It's beyond believable that both APPLE and SAMSUNG had this 'light-bulb' moment at the same time, about the market needing a 'smart-watch'.

One of them is copying the other! Sammy, if nothing else, you are sooo consistent. :D

I guess you also think apple was the first to think of a full touchscreen device on rectangular shape ?

Samsung is so cute. Now they can sell fewer watches AND smartphones than Apple in the U.S.

Guess what? As incredulous as it sounds, Sony, Sharp and NEC had the same "light-bulb" moment too....as well as me! Wow, can you believe it? The wonders of independent thought.

Looks just like my first Casio Calculator watch :)

wow.. times have changed haven't they. The only different, is now its a small miniature touchscreen, you better make sure u have small fingers, otherwise you'll be doing allot of bad calculations. Not to mention reading webpages, text, and doing email..

The last thing in the world would be everyone wearing large wrist watches to the point every manufacture would be making their own designs..... It wouldn't be too difficult to pass down the street and look at everyone arms with these things and say "oh ya, thats a Samsung.... That's Apple... "

Thats innovation for ya.

I'm confused. Are you denying that the watch in the picture is from 2009?

Here's a Sony SmartWatch with customer reviews from April 2012. Are you going to claim that there weren't any smartwatches before Apple brings one out.

Stop being so emotionally attached to a corporation.

And yes, there were Smartphones before the iPhone. Heck, my Pocket PC from 2004 looks like an iPhone when in the static icon mode. Did Apple copy Microsoft then?

Read BaldiMac below. He gets it.

I think you are being a little too literal here. The implication was that smartphones before the iPhone were forgettable and niche. Much like current smart watches.

Read BaldiMac below. He gets it.

yet it doesnt make it any less true.

Apple, And even samsung are not usually "first" players. Despite what the Cult of Job's will believe.

No one should deny their impact in the social relevance of many technologies. Nobody denies that without the iPhone, the modern day Cellular Smart Phone MIGHT be completely different, or behind. I don't think anyone in this thread is saying that.

no one is truly denying that Smartphones were niche products before the iphone. but they did exist. There are some who would be ignorant to this fact. Smartphones were very business oriented and never truly consumer focused till the iPhone, but Blackberries existed since 2000, Palm has smartphones runing both Palm OS and Windows as early as 2002, even HTC had something out pre-iphone (that sexy slider running windows).

the watch market COULD be the same. we don't know yet cause we dont know what Apple has up it's sleeve. But the concept of Smart Watches isn't new. Apple didn't come up with it first, and it's not like they suddenly thought up the idea without seeing what was already happening in the Market. We've had 'smart' watches since the 80's, where companies have attempted to shove things in like Calculators, phone books, calenders, media players, heck, there was even a TV watch! NEC, Sony for examples already have full screen watches that link up to your smartphone in the market for over a year. Will Apple do better? We don't know. there's hope that their 'think tanks' can put together something more than a niche product, but we don't know that yet. Same goes for Samsung. So anyone who claim outright "apple will do it better" is absolutely drinking the cool aid. We just don't know!

But to say that Apple is some supreme god of innovation and comes up with things nobody else has ever done, and they're the only company that can ever do well is borderline... religious.

you have to admit that when you're a fan of the industry as a whole and want the best products for everyone, and in the mindset that tools and toys to fit needs and desires, strict adheration to one company without even aknowledging that there is history before it, or that ideas are almost communal. They don't come from a vacuum and Apple really in this regard isn't different than those already before them. What they do, They do execution extremely beautifully well. I will never deny it. I fell in love with the iPod range when they came out, the Touches are beautifull devices, the iphone is absolutely a rudder for what has come out after it.

But there are many people, if you read through this thread alone who believe that Apple literally invented every piece of technology that they use today and everyone else copied them and it's impossible that those ideas existed before.

So you think Apple uses off the shelf parts for their batteries? The batteries in their laptops are asymmetrical, filling up all the extra spaces in the laptop, something no other OEM does.

Yup, looks like an off-the-shelf part to me.

iPhones have very good battery life while using smaller batteries than competitors. Apple obviously has engineers specifically for batteries which give them a competitive edge.

The only 'technology' in Apple's batteries is the lithium-ion/polymer type which is not unique to Apple devices.

You can say that Apple configures iOS to be very power efficient, but to attribute the decent battery life in iPhones and iPads to the 'technology' in the battery is ridiculous.

Apple themselves agree with what I'm saying btw so there's no need to come back with some silly claim about Apple's lithium batteries being more advanced than other manufacturers'.

http://www.apple.com/batteries/
Rechargeable lithium-based technology currently provides the best performance for your Apple notebook computer, iPod, iPhone, or iPad. You can also find this standard battery technology in many other devices. Apple batteries share the characteristics common to lithium-based technology in other devices. Like other rechargeable batteries, these batteries may eventually require replacement.

You're reading too much into it, yet somehow missing the point. I'm not saying that Apple was/is the first to market in the literal sense.

But ask Joe Average off the street, (not nerds like us ho hang in tech forums), what the first smart phone was - guarantee most would site the iPhone. First tablet? iPad. Same scenario. End of story.

I agree. average joe doesn't know

But it doesn't make them correct.

ignorance is never an excuse to be wrong.

Can't wait to see their presentation then - unpack 2 :)

They'll probably present it in the successful and classy Broadway style... Like some entertaining show on stage with a man driving around using his "swatch"..oops "S-Watch" to help him on certain tasks like getting around town, chosing a restaurant, paying for dinner via his watch, finding a hooker and so on... it will be fun and well received.

Facts and reality are not defined by the most ignorant among us. Nor are they defined by the flacks on Madison Avenue. Sorry.

Oh because average joe says then it must be true? What is this logic?!

Don't be ridiculous by deflecting. The point is that the emotionally dependent fanboys are accusing Samsung of starting to make watches because of Apple, and now you two are twisting and turning it to say that it's that it was a niche product before Apple, trying to get away from the original point.

The only reason why Apple will sell a lot of watches is because of emotionally dependent fanboys. Even if the watch is a piece of crap, it will sell a lot. Yet you guys will give them credit that they revolutionized the game. When the real reason is there are millions of people who will simply buy it because of the logo.

I never said they were correct in the technical sense. But the truth is, until the average joe 'gets it' the industry just bumbles along in insignificance. Post iPhone/iPad the industry has had a rocket up its a**. The PC market is in a downward spiral.

Other per devices might have helped shape the iPhoneiPad, but these iproducts shaped the industry.

History suggests current 'smart watches' might not look so smart in the near future. This is my point.

Chill big man. I think you're getting too emotionally attached to this discussion.

I owned a Samsung phone before Apple came out with the iPhone. The Samsung ran Windows CE and was an abortion. A steaming pile.

A watch would be absolutely terrible unless they can copy Apple.

Dear Father might buy one but nobody else ...

Sure buddy

Hmm because watches that do things were never thought of before Apple.
