I'd have to see a "retina" iPad on display, but offhand I can't imagine why it's necessary. My iPad 2 display is crystal clear. I have no trouble reading it, even when the text is tiny. Pushing a display higher than HD on the iPad screen doesn't seem as necessary as on the iPhone, where screen real estate is at a premium.

I completely agree on this. My iPad screen is just beautiful, even a small type sizes or looking at fine detail.

It's a business relationship, genius. Talk about fanboys ...

Really now? So let me get this straight. Apple is trying to drive Samsung out of the Smartphone market and moving its chip manufacturing to TSMC, but still relies on Samsung for just about everything else... but its all good Samsung... nothing personal just business.

Thats a load of crap. Steve Jobs attacking just about anything with a power source is a personal battle. Thats the problem. Everything Apple does now is like some personal vendetta Jobs has against the tech world.

Like what? Like suing HTC and Samsung for copying Apple's designs? I suppose Apple should just let people steel whatever they want, right? Oh wait, that's Google.

Not participating in your fantasies.

Very good news. Also, all the "battery life naysayers" need to remember that the back light doesnt match pixel for pixel (unfortunately)...therefore the consumption won't be proportionally greater like they think.

I'd also love a semi matte option. DROOL

It's not personal-- it's not like, say, in your high school. Business relationships are defined by contracts, markets and the law. The same companies can find themselves on the same sides, or on opposite sides, of specific issues. There are processes for adjudicating the differences.

Been desperate to see the Maps app on a Retina iPad ever since first using it on my iPhone 4. The sharpness would be mind-blowing...

yeah like have you seen the way android has stolen the notifications fron IOS 5, :):)
If i was Samsung i would tell apple to piss off, i am sure that events will have soured the relationship, all the new technologies are not going to be offered to apple,

And that's why you'll never be CEO of a major company - you would turn away billions of dollars of business for no particular reason.

Thought you were a little more "with it" on business than this. Must be real bitter about your time at Apple Retail.

Apple is trying to get licensing fees for patents, they are not "trying to drive Samsung out of the Smartphone market". Read it how you want, I guess.

And every company researches the cheapest method for manufacturing. Also, any company with need of large purchase orders of expensive parts tries to have options. Doesn't Apple already have both Samsung and LG that can make the iPad screens, for instance? But Samsung's are better, so most come from there. Or what happens if an earthquake damages your major supplier? Better have another supplier at least close to a contract. That's just business.

I am just waiting on the 5120x2880 27" Retina displays to come out...now that would be amazing if we had a retina display on a Mac! Apple is focusing too much on the iPhone/iPad and not on the Mac!

That would be over kill and a massive waste of computering resources to drive a screen that large. Reason being is a computer monitor is what 3 ft or so away from your eyes so you do not need density that high.

As for the 4:3 ratio I am honestly not a fan of that. I honestly like the 16:10 ratio. 16:9 is just quite wide enough.

16:10 is what is used on the iPhone/iPod and I want to say the monitors.

That's because you are not looking at a small typeface.

There are simply not enough pixels on the screen to resolve the detail that some apps have attempted to use.

It's not a case of liking or not liking it, it's a simple fact.
You can't create a smooth typeface that's easy to read without enough pixels to make a clear structure of the individual character.

Your not the rest of the world.

My opinion is the compete opposite of yours. I LOVE the sharpness of my iPhone 4, but HATE the way small text is rendered on the iPad. If you can't see how bad and fuzzy smaller fonts are displayed on the current iPad, then you're very lucky indeed. But for many of us, it is almost unbearable. Especially after having gotten used to the gorgeous display of the iPhone 4.

I actually sold my iPad 2 for this reason alone. If Apple released a 'HD' version with a retina display, I would definitely buy it and I would be a very happy camper indeed. I would even be happy to pay up to an additional $150 for such a display.

The business I am in we scratch each others back. Without our contracts we are nothing. We also don't give keynotes blasting our contract holders. We do business with many of our rivals and we never post negative press about them because we use services they provide and in turn they buy our products.

Apple can't win here. No matter what it does it will be pilloried by some group for some imagined wrong perpetrated against it. If it delays announcement until they have enough supply for a worldwide release it hurts marketshare more than if they just release it a few countries at a time. The free market dictates whether it's worth scalper's time and effort. If there are people overseas that want an iPad day of release or soon after and are willing to pay 2, 3x retail, it will happen. You can't blame Apple for the marketplace. It's just one participant.

I did not say that I was blaming Apple for anything. I was simply saying it was highly annoying to watch resellers take the entire iPad supply and sell it for a steep markup. I don't think Apple can take any specific action, aside from a reservation system which frequently doesn't work anyway.

I know that the free market will solve all our problems if we only let it into our hearts -- like Jesus. However, the long term effect on Apple many not be desirable to them. If the iPad is not available this go-around there will be plenty of competition to choose from. Apple is certainly not the only manufacturer developing high resolution tablet displays.

It is highly annoying to whine about not getting instant gratification and complaining that one MUST buy from scalpers.

There is nothing wrong with putting in an order and getting it when it is ready. When you live all your life without a product, I consider it NOT life- threatening having to wait a few weeks.

Someone needs a hug today! I didn't say that not having an iPad was life threatening. From a consumer standpoint, its frustrating to not get a desired product--and long term that's not good for a company.

I imagine I struck a chord with resellers who may feel a little sensitive regarding my original post--wow.

Well, you may stand in line while reading Ayn Rand and order 20 iPads to resell with my blessing.

C'mon---you don't need to hate on this. First of all, it's a rumor. Second of all, if you have an iPhone 4 you must understand how incredible this would be on an iPad. I personally refuse to buy two iPads in one year, but I will be first in line when next year's model comes out. I am still skeptical that this will even happen this year, but if it does, then I say good for Apple for staying on top of the game and being competitive. This is not the same kind of market as the smartphone market and Apple is trying to stay on pace with the way things are moving.

Anyway, I have a feeling that if this thing is released this year that they will jack the price up to an amount I wouldn't have paid anyway. 2012 will be the year of a new iPad for me.

You don't have to buy it. I agree that for day to day use by many people the current screen is fine. Doubling the resolution will be great for many other people so no problem in having two kinds of iPads. In science, engineering, medicine, architecture and such there are endless applications producing high resolution images. At a minimum, for those people this will be great.

I wonder about that. Since an individual pixel will be smaller wouldn't need to be brighter (at the cost of more power) to compensate for size?

On the other hand, if you have four pixels occupying the space of one large pixel then the sum of the brightness of the four small pixels could equal the brightness of the old, large pixel so their would not need to be an increase in brightness.

I'm going to go with answer number two. It is the brightness per unit area that is important so the power to the backlight doesn't need to change.

If this rumor is correct and they are still at the testing stage for the displays it doesn't seem likely there will be a new high res iPad in the fall. Looks like the standard upgrade cycle will apply.

When it is released, I certainly hope its not the fiasco it was when the iPad2 came out. It was highly annoying to watch resellers stand in line 24/7 so that they can hawk iPads for twice the cost.

You could be right, but to my mind this doesn't seem to be that big of a project. The industry has made larger panels than this and they have made higher resolution panels than this. To date I don't think they have made this particular size and resolution so they did need to develop tooling and jigs and such, but it is not like this was the first i-ps display in history. I'll guess the more daunting challenge was developing the software and semiconductors.

It's still chicken-egg. Is it Apple's fault for suing over patents, or is it Samsung's fault for not licensing them in the first place?

If you're going to hate, I suggest both as targets rather than one.
