MacRumors posted it. No reason to take offense on the pseudo-glorious iPhone announcement day. At least, this is more of a actual surprise.

it's an announcement about a "maybe next year" of something they already said they are working on. hardly a surprise.

their timing is bad too, because it will get burried in all the apple stuff, the media likes to put in the front.

I'm not surprised that Samsung would go for it because they've been working on this for a long time. If they manage to pull this off for next year's release, Tim Cook's career, or Jony's, is over. It'll be interesting to see how Apple will react or pooh pooh it.

I'm rooting for Samsung to get it out there, even though I don't own their phone products. While Apple sits pretty, Samsung plows through to 'make it happen' without waiting to 'get it right'.

Come on Ballmer; give it up. You were historically wrong on the iPhone and everything mobile, so why do you spend your retirement trying to throw shade on Apple under this pseudonym? Better hurry and get off the internet before the new stuff comes out and only makes your day worse. Get under those covers quickly!

First time they gave some kind of timeline so it's a surprise. They are already killing the competition with their current designs so this is just something to keep being excited about.

I don't understand the point of this announcement:

"Sometime in the future, if we're able to, we'll release a product using technology we're currently developing"

Okay...?

Shout out to them for being so successful, but come on... This announcement is weird, in poor/lame taste and so unnecessary.

In other news, Samsung just announced the release of their screenless, holographic, in-brain-implanted device sometime in 2045. They say there are some real technical hurdles they must cross first, so they reserve the right to postpone that date. (Eye Roll)

Ugh! I was all excited to buy a new iPhone... but now they announced this.... huh, I think I may have to wait till next year to upgrade my phone. (End Sarcasm)o_O:confused:;):)

... I don’t look at Samsung as any sort of technological leader, just a company who is willing to try anything to claim first.

There ya go buddy. Polished up your statement to be more accurate. Always happy to help out a fellow forum member.

No doubt you will remember the trusted old EigerMan F10 and F20 do you? NO? Do you remember the iPod - undoubtedly you do. That's the difference between getting it done and getting it done right. Samsung could be offering free unicorns today and no one would care about their desperate bit for attention, any attention for that matter.

Wow Samsung! Copying Apple again with their bending iPhone, they had it first on iPhone 6. Get out of here!

People must care otherwise Samsung wouldn't be mentioned here and you wouldn't see so many people with a S8. You posted a reply so you definitely care as well....

Samsung had their bendable display protype before that abysmally built iPhone 6 and iPad air 1. Both bent due to cheap aluminum frames.

Haven’t they been announcing it for years now? I swear every year we get a story about Samsung and bendable displays.
Agreed,

Feels like a catty “Me too” , we have something to announce soon as well, gimmick.

Honestly Samsung’s products shine on their own, and have a lot of respectable innovations that I appreciate and like. Their middle school attitude and similar games is the only piece preventing me from being one of their customers. That and touch wiz.

Admittedly Apple does play some of these games too, however they feel a bit more grown up, college pranks perhaps?

Ok this is cool and all but what about the long term effects on the screen from folding/unfolding all day, without a hinge? If the flex or pixels change at all over time then that's a red flag, isn't it? Mind you, if anyone can do it, it would be Samsung.
I'm wondering about the same thing. If they can make the screen durable, it would be a great breakthrough as I can see some neat applications for the technology.
