What is the "B" version? I think I bought the B version, but so far, no complaints!
yup.. thats how Samsung differentiates Model yearsThe B version is from last year and only had a USB-C input.
The C version is new to 2023 and adds an HDMI 2 input in addition to the USB-C.
Cooler Master Tempest gp27u.
4K. Mini LED, quantum dot LCD. 576 dimming zones. HDR1000 (max 1200). 160hz VRR. 2x HDMI 2.1 @48 gigs. DisplayPort 1.4. USB-C with 90w PD if you want a single cable connection. Comes with a height adjustable, swiveling mount. Said mount also lets you rotate it 90 degrees vertically. It's VESA so you can always use your own mount too.
It only costs $800. The speakers are garbage, but that's the only knock you can find on it.
Looks promising, especially going by the rtings.com review. Am a little wary based on user reviews, but it does seem like firmware updates have fixed many of those issues. Does this jibe with your experience? Can the firmware updated from a Mac? Also, can the brightness be changed using the Mac keyboard or is that unique to the Apple displays and the "LG Apple" monitor?
Haha - I can relate! Thanks for the very useful info. After many years on iMacs it's been quite some time since I've monitor shopped and they all truly have their pros and cons. I think I'm down to the Coolmaster, the 42" LG OLED, and the Studio Display. Mac Studio is ordered though!the monitor is doing its job, my brain is not.
Looks like the S9 is finally coming... Samsung product page with full specs is now live, albeit no price or date yet.
I chickened out and ordered the Studio Display. The lack/quality of user review for the Tempest and the only apparent seller just didn't give me enough confidence to go with this display for my primary workstation. I'm glad it's on my radar though and hope to see more out of them in the future.Yeah, the initial flaws noted in the firmware have all seemingly been fixed. The firmware updates are done via USB flash drive. The drive plugs into the USB A on the back of the monitor closest to the outside, then thru the OSD to initiate it. The brightness slider seems to only be adjusting my laptop screen when that’s open - when closed, I use a Logitech MX Keys and the brightness keys on F5/6 are changing the backlight brightness - which seems to yield no discernible change in SDR. I’d launch an HDR video but my kids are sleeping, I’d wager I’d see a difference there though. The HDR is pretty intense at a little more than arms length away.
If you’re looking for a KVM, it has it. I don’t use it though so I have no hands on experience. I run through a CalDigit dock to DP. I have hooked up straight thru the USB-C just to do it, and through the HDMI. I also use it on my iPad for the new stage manager. I’m still getting the hang of that but no issues on its function, switching SDR to HDR for media apps, and all issues appear to be on the user error front - the monitor is doing its job, my brain is not. 😉
