Forget the "true video iPod."

When will they release a true music iPod!?

apple already does have a "true music ipod"... the nano which can also store photos and audio podcasts. but seriously who puts photos and audio podcasts on their ipod? the nano is the perfect consumer ipod as its storage is around the average size of an itunes music library.

120 GB HD would be perfect for video ipod for now. when low cost high capacity flash drives become available watch out!

No, no. You misunderstood.

The current iPod plays video but it's not a "true video iPod" because it's not magic and doesn't smell like french fries. THAT would be a true video iPod!

Lots of people want this "magic iPod." In fact I've seen several posts in this very thread ask for it.

I'm simply saying that I would like a magic music playing iPod rather than a magic video-playing iPod.

Clearly the Nano (while a great device) is not what I'm looking for.

I don't understand the people on this site. Either they are stupid or just selfish, or I don't understand the positive/negative thing. People always marking improvements as negatives. How dare they increase HD space!!!

although the iphone is only 8gb it is the closest to a true video ipod, slame one of these 120gb drive in it, now you are on to something apple.

I can pass on the ~$75/mo with the phone functions, but if it's a unit with WiFi, a browser, and video-iPod capabilities a la iPhone plus a decent HDD (even a 40GB would do), I'd be on board.

I'd assumeApple could strip the phone technology and replace it with a HDD and maintain reasonably close pricing. If I were willing to venture a guess, I'd say:

iPod Pro (described above): 40GB ~ $399; 80GB ~ $499; 120GB ~ $599

iPod (wide/touchscreen only): 40GB ~ $299; 80GB ~ $399

There I go speculating again... Look out, Shaw Wu. I might just steal your "thunder."

Does anybody know what happens if you plug a larger capacity drive into an iPod of a smaller capacity? Will it "just work" (after restoring to factory settings, or whatever)?

but seriously who puts photos and audio podcasts on their ipod?

What? Regular iPods work great for audio podcasts! I tend to do a lot of late-night driving and I listen to 8+ hours of podcasts per week in my car. Sure, I could do that with a nano if I bought one in addition to my regular iPod, but why would I buy a nano when my video iPod can do it already?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point...

120GB would be very cool. But I still don´t get why did Apple only gave AppleTV a 40GB HD.

Because the on-board HD is not the actual storage, but rather the buffer. There's no need for all that space when the machine would regularly dump stuff you don't use when you want to watch something else.

It has been a while since the latest refresh... but I wish they would go with flash based drives.

I wish they would go with flash so the iPod would be faster. I know there is a space hit but the durability and speed would be amazing to say the least. But 120 GB does sound nice. :D

That's the 8GB Nano or any other full sized iPod... been that way for about 7 years.:)

120 gb, yep that ought to just about cover it...

If I took my entire library... it would be a nice start. If I take only the songs and videos/TV shows I like... then I would have about 60GB left. Give me Flash based HDD or give me death....

Or regular ones... I don't care. Just glad that no one is talking about that political ethical stock options crap.

So WTF are you looking for  .... plenty of devices out there that play music and do it pretty well?

Price I guess :)

Yeah... I will go with price... it already costs too much for what it can (can't) do... I would still get one if my TV didn't suck more than my old Compaq PC.

the iphone/cingular contract should include a subscription to access everything on the itunes store on the phone. then no one will care about drive space when it will only need to hold your playlists and whatever you can't get on itunes.

I can live with a 80gig ipod, I just want it to have the interface and bigger screen like the iPhone :(
But I doubt we wont hear anything till WWDC, and even then, wont see anything till the end-year holidays....
I'll start rolling the pennies come this June. Too much stuff I want to buy :)

I can't imagine ever needing that much capacity...but it makes the question of having your entire collection available almost meaningless. I mean, how many folks have an iTunes library over 120 GB?

I used to think like that... But now my 6GB iPod Mini has maybe 200 megs of free space, and the only thing in there is music and podcasts. When I move to a full-sized iPod, I'm going to video as well, and that means that my HD-consumption is going to go WAY up.

I have to say, this is good news in terms of future product development, but I refuse to buy another full-size iPod until Apple gets a clue and makes them bootable again. An iPod without Firewire is inferior to any iPod with it. My 2g 40GB iPod may be nearing capacity, but I am too disappointd with USB to consider a newer model.

Why do you want FireWire? Seriously?

Uh-huh. the difference between USB2 and FireWire would be neglible at best. Nowehere near that "I demand FireWire or I will never buy an iPod again!"-hysteria.
For fun, get yourself an external HD that has USB2 and FW.

Then load about 80GBs of information using USB2. Then do it via FW.

Now tell me they are the same speed.
