 so far but as I say, I never do the system wide install - presumably you do and that's why you see user agents up to iOS 8 - I only ever see 4.3.3 max.

Thus to understand correctly :

You are using Webkit 60x , no framework/relink/system-wide install , no UserAgent on your 1.67 Ghz G4 ?

What is the highest Youtube quality you can play without buffering, stuttering ?

Are you using ClicktoPlugin/ClicktoFlash to redirect the video to Quicktime or is it running in the browser ?

HTML5 player chosen in Youtube ?

At moment I'm on my 2.1Ghz G5 iMac - I've just installed Webkit 600.8.10 system wide but it's made no difference to Youtube performance, also I still don't see no higher than iOS4.3.3 user agent in Develop menu. On the plus side, it hasn't broken iTunes and Garageband this time!

Understand that I don't have problems playing Youtube easily on this iMac and 1.67 Powerbook but do if I follow the OPs advice.

My default on Leopard machines is ClickToPlugin (as I like to save files) but running with Flash is quicker if I'm not saving.
With Webkit 60x and the default user agent, iMac plays 480P Flash smoothly, Powerbook 1.67 with same install, 360P - I never use the HTML5 player as I find it's more demanding.

On machines lower than 1.67 (and on Tiger) I use Omniweb with an old Android user agent - navigation and playback are excellent on my 1.33 iBook, detailed in my thread here:

As a baseline I've tested playback on this clip:

On my 2.1 G5 iMac, with Webkit 600 installed system wide, no buffering - playing straight away and CPU measured at the 25 sec mark:

Webkit, default agent: 42% - smooth playback
Webkit, iOS7 agent: 86% - video smaller size, stuttering throughout
Webkit, default with CTP, streaming through Quicktime: 48% - smooth no stuttering

Trying the same after making a Fluid app:

Fluid default 40%
Fluid iOS7 96%
Fluid Android 51%

Weird, my G5 on Webkit without a user agent it says something like "Something went wrong. Are you using an updated browser?" and of course it uses flash for audio playback so the latest TenFourFox can't use it and I haven't been able to get Soundcloud to load correctly on older TFF versions that did support flash.
Also with this talk of WebKit scripts breaking things, I do have a few issues with iTunes. The icon randomly deletes itself in the dock and I get a "You do not have enough access privileges for this operation." error every time I open it. Didn't think it was caused by WebKit but now that I'm thinking of it, it started happening soon after I ran the scripts.
*edit* I should add iTunes does work fine after clicking continue past the error

ClicktoFlash on my PowerBook actually broke Safari and it couldn't load web pages anymore. Weird because it's an exact clone of my G5 that never had issues with it at all when I used it.[/QUOTE]

I can understand how people get frustrated not getting the same results as others with identical setups.
Yesterday, in repsonse to a question here, I confirmed my 1.67 Powerbook plays Youtube 360P Flash perfectly - today, I've just tried it again and it skips throughout - in the intervening 24 hours, it's had no installs, changing of settings, nothing.

I wonder if YouTube has some background scripts running at certain times, perhaps for ads or for the new "Next Video" playing tool.

Maybe, they've introduced some new scripts today and my hosts file needs updating. Having said that no ads were appearing and I always have autoplay etc turned off.
Not a problem really, as most of the time I use ClickToPlugin on Leopard and TFF/Greasemonkey/Viewtube on Tiger.

That seems to be the best method I have found thus far.
