Not surprising in the least bit. They both are making money off of the iPhone so why stop it from happening?

soooooo... those iPhones and iMacs just make themselves? I don't buy Pages, or iMovie, I also don't buy OSX nor iOS upgrades? I keep buying Apple hardware, Not Apple software so wouldn't that make Apple primarily a Hardware Manufacturer? Granted they do only run their own software but they give that stuff away.

Well he's right, Apple doesn't make anything really, they contract out all the manufacturing for all their gadgets, even the Assembled in the USA Mac Pro is made in a facility not owned or operated by Apple.

Samsung must just love the fact they can slam Apple all they want and Apple keeps crawling back because they need the chips that they can't produce themselves. Make billions of dollars off of Apple and use that money against them in the mobile market. :)

Jobs jobs jobs ...

I'm glad folks are fueling job and manufacturing growth in the USA. Especially in my state of NY.

Although not a shocker, I continue to be amazed that no one seems to be able to scale the way Samsung does. Therefore Apple continues to "sleep with the enemy."

Currently TSMC is far bigger in scale than Samsung as a fab, it's actually not really close. Apple has successfully transitioned away from Samsung to TSMC this generation and is making more new devices than ever so it's pretty clear Samsung isn't the only company capable of mass production of A processors.

However TSMC is known to drive hard bargains as well and from Apple's point of view they'll always try to diversify the supply chain. One thing not mentioned in this article is the role of Global Foundries, with whom Apple has been linked to and they share the exact same technologies as Samsung.

Get ready for the childish Samsung haters to be writing more "down with Samsung" on their Samsung powered iOS devices.

So far it's the opposite. The thread is full of anti fanboys taunting the fanboys/Samsung haters. Also most iOS devices of this generation aren't powered by Samsung, the only exception being the "new" iPad mini 3. Ironically the majority of high end Samsung phones aren't powered by Samsung.

Remember when Samsung was deemed indispensable to iPhones and it was a big deal? Yet when Apple made iPhones without Samsung part in it, no one really made any big deal out of it even though it was a big transition. Yet when the new article comes out with some rumor involving Samsung, no one recalls how Apple was able to switch between suppliers without too much trouble.

Which is like Saying AMD and nVidia do not make anything, or even Nintendo, they all contract out the manufacturing, often to the same companies used by Apple, namely TSMC and Foxconn. It's puzzling why Apple is usually the only company where the manufacturing entity is considered so important.

Anybody who says that is ignorant. Not only does Samsung make a lot more than just smartphones & tablets, they're also fundamentally a different company from Apple in that they're a manufacturer. Apple is primarily software & marketing.

Oh dear lord. Do you have any idea how big Samsung is? Apple hasn't got the kind of leverage with Samsung that they had with a tiny little company like GT. There is most assuredly not the same kind of "you will take this deal and love it" dictation of terms. Samsung is more than big enough to say "Ha, piss off."

Get some humor dude. Relax....

Good for Samsung. They're really hurting for profit these days so I'm sure they're thrilled to get the revenue.

Ironic that Apple has decimated them in the mobile space and now is increasing their order of parts to power said devices that lead to Samsung's own demise in mobile.

You know, for a marketing company Apple sure spends very little on it. You are truly ignorant if you ignore Apple being a hardware design company, a PC/device distributor, a media outlet, retail chain operator, etc anyway.

You think size means you can start saying piss off to one of your biggest partners? Come on man, stop pretending you have the slightest clue about business.

Actually they kinda do with Samsung's fab business where Samsung has very little clientele outside Apple and is a new entrance to the market. Which is probably why Samsung went the extreme measure of sharing the technology with Global Foundries so that they can offer something more competitive with the market leader, TSMC.

Thinking about all those people who have written "I'll never buy anything made with Samsung parts again," I wonder what mobile devices they will buy now? (rhetorical)

That was never claimed, just you making it up.
What people have said is "I will never by any Samsung products again", meaning stuff Samsung sales.
People don't buy A processors designed by apple. They buy the Apple devices as a whole.

Actually at AI there are some people who will return an Apple product if it has Samsung parts inside ...

news flash Samsung handset division has not made a profit in 3 quarters.

news flash Samsung handset division has not made a profit in 3 quarters.

I wonder why??
They spit out 5 of the almost same model phone every 4 months...
You can't shotgun people into buying a product that has so many variations. but they don't get that yet..

Samsung's profits are way down. They are less of a threat to Apple now that the latter has released larger phones that neutralize Samsung's previous remaining advantage. And Samsung is a competent fab. At least now Apple has options.

Samsung's 14nm FinFETs won't be ready for next year, and it seems debatable whether TSMC will be able to supply 16nm FinFETs in sufficient volume for Apple next year, so we could see a repeat at the 20nm node.

If there is a split in supply, I would take it to mean TSMC is still supplying chips for older designs - not that they're both producing the same design in a shared scenario.

Irony? What irony? Apple choosing Samsung is basically saying "WE ARE TAKING THE HIGH ROAD AND GIVING YOU BUSINESS REGARDLESS OF YOUR LOW LEVEL SALES SHENANIGANS AGAINST US".

Uh, let's not forget Apple's repeated lawsuits against Samsung for design infringement, etc. Samsung's ad campaigns. Apple trashing Samsung phones, tablets, everything. Samsung fighting back with equally-low big words. Etc.

Neither side is particularly brilliant here, the fact remains there are still many business deals to be conducted between the two because they need one another for many things.
