Samsung Completes Redesign of Galaxy Fold That Fixes Screen Failures

Nobody wants one, or this is dead in the water, or foldable phones are a waste of time...until Apple releases one. :rolleyes:
 
I had a folding phone once, and never had a problem with it. Motorola Razr I think it was. Maybe Samsung could have a look at one of those and get some ideas.
 
If you're going to do a foldable screen, why not make two screens with no bezel on the contacting edges, so there's no apparent seam? The hinge can press those two contacting edges together to minimize the appearance of a seam, and software can do some work also.

The screen technology is not there yet. The first Microsoft Future Vision video, with the Chinese tech rep in the airport with his two part phone (at the 2:08 mark) that he could magnetically snap together into one phone. Something like that.
 
Samsung's take is useless. You shouldn't have two separate screens.

Huawei's version of this is much better and is what a real foldable phone should be about - transforming a smaller screen to a bigger one (and vice versa). Samsung cheats and uses two screens, one of which is too small and hideous.
 
Flexible Display technology, yes - for larger screens and installations. Foldable technology, No, thanks. There is always a finite bend radius for any material, and ultimately it will fail. There is really no need for this.
 
They seem to have a pattern of rushing thing to retail even though they are junk. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that i can sell you cheap, it starts right up, shuts down and starts right up....begin loop. 14 months for over $300, what a deal!
 
Never buy a first gen product. Especially Samsung first gen. Apple first gen not good either (Apple Watch no software support after 3 years). Same with iPhone (2007). Same with iPad (2010). All with 3 years of support. We all know the iPad 2 was supported much longer.

It’s a joke to buy first gen products. Unless u plan to resell it quickly (which I did).

And at almost $2000 for the foldable. No way.

Isn't that par for the course? I fully expect the AW to stop getting updates after three years. I still use a Series 1. It's slow as crap, but it allows me to see all my notifications and most importantly, switch songs and control my audiobook playback.

This? Not exactly. But I want a further refined version of this concept running iOS. I agree with the people who criticized how Android runs on tablets. Samsung had to rework a lot of apps to work specifically with this device. My experience with Samsung’s customizations make me wary of eventual slowdowns. They finally seem to have gotten the upper hand on lag on their phones but now they’re starting all over again with this.

However, with Apple giving tablets their own OS, I don’t think Apple wants to move in the direction of foldables. I guess when Samsung pitched their prototype to them, they noped away from that idea.

They seem to want to optimize the OS for tablets and phones separately. That’s not only the path of least resistance, it’s good business because they will get to sell us two or more separate devices that work the best they possibly can.

While I’d love to have one device that can fill two use cases, I am beginning to see how such a device could end up mediocre all around, at least for the next few years.

There is sage advice in that quote. Except for every time new tech is released, except for “power” users, except consumer trends, except for pretty much everything else. Then it’s why isn't Apple bandwagoning this or when Apple’s new model for the year hits, “I never asked for this.”

Mind you, I’m not disagreeing with you or the quote: But, how often is Apple criticized for not giving people what they “want”? How often is Apple criticized for delivering their idea of the ‘customer experience’ over technology?

And how often is anyone allowed to defend Apple’s products or choices without being labeled a sheeple, zealot, hippy, or whatever. And told you’re just drinking the kool-aid.

Not that I’m putting Apple on an ivory pedestal and saying they’ve never made bad computers or devices or etc

Not that I’m saying there aren't valid criticisms either.

I remember a standup comedian with a bit in his routine on how Arm & Hammer had the most ingenious business plan. They get you to buy their product and literally pour it down the drain.

How’d you reckon the market would be and we all followed your advice not to buy first gen?
I can tell you. We wouldn’t be where we are now in terms of technology, safety or features.

Why didn’t you try and do it?
Everybody makes mistakes. Remember that first Apple puck shaped mouse?
