screen repair business intensifies...

[but honestly. take a random printout of an android tablet. print it on an A5 paper. pick a $2 kindle hard case and glue it inside. then run around screaming: i have a mockup of a bendable smartphone]

Only 99.95/month for up to 3 replacements a year.

bet 3 replacements won't last for 3 months

Publicly stating future intentions doesn’t make somebody “ahead of the curve.” Delivering on those intentions would. You’ll have to wait a year or more for a chance at your statement being accurate.

They already are ahead in my other tech aspects: displays, ergonomics, MST pay tech, dual curved edges, cameras.

Folding displays are just another layer to their future dominance.

Because Apple has no core competencies in bendable displays. They are happy with Samsung spending billions of dollars to develope an untested technology. There's zero risk to Apple. If Samsung (or LG) is able to make an effective mass produced bendable screen, Apple will happily buy tens of millions of them. They are literally doing that with Samsung's OLED tech. There's no reason they wouldn't do the same with bendable screens. Take Samsungs technology, and use it better.

Well, consider the news going around that Apple was looking for another screen manufacturer such as LG. If Samsung does pull it off, they might not let Apple have it and keep it for their own products as exclusive. They'll let Apple have the standard screens but not the ones that bend. Apple might be on its own.

This probably corroborates with the story of why Apple's scrambling because they probably did know about Samsung's bendable displays and probably got told off in advance "behind the scenes".

I really like this idea. Sure the device would be thicker, but you could easily get a device with 6.25" of screen size in the same length and width as the current iPhone 7. More importantly the screen area would be double since it would be pretty close to a 1:1 ratio as opposed to 16:9. For doing productive work this would be much easier to use than a tall, thin display.

I would readily accept a phone that is twice as thick as the iPhone to get a display like that.

Because if Samsung does it well and succeeds in getting it right, and theoretically, takes the market with the bendable screens, it's going to backfire on Cook if he pooh poohs it and then does a 180. Then people are going to wonder why Apple waited so long to do the bendable screens and not being the leader of the market.

No guts, no glory.

Haven’t they been announcing it for years now? I swear every year we get a story about Samsung and bendable displays.

Yeah. Meanwhile, Apple are essentially silent on future products. Other than leaks for iminant products.

Apple is judged on present day products you can, at the very least, pre order online, if not walk into any Apple Store and buy.

Competitors seem to be judged on R&D projects.

They are rarely the first company to try out a new technology. They just end up making he best version and making the most money. It’s a better strategy in my eyes. The masses don’t look at Samsung as any sort of technological leader, just a company who is willing to try anything to claim first.

Agreed.

Horrible 'announcement'. Totally useless. No information to glean. Suffice it to say, when it comes out, after all the technical challenges have been overcome, it will be cutting edge, when it comes out, at some point.

Samsung holds a press conference, Apple doesn't bat an eye…
Apple holds a press conference, and Samsung, along with all other Far East knock off brands are sweatin' balls.
Apple may be behind the eight ball when it comes to the latest and greatest tech, but all the players know that whatever Apple says today, they are going to steal the show…
Even without the black turtleneck, jeans ", and sneakers.
This announcement shows their desperation.

Umm, has the word GIMMICK been used yet?

This sounds like something out of Futurama, particularly the episode where Bender D Bending Rodriguez enters the Bending Olympics and fails to win any events against humans, and comes out with a quote that epitomises how Samsung execs should feel about this sort of cringeworthy PR nonsense, driven by their obsession with Apple...

"I’m so embarrassed. I wish everyone else was dead!”

Apple is hardly ever first in new technologies, and Cook especially is very political in not “pooh poohing” advances made by other companies. Sometimes, like with Google Glass, he might say something like it’s too expensive or he doesn’t see people wearing it, not to diss Google but to explain why Apple is pursuing a different course.

Apple waits to implement new technology, rather than rushing into whatever the newest thing is and doing a poor job of it. That’s why people like Apple stuff: it’s not cutting edge, it’s safe and reliable. And when it comes to tech, sometimes safe and reliable means the difference between getting in the way versus getting something done.

Kudos to Samsung for doing their thing, but Apple won’t hurt even if they pull it off.
