It is not an Apple issue. It is the person's internet connection speed :p I sure know that ATV would suck big time in australia with their poor speeds and limited downloads.

No, it's not about speed. I've got service through my cable company at 20 Mbps and it's running through a new Airport Extreme.

Configure the Atv on the 5Ghz band and see if it improves. I have no probkems with mine and it's the same gen 2 as yours.

Went to my local AAFES to get one for Christmas. The guy in front of me bought two 50' flat screens and two Apple TVs, taking the last two in stock. :(

AppleTV Love

We're loving our AppleTV. I really hope they put up an App Store for it.

App Idea #1 IMDB
App Idea #2 Weather Channel
App Idea #3 Local News

What else can you ask for?

I can see why, I love it myself. I've been renting some TV shows and movies, its great. I can't wait for it to support apps!

I dunno... maybe, say, a dedicated television channel for weather so we don't have to wait on a magical app from the Weather Channel.

Nice device, works pretty well. My biggest complaint is that it isn't on all my TV's! Also hoping 2011 brings more third party apps and an app store.

what does that have to do with anything? it's 20mbps to the nearest neighborhood switch, not back to iTunes servers

Were there ever any sales numbers on first gen Apple TV sales? I don't remember Apple releasing any numbers. I can't remember if any analysts took a stab at it.

A Hulu Plus App

A UFC App

A MLB App

A Playboy App (not likely!)

That kind of thing.

Just got mine yesterday.

It replaced my old ATV. I don't like the interface as much, and there are no TV show rentals in Canada!

But - I'm really hoping that I can buy apps in the Future, such as NBA apps for games, or the Fox network etc.

Should be good! This thing is waaaaay cooler running that my old ATV!

I don't know why people are complaining about download times. This is only a 12mbps connection but I regularly get twice the speed during regular business hours. Later in the day it's even faster.

At that speed I can get an 800MB movie in 4 mins. An HD movie in 15 minutes, so it's not really that big of a deal. 15 minutes is enough time to use the bathroom, get something to drink, and settle in before the movie starts. It's not that much time.

If people are experiencing slow internet downloads it may just be because of a few simple things that can be easily fixed.

Most new homes have networks pre-installed now, which means that every room is wired for every service you may want. The problem with that is it can seriously effect your download speeds as you've diluted so much bandwidth.

When the Cox guy was installing new service he bypassed the house network so that the first place the cable information went was to the line where the Airport Express would be running from. That way the modem has a direct link to the internet feed.

Signal boosters were also put in to compensate for the size of the network. It's not a huge network but if you want every room pre-wired than it adds up pretty quickly.

If you haven't already, a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is going to make a huge difference in your download speeds. A huge and very noticeable difference, especially if your current modem is an older model.

At this point I've pretty much transitioned to getting non sports and news content from the internet. Or anything that isn't live TV.

The only problem being that most of the ISPs providing internet service are also the same companies providing content for regular television and cable. Which, unfortunately, is likely to keep the price of internet bandwidth higher than it should be for quite some time.

Seriously, if your downloads are slow you should get on your ISP.

Does it has a VPN function? If so just get a VPN server (costs about $9.99) set it up in the Apple TV and make use of all the american App and TV series. This is how i always watch everything on iPad.

Got my parents one for Christmas to go with their new flat screen (yes, they are late adopters). Now if that rumored NFL Sunday Ticket app could arrive by Sunday. By the way, streaming is better on iPhone and iPad than a PC. Probably because PC uses Flash.

Lol I think you hit the spot there

Congrats Apple!

That's awesome. I still wouldn't buy it for couple of reasons:

1) Limited Closed Captioning sections.
2) No Hulu Plus app
3) Limited TV/Movies
4) Then again, still limited closed captioning sections.

:\

I'm getting by fine with a 1st gen AppleTV, I would love to get the new one but i'm waiting to see how the app store pans out. My TV has YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Unbox built-in, so swapping out my 1st gen for a 2nd gen would only result in a loss of features for me at this time, and only add slightly better support for HD (supposedly).

Google TV got off to a rocky start, but hopefully we'll see new devices for it at CES. This would be the best option for me thanks to the HDMI pass through (all my HDMI ports are full).

That kind of thing.

If this gets the MLB app I am in. I am trying to find solutions to get the MLB internet package rather than buy it through cable. At $99 this would be the perfect alternative. If not, Roku has it and I will be picking up a few of them. Hopefully Apple adds the app store by Spring.

Agree. I've been happy with mine. For me, the advantage of being able to watch Netflix on the new ATV has outweighed the disadvantage of not being able to store local content on it. It could be a lot better, though.

Oddly enough, Netflix is my biggest complaint about the thing...

That feature is worthless until Netflix starts bolstering the number of movies available for streaming. Nearly everything I search for is not available.

Why hasn't Apple purchased Netflix outright? What the heck are they saving over 50 billion dollars for?

Any thoughts?

We "upgraded" our first gen AppleTV to the new one. I really like Netflix integration but miss the ability to make purchases. As well, I would rent TV shows if the TV shows I watch were available for rent! Because it doesn't do direct purchase it looks like the library is much smaller than it is when you browse available titles.

For some who think it's a speed or network issue, I assure you that I'm not new to wireless LANs and I know what I'm doing. It's not my network. It's also not my ISP. If it were my ISP, can you explain to me why my gen 1 ATV's still work perfectly, but my gen 2 takes hours to stream anything? It's a bug with the new gen 2's. I've been using Apple TV for a couple years now and never had a problem with the old ones (3 of them). It might not affect everyone, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Benoitgphoto, thanks for advice on the 5 Ghz, I'll check mine and give that a try tonight.
