It's not as bad as you would think (Internet always makes it seem more prevalent) but theoretically there will still be defective ones for a few months.

To quote the Marathon Man:

"Is it safe?"

I'll go pick up the drill...

The white iPhone will scuff silver on silver, so apart from close inspection it will, in my opinion, wear better in the long run. The black will scuff and wear silver on black, which will be easily noticeable.

A lot of people haven't noticed any wear on their black phones at all, so it may simply have been a bad batch. Eventually it will wear though, so if you are okay with that, go for the black. It definitely looks cool, I just personally prefer the white.

For what it's worth, I've had my black iPhone 5 since launch. It's been completely naked with the exception of a leather hip holster and its as mint as when I took it out of the box.

It's fine. Mine has been flawless since the day it arrived. You only hear about the bad experiences on the internet- the majority of the phones are perfectly fine.

I've had two black ones and they both had the black wear off horribly, 1 of them I dropped and holy **** it looked really really bad, nothing like the 4s, traded for the white on Craigslist and i couldn't be happier. You guys can keep your crap black ones, good luck selling them in a year

Actually there are reports of people mysteriously dropping dead literally minutes after taking possession of their black iPhone 5. Apparently those who buy whites go on to lead normal, productive lives. It's your life man. :)

Ordered online and picked up a week 38 build 16GB Black AT&T phone last weekend and it was perfect. Yes, it is a well known issue, but I believe it may be blown way out of proportion.

So... if you throw your phone, it gets scratched?

I'll have to remember that...

There seem to be a lot of careless and clumsy people who expect their devices to be indestructible. At least they don't dent like a soda can when you drop them like the first iPhones, or explode into pieces like most plastic phones on the market.

Stop blaming build quality for personal carelessness.

I hear cases are good investments for those who need the added protection. :D

That what cases are for, genius. Also, your feminine white phone will scratch just as easily. Have fun with your light-bleeding white.

Oh no, is this now a color war? Lol

If you don't have OCD then yes. I was at the mich ave store today and literally blew though every 64 gb black AT&T model they had and still ended up taking one that was scratched up out of the box. Ended up settling because I had my kid with me that was at about the end of her ability to sit still. But I will definitely be returning it soon.

I think white and black are pretty gender-neutral. The white will scratch, that's true. But it'll scratch silver on silver. Who cares? It won't be noticeable.

I have seen one example of light bleed online, mine has none, nor do any of the white phones my friends have.

so they basically let you keep opening new ones till you find an unscratched one?

Don't get it. Millions of phones have been returned. The map program is broken. Taking pictures in the sun screws up your phone. Delivery systems are screwed up. Wifi usage is through the roof. The phone will look 4 years old in a week.

Meanwhile... folks are trying every way they can to buy a new phone, usually black.

Yep. and we didn't find an unscratched one. The "Specialist" i spoke to even tried telling me that he had never seen a perfect iPhone... (then pulled his out of his pocket and showed me how his had no scuffs minutes later)

Realistically i would have just been okay with the 2nd one but the fact that he was being pretty unhelpful and overall pretty annoying is what got to me.

I do feel stupid for returning my black 32 which really was perfect and i do regret it, but nice thing is that i have 30 days to think about it.

Pic or it didn't happen right? here ya go...

Currently, I count 8 black iP5s in my family. None of them have had any issues of any sort, with exception of one. This one iP5 has a flash/shutter timing issue, which will be addressed at the Apple store. Six of the iP5s are used without cases since launch day and are in pristine condition.

Damn! no one in your fam. like the white ip5?

It's more exaggerated than it really is. I picked up VZW and AT&T black iPhone 5s and neither had any scuffs. Just go get one!
