Samsung 850 EVO alternatives for 2011 MBP

Somehow out of topic, but really appreciate you guys explaining though.

Yeah I was just curious how didn't the rMB come with a fan. Based on most answer I guess it's safe to say that the 850 EVO is compatible with my specific Mac, right?

It most certainly is compatible, and a good choice.
 
I'm looking to do the same upgrade for my Macbook Pro 6,2 (mid 2010) and fell on this post from searching.

Did the OP make the install? Did it go well? I plan on doing this over the weekend. I'm probably gonna have to make an image on time machine and then add the new hard drive and boot from there? I forgot how to do it, but google should serve me just fine.
 
I've used the same Samsung 850 Evo in two macs and it has done well in both. First was in a 2010 MBP that I was using, before selling that I put the old HDD back in and transferred the drive to my Mom's 2012 MBP. She loves it as it brought new life to her computer.

Install is super easy. Remove the back screws and make note of where each one came from. HDD should be held in by a bracket with two screws, remove it and lift HDD out. Disconnect the cable. Use torx screwdriver to remove studs from the side of the HDD and put studs on new SSD. Repeat other steps in reverse.

I used Carbon Copy Cloner before removing the drive on my 2010 and made a bootable clone with recovery on the new drive. On my Mom's 2012 I used Disk Utility which worked just as well. Do your research and find out which method you would like to go.
 
But how were you able to make a bootable clone on the new drive? Did you use a drive enclosure or something? I see what Carbon Copy does, but I wont be able to send it to my SDD with my old HDD installed.

I only had a 32GB flash drive - can I still install my new SSD? I dont have anything on the HDD that I desperately need.
 
Well I actually just did a Google search and I can make a USB flash drive a bootable drive. I can just download Sierra OS installer and should be good to boot from the hard drive.
 
I used a HDD enclosure. I also have a usb-c to SATA connector just for drives I need to quickly connect to.
 
I actually just picked up a new external HDD and put a TM backup on it and then added the new SSD. From there, I just restored from the TM backup and good to go.
 
I put a 850 SSD in my 2012 13" MBP a few weeks ago. I wanted to start with a fresh copy of the OS so I simply installed the SSD, formatted it and then did the internet recovery. I made the mistake of connecting to my wifi which for some reason, internet recovery was going to take several hours to do. I then stopped the download, connected my ethernet cable and rebooted. The recovery then took minutes instead and was very fast.

Once that was done, I connected my old HD to a docking station, one that I simply plug the old HD into and copied my iTunes music from it's music folder to the SSDs music folder and all was right with the world.

I though that installing 16GB of RAM into my MBP made a huge difference but installing an SSD makes my 2012 MBP seem just about as fast as my 2015 15" MBP. I will be using the 2012 more often now. I bought both MBPs new in 2015.

I got a used late 2011 Macbook Pro 13 for my niece. I replaced the existing 500 GB mechanical drive with a 240 GB 840 evo and I'm quite happy with the results. I made sure to upgrade the evo to the latest firmware, enabled trim in Sierra, and installed office 2011. I have used it for about 20 hours in total and haven't noticed any problems.

Anyone know what sort of problems may crop up with this evo? I was using the evo in a desktop windows machine for about a year before moving it to the Macbook.

If the machine is working correctly, I wouldn't worry about it honestly.
 
Definitely not looking for any problems 🙂

I just installed an OCZ Vertex 3 into a late 2011 MBP 13 and it's been working perfectly for a few weeks.

I'm looking forward to upgrading one more mid-2012 MBP 13 with a Corsair Neutron XTi SSD.
 
Thanks for the link. I read the article before and updated to the latest firmware before using the drive in a late 2012 mbp 13.
