Could be. But I'm not an airline pilot, so my pay scale isn't well known. Some of you know what I fly, which is a clue, but many seem to think I'm making a quarter M, which I'm not, I promise. :)

I don't care what others make, but what others fly is interesting (should I start my first thread for that :D)

I'm sure it is much more interesting than what I fly: Piper Warrior PA-28 and Robinson R-22. If my salary were based on these, it would pretty much have to be as a CFI, which would probably not be in Mac-purchasing range.

Any hints.... do you get to fly above FL450 with the hot rods? Do you give your speed in mach numbers? :D

Count your blessings in this economy.

For many years, people considered those completely unqualified only suitable for civil service thus people thinking that GS-9 is "lowly". No GS job is lowly, it means you are employed!

Equal jobs in the private industry have far less stability and don't pay much more these days than civil service. In some areas, the highest paid jobs in certain disciplines are those of government service. Many people in San Jose/SF ditched their temporary government service jobs (feds, state, city) to pursue their fortunes in dot.com. Those who stayed behind felt bad, initially, for not going for it, but today, the ones with jobs are the civil servants.

Believe me, I am very aware of that. I was actually joking about Metatron being a GS12. It's also a running joke around my office, since I am the low man on the pole in an office full of GS11s or above. I've only been on this job about 8 months, so I guess I had good timing. I worked as a government contractor for a few years until the contract got cut way back. Immediately before my current job, I was working for a small computer repair and consulting firm. A couple of months after taking the gov't job, I talked to a former co-worker at the firm, and he told me they had laid off some people in an already small business. (Around 15 or so employees) Again, good timing I suppose.

Ironically, this is the second time I have been in a government job during an economic downturn. After the dotcom bust in 2001, I was working helpdesk for a university, and rode that out at that job.

And salary isn't that bad. It is one good aspect of living in a low cost-of-living state. In more expensive areas, GS pay may not be that great, but around here, it is pretty good. The house I am renting would go for 2-3 times my rent in a place like San Fran.

21k a year. I bought my MacBook when I was still living with my parents though. There's no way I could afford it now, paying rent and all. I'll be sticking with my MacBook for quite a while. If anything happens to it, I'd probably have to pick up some sub $300 netbook to replace it.

20 years old, Industrial Engineering student.

Currently making $27/hr at an engineering internship (equates to about $58,000/year)

That's a pretty huge sum for an internship! Stick with it and work hard, sounds like a good place to be (pay wise anyway).

Interestingly, I was going to post how much I earn, but suddenly I don't want to. It does seem an oddly personal thing, especially considering my usual approach to pay (it doesn't bother me how much people in the same job earn as long as we are both happy with it).

Government employee here (not the feds, local government), so my salary is hardly private... In fact my local newspaper just requested a database of every employee's salary so they can publish their "list of shame" of those of who are apparently gorging ourselves on the public trough

I agree, too personal.

Although interestingly my salary is spent in the following way:

33% - Car running costs
15% - Buying Apple Stuff
2% - My disposable income
50% - Someone else spends

I still am surprised it's such a personal question. Why is it a personal question? Why?

Right now I have no job, so I make about $300 or $400 a month.

I remember this topic coming up in discussion I think in CNN Anderson Cooper with Suze Orman. They where giving out tips to those in bad cases. She mentioned at the end keeping your salary only benefits your employer.

Sometimes I wonder those graphic designers in the Creative forums in MR make more than me by the way they post.

I am open to my pay which is 48kish/year if I don't end up losing my job.

What I hate is people just look at the salary for $$$$ but never consider the whole package as in health benefits, ira, retirement, etc. I rather take a pay cut for a good package deal than high pay. If you know how to budget you can still accomplish a lot of things.

how on earth do you make money with no job??

I occasionally provide Mac tech support for people, through posting ads on craigslist, and I also provide fast typing services.

I don't have a real, steady job, so that's why I said I have no job. I don't really.

ok well that makes sense, i thought you meant the government paid you or something. if thats the case then i would move to US ahahahaha.

nice to see your making some money doing things that are interesting (to me anyway). i could type all day, better then doing what i currently do)

Salary sensitivity aside, maybe you could try looking at this website: Glassdoor.com . You can see what other people at your company are paid with similar levels of experience. I'm a senior systems engineer with a government contractor, so I do OK.

Hey - a Warrior is a cool plane! I've had a lot of fun in those. And an R-22? You have me beat there - I don't do the helicopter thing.

And to answer your questions - yes, and yes. :)

In 2007 $155K,
In 2008 $80K
in 2009 so far: $2K
and if it keeps going in that direction 2010 will be a negative number. ;)

I'm always looking for cheaper better deals on my electronic goodies though! Always! :)

EDIT:
And in reference to Mr. Nash 80% (or as much as I can) of my earnings go into savings. The rest is living, travel, and goodies.

.

I'm a 20 year old college student. I make $12/hour and $9000 a year. I own an 8GB 3G iPhone and Penryn MBP (bought refurbished).

I'm surprised it is such a personal thing. My parents always made finances in our household very transparent and my aunts/uncles/friends have always been open about it. I don't consider it to be personal because you are not what you make, it makes absolutely no difference in regards to what sort of person you are.

I think this thread would have been better served asking:
"How does MacRumors pay for their expensive habit?"

I did the unfun thing and saved until I had cash, then put it on credit and promptly paid off the animals at PC Financial.

Why is the question "How much do you make" so personal? I have never understood that.

I make $12.01 an hour and work full time. So around 19k after taxes. It blows. I need at least $15 right now.
