Fantastic!!

Although I believe the next iPad will have something along the lines of 1280x720, and then iPad 4 will be 1440x900 THEN we'll have a true retina in iPad 3

On a side note, WTF's happened to Macrumors??? it's changed and I hate it :p

Why do u say that. Pretty sure the iPad 2 is doing ok

I really truly don't understand everyone's obsession with such high resolution displays... I have never once looked at my iPad screen and wished it were a higher resolution.... It's perfect. Sure more is always better, but i'd rather have other stuff first

The current iPad 2 is in line with almost all laptops. It's screen is fine. But like you more is better and I'm sure the Retina display will be killer on the iPad 3.

But how much will it cost???

The ipad can't even output 720p video. A bit archaic in the year 2011 if you ask me.

It's worth pointing out that at these tradeshows many companies demonstrate technology that is years before large-scale commercial feasibility.

Screen resolution isn't everything. There are plenty of other factors that Apple will consider before green-lighing a particular spec. For example, what are the power requirements for this prototype display unit?

Good post. Also, how does this resolution affect CPU and RAM performance? I'm no expert, but if it does affect it, Apple will have to do some considerations.

Still, this is very cool. Makes you wonder where laptop LCD makers have been for the last years. Nothing has happened on that front, and we're still stuck with crappy 110 ppi displays or so.

Roll on next march. So glad I held off upgrading to iPad2 now. Didn't see it as a worthwhile upgrade and still don't but and ipad 3 with retina and proper cameras and maybe double memory, that'll be an upgrade worth having

Interesting. Could there be something to those early claims of an iPad 3 in September, after all?

I mean, I doubt it, but if Samsung says this awesome new display technology is ready to come to market, then that means Apple has already had one for 6 - 12 months in the lab.

Unless you have IPad 1 it's not in your interests to ditch the IPad 2 as it's not long out. Only IPad one owners want an early IPad 3 release.

Is one new release a year not enough? iPad 2 is already selling well so surely Apple will hold back and keep to a release schedule of one a year.

Only Samsung would release 2/3 tablets in a year lol. :p

Lets see I thought Apple was suing Samsung at this moment over some cheap phone no one cares about or would mistake for an iphone. Maybe Apple needs to get back to what they are good at since its not like competition is going to go away or just sleep any more. :(

Apple isn't suing because some phone is competing with them, they're suing because it blatantly copies them.

Yup, since this is a decision that doesn't depend on hardware availability or anything.

They should have had Retina even in the iPad 1, don't you think!

Yeah, and Apple should have released the iPhone 4 in 2006 not 2010. What were they thinking!

and don't get me started on the terrible decision NOT to release the 27" iMac in 1995! It would have killed back then!

;)

No its not fine.

iPad is supposed to be good at certain tasks:

email - movies - photos - book reading
[-jobs]

2 of these 4 basic tasks require a high quality display. I am not saying that the current display is useless, but if you think that the iPad provides a good reading experience for book/magazine readers and other text oriented apps, then you are mistaken. In my opinion, iPad NEEDS a good, high resolution display which makes the text clearer and easier to read.

Again, not saying that the current iPad is useless in that regard, but it isn't useful either.

Uses horrid PenTile matrix though

Surprised there has been so little mention that this display uses the horrid PenTile technology which means not only is the quoted resolution not the panel's true pixel resolution, but it also defeats one the the prime benefits of a retina display in having sharper text.

Whilst I've love to see a retina display on the iPad, I'll take a lower res, but colour accurate IPS display before an over contrasted AMOLED screen using PenTile any day of the week.

Okay I'm sorry but I just don't understand this view at all. The iPad (1&2) has a pixel density higher than EVERY Apple computer with the exception of the current Macbook Air, is used (or should be used) at a distance equivalent to that of a laptop and there's never been any complaints of, say, the 17" MBP having a low pixel density.

Now you can say that a retina display would produce better results, that's fine. But *required* for reading books and text and that the current screen does not make it useful (and yes, that does mean you're calling it useless btw, there ain't really a middle ground there) is just nonsense.

I used to think the iPad's display resolution was just slightly below what it could've been (but I was pretty happy with it)...until the iPhone 4 came out with retina display. Once I saw clear, sharp text, I started noticing that the iPad's native resolution for text was slightly blurry and pixelated, unless you really zoomed in on it.

Consider me paid in advance whenever a retina display iPad comes out...

I will add my voice to yours. I own the iPhone4 and the iPad2, and there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the iPad would benefit greatly from higher resolution. Everything, text in particular, gains clarity, and the need for zooming would be eliminated or at least greatly reduced. And I can't even focus closer than 40 cm.

Maybe the time of resolution independent GUIs will finally be here after over a decade of preparation?
Nah.

For what it's worth at least two analysts has predicted that the iPad 3 will indeed get a pixel-doubled Retina display.

I'd say it is almost certain after this news. Can't wait, since Apple has obviously been prepping for it already.

An iPad with the resolution of an iMac. Amazing. Closer and closer to a portable-personal-all in one.

Notice how nobody gives a toss about OLED now Retina became the new buzz word.

Well I'd want both, but realistically that won't happen for some time. Still, LCD is an old tech and the transition to OLED will be much welcome.

Oh we do, and you can rest assured Apple still has it's eyes set on the technology due to not needing any backlight, meaning it can contribute to thinner devices. But the technology needs to be there at the right price point, and deliverable in Apple volumes, preferably with second sources available, so a single manufacturing plant can't shut down an entire Apple product line. Apple will be there when all the pieces of the puzzle are present.

:)

Apple marketing-speak is probably not the best source to quote. Of course they're going to say "four times" instead of "twice" because it sounds better, whether or not it's technically accurate according to Wikipedia or whichever quasi-legitimate source one chooses to cite from teh Intarwebs.

BTW, that same Wikipedia article claims that "A new more-than-HD resolution of 2560×1600 WQXGA was released in 30" LCD monitors in 2007". Oops

Now this is progress. I've been using this resolution on a 30inch display and the pixels are tiny. On a 10inch display will be impossible for the human eye to see a pixel. Come on iPad 3! So glad I didn't purchase the iPad 2.

2006, when I bought mine.
