I don't understand the need for smart speakers. Can't one just connect their phone to a bluetooth sound system and then use Siri from the phone?

Yes. But hopefully Apple will introduce a paid Bluetooth experience for user like you to give you the best of a premium product. After all, you are not giving Apple ~ $400 for the HomePod. Would only be fair for the rest of us Apple lovers if you’d have to pay for Bluetooth to get a similar functionality. I’d imagine around $10/month or so

If apple could release a google home mini competitor that I can hook up to my existing speakers and apple tv. I can't see the reason to have a separate home pod in my living room when I have an apple tv and 5.1 speaker system the only thing missing from the setup is a mic to allow 'hey siri' functionality.
Which your TV can do.

I think you are correct. With ML, being 5 months ahead you may as well be 5 years ahead.

With say, the amazon dot, these speaker systems are about convenience , and Apple are way over priced.

I like them, with amazon I can get a echo and dots in all the rooms, for less than one of those.... having one in the house does not work in my opinion, least 3

How do you have this set up? Apple TV is HDMI and you need to press the remote to talk to it .

What if one doesn't have an iPhone? (I know- that's sacrilege)

What if one doesn't have a bluetooth sound system?

Getting past both of those, how do the other people at your house use this sound system if you are out with your iPhone?

Your question is the same as the one about why not use iPhone as a remote for :apple:TV? Sure, that works fine until that mobile device goes mobile. Then the stationary device left back at home is useless until you bring the good remote back. Same here. That iPhone + bluetooth sound system becomes useless if the iPhone leaves the home with you.

The point of these smart speakers (like the :apple:TV + dedicated remote) is to be all-inclusive functional and STATIONARY devices back at home.

If you don’t have a smart phone I wouldn’t bother buying a HomePod. Better invest your money into a good sound system like Teufel and connect it to an MP3 player or whatever you have.

Also: if you’re multiple users then it would be smarter to connect different phones to a Bluetooth speaker. If you have one Apple Music account assigned to the HomePod and all listen different music on it - someone’s music will be screwed up. I wouldn’t appreciate it to have Apple suggest me some teenage bands all the time because my daughter listens to them on the HomePod. Apple was never good at separating accounts other than on the Mac. They would probably suggest you just buy a HomePod for every family member and place them next to each other...

This is exactly why i think the HomePod will be a flop. The target audience is somehow audiophiles without a good speaker system at home. I mean most audiophiles have a good system already, and it seems you couldn’t even connect the HomePod to it (unlike amazon and google)

It all depends on how much Apple values the privacy of their users. Multiple stories on the difficulties Apple is facing by not gathering detailed data on their users that would assist Siri to be more effective.
That has nothing to with Siri not understanding when I ask “driving direction to CB3XXX” in UK. What a stupid joke this Siri is!!

I don’t like what you have to say, but I totally agree with you. Amazon’s approach is way, way better than the HomePod approach.

At any rate, I won’t be buying either. I have whole home sonos. I know it would be great with Alexa but I really don’t want dots all over the house.

Cant wait for this "smart speaker" fad to slowly fade away.

Oh it won't EVER.
It's like saying many years ago, I hope this mechanical horse (car) fad will slowly die away.

It's just the beginning.

Consider this step one for the home user. The final step being DATA from Star Trek.

Give the Smart speaker more AI, Cameras for eyes, then the ability to move, then a human(ish) form.

Just a shame we are at 2017, almost 2018 and these are the best? we so far have for sale to the general public.

I don't really understand the appeal of these smart speakers. They are all over tech podcasts, tech blogs, Twitter, but literally nobody has one among all the people around me. It's probably because Amazon's non-existent international support, not to mention the creepy factor. Siri, although may not be as good as other voice assistant, has very good international support. Google Assistant may be an actual threat to Siri, not Amazon, if you consider the fact that there are many countries in the world.

Doubt it’s going to happen. If Apple is entering the smart speaker market, there’s likely long-term strategic benefit in them doing so, and Apple has the resources to ride it out until it succeeds.

We have seen this with the Apple Watch. Rough start, but in the end, the Apple Watch is pretty much the only smart watch which matters.

Assuming you are Japanese? I expect Alexa to improve rapidly. Siri isn’t even a player.

Google’s transcribe/translate is at best rough as anyone who is multilingual outside of Romance languages knows.

Being ahead by 6 months in this AI/ML race may as well be six years, or sixty years. The head start just compounds. It’s not a deficit you can crawl out of by buying a small subsidiary.

The main issue that I feel the Homepod will face will be the lack of third party support. While I may use Apple Music many don't. I think this thing will face many of the initial difficulties the original iPod had which was its dependency on the Mac. Once Apple opened it up to the PC it did much better.
Yea and that’s why I’m not opting for the Home Pod and decided to invest in Sonos instead.

Comments about how Samsung is a copycat because the title of this page says that it is aiming to compete with the Homepod, what about the many Echo or Alexa devices out there? I know that the mere mention of Samsung on here is enough to trigger some folk (Please just pretend Samsung doesn't exist etc), but if they release a good sounding bluetooth speaker at a decent price, what's the problem?

Competition is what drives innovation. Look at the reaction the iPhone 8 got with its "huge bezels" compared to almost every other flagship on the market. Apple may not need these companies with the amount of money they have, but the competition is certainly what gets Apple pulling it's finger out to produce better products.

I thought there was a mic in the apple tv remote

I kind of wish that MacRumors would just pretend Samsung just doesn't exist, it's just free advertising to a scummy company.

Who makes the TV in your home?
Who makes the display in your iPhone?
Who makes the components of your radio/fridge/washing machine/home appliance?
Who makes the parts of the speakers that go in your car?
Who makes the camera internals?
Who makes the headphones you listen with?

A lot of products wouldn't exist without such a scummy company.
