My wife's sister owns one. Not only was it a hideous looking phone, but yes, it becomes thicker, more thick than I want a phone to be, and when expanded, it had a lovely seam that was both visibly noticeable, but also noticeable to the touch.

Foldable phones are a solution in search of a problem.

Foldables are the future, they get better and thinner every year. Competitors to the Fold are getting close to the dimensions of the Pro Max phones when folded and barely having a crease at all. Slab phones were good 16 years ago when introduces and haven’t had any real evolution since.

As for being a brick my iPhone 14 Pro Max is as much a brick in the pocket as the Fold is, and isn’t useful for anything more than calling, texting and playing music because of the smaller screen.

But I am sure you will change your tune once Apple makes one, the market is growing and the projections are that it will be a huge market in the coming years. Apple will not want to miss out on that for sure, once they feel they can make a good product they will.

I think the foldable world would be far better if all these great foldables in China were Available everywhere. I’ve got word that the one plus fold will not be coming to U.K. for example. Massive blow and again gives Samsung basically no competition here aside from the pixel fold. I think lack of availability is what will hurt foldable being anything but cool and be bought by select people Which doesn’t help marketing.

Just for peoples info if you preorder a flip 5 or fold 5 from Amazon UK at the moment they’ll shave £100 off the RRP.

Foldable phones are a solution in search of a problem, and Apple is never going to make you one.
Nope to both. Bigger screen, smaller package, and some of us like/need that capability. As for whether Apple will make one -- I suspect so just so they wont get shut out of the market.

First words from MKBHD: This is what happens when Samsung settles!

New hinge, new chip. Wow!

Thai only shows that for the last 2-3yrs MKBHD is getting paid more by Google to hype them up! Before he was on the Samsung fan-boy trend. No algorithm on youtube favours him and his videos and subs count with no ads - it’s cash and device incentives.

Pay careful attention when he says “we got this/then/these into the studio” vs “we bought these/this/them” or replaces We with I. Then you’ll know.

KEY: What MKBHD FAILS to speak about and admit is the refined software that the cover screen offers and promises to update. He mentions it but he doesn’t say much in comparison to the Find N2 Flip nor Razr40+ so as a too reviewer he doesn’t do his job!

More critically doesn’t speak much about the hinge, feel of the screens nor typing in them, call quality music and video games payback indoors outdoor in sunlight etc. None of that.

I used Samsung for a while and never again. They amount of bloatware are crazy. The whole feel of it all is...cheap. It looks cheap and feels cheap.

Android are obviously a great OS, no denying that. But what Samsung does with it and with their products are not the greatest showcase for it. It baffles me that Samsung are such a big player in the phone/tablet business.

I used to repeat the same verbatim without actually knowing first hand since the S9/S10 series. Now with OneUI 4 and up, form what I’ve seen and research much of that is GONE and they’ve added great software that is missing from Googles “hallowed clean” suit (again remember we’re that clean Android skin garbage talk came from MKBHD (notice that revising phones keeps him talking THE most, keeps him busiest THE most than the car channel the childish tech talk nonsense where half the claims is false?!

Samsung Dex is great and a unique offering that Motorola miserably copied. I’m hoping pure Linux Distro support returns to Dex soon.

The Flip form factor could actually win me over to Android once the mini 13 becomes obsolete. I hope Apple will provide an alternative.

I’ve been eyeing the Fold factor in the Oppo Find N2 for months, almost bought it Va the 13 mini until I found out that native google services needed to be put on (most import retailers do this but do you really know of that all that’s out on? What about a hard reset or OS/Security patch update removes it how you get it back on?) that and the key no international warranty support killed that shine.

This was especially a nail about the Oppo Find N2 Flip a great competitor.

Now the Flip 5 delivered very well! I could switch or try out end of August! The pre-order incentives are great something Apple soon enough may be forced to get into.

Folds are still a gimmick

No they are NOT! Folds started the Smartphone craze back with the Nokia 9000i communicator and the pasiego flip style Ericsson R380 - Thai actually was based on Epoch (which spawned Symbian) while the 9000i did not allow you to install software rod your choice and no offerings.

Nokia’s last hurrah with the Fold smartphone was the E90 running S60 3rd edition built in physical keyboard and for that over the years perfected the hinge and screen calm time etc. It was a beast and a personal security tool as well!

Ericsson’s last attempt was the P90 I think with 2keys per button in QWERTY that did not cover the screen. Not a fan favourite of the evolution unfortunately.

So check again when you say it’s a gimmick.

There 6 competitors with full fold communicator AndroidOS phones in various markets with OnePlus to jump in this fall.

Samsung just aren’t really trying when it comes to fold. Flip looks good though

Ooh but they don’t need to just yet. Their offering is the yard stick all are jockibg against.

Sure Dex could’ve came to Flip 5 or stylus on the cover screen which a competitor got right along with matching the hinge slimness months earlier.

BUT NONE offer the build quality and warranty nor the OS and security updates (Oppo does this far) along with Global sales, reach and shipping and carrier partnerships for contracts. NOBODY!

Samsung can do what Apple has done for years. Sit and watch others play catch up and refine offerings while saving up for BIG innovations while as a partner and supplier make a tonne of cash at the same time.

Still treating their customers like lab rats I see. It says it all when they’re still marketing an improvement to the core feature - the folding - over meaningful additions. Is it any wonder Apple is watching and waiting?

I’d RATHER be this than played a fool which is what Apple has been doing:
iMessge in iCloud 7yrs now and still no proper sync between iMessge and sms across devices.
WatchOS says in iOS for messages “Mirror iPhone” or on iPhone but it STILL does not! Cannot select delete messages fron the list!
Advanced Security Encryption. )&(&:&;!!?: 5hrs una critical time of my life wasted with NO son device prompt for me to send request to help unlock my phone whom was a trusted security contact for this encryption. Apple support told me to power off device which led to the hour count being RESET! I had NO access to SMS/iMessage on my former Mac using same account nor email even on a PC cause iCloud and no prompt even on Mac for 2FA!

Apple pushed me away! Never thought I’d say that! NEVER!

Oh and this idiotic must have AppleTV unit to project iPhone to screen with such LINITED functionality!?

No!

Apple will follow the money. If they see that people want foldables, they will cook something up, stat.
I don’t think so.

It’s the minds of the users that think:

It’s not as good on the others side. Android is crap, less secure, oooh Titanium on iPhones it’ll be just like stainless steel. More importantly is the excuses to accept poor decisions that have no reason other than increase cost.

Titanium as a structural frame over aluminum and stainless steel is a REASON to justify cost.
- how many people hear have titanium jewelry? Fillings in their teeth that can truly feel them?
Anyone FEEL the difference una blind eye random set of tests Va stainless steel or aluminum if the finish is the same!?! Unseen!? Not likely unless you’re extremely allergic.

You save the weight only slightly BUT it I. No way adds strength to the iPhone IF Ana most likely iba. 2nd to 4 th bounce from 3.4ft high or more the phone will fall on its face oe back which is GLASS!! We’ve all seen countless drops over the years, I’m not telling no fibs.

Apples gold is to. I’ll as much from the good horse out there - iPhone. They’re already preparing its new accessory / eventual replacement the AR glass. Which is insanely over priced and they’ve cut the ridiculously overpriced stretch band for the headset 1 wk after public announcement. That shows where their interests lie.

Lets be honest Apple do this aswell
How so? Samsung uses Android and installs its own Apps as duplicates to Android whereas iOS is its own platform and uses its own operating system. I find the core apps in iOS quite useful and don’t need alternative apps to get the job done. Apps like Notes, Calendar, Mail sync with my Mac.

Well, for me, Pages, Numbers, iMovie, Podcasts, garageband, and facetime, are totally useless, just taking up space and never being run by me. (but they somehow are launched anyway) Sounds the same to me. (redundant, useless apps.) I have to delete them on all my apple devices, just like I have to delete redundant useless apps on my Samsung Flip.

I really don't mind it much on either type phone as it's easy to get rid of what I don't want.

This is android's main issue with foldable apps. they simply can 't control the quality like apple can do to apple controlling the hardware and software. Samsung have done so well in trying to get apps to look good in foldable but it comes down to developers and the main problem is different brands producing these foldable so it's hard to optmise for different software and screen sizes.

it's why even with buying these great foldable the iPad mini is still far superior for apps while costing over 1k less.

Yeah, I'm aware, but I don't need an iPad mini in my pocket. Most people don't. A phone is the perfect size for me to be able to accomplish tasks when I'm not around a desktop. I am not interested in having to stuff a brick into my pocket so that a tiny portion of the population can unfold their phone into a ridiculous sized tablet.

>No they aren't taking over the smarthphone world

All you needed to say.

>No, the reason my kindergartner child "got it"

No, the reason your kindergartner child "got it" is because kids are attracted to juvenile, non practical ideas, and to them, bigger is better. Most adults know that isn't the case.

Foldable phones are a solution in search of a problem, and Apple is never going to make you one. So enjoy the stupid hinge, the crease, and the brick you'll have to put in your pocket. Eventually Samsung will stop making them also, and you'll be the guy screaming about his Blackberry, er foldable phone, in 2015.

So again, you are saying because YOU don't want an iPad mini in your pocket no one else does. Oh wait... now it's not "nobody," but has changed to "Most people don't." I'm just happy that the MILLIONS of consumers who do in fact want a tablet in their pocket don't listen to you. Not only has Samsung not stopped making them, why would they when they markedly increase sales every generation, but now we have other big hitters like Google making one and even more oems.

And since we keep going back to my Kindergartner, he's not attracted to anything (I'm kind of unsure what this even means), he simply understands the basic geometry of an iPad mini fitting into my pocket. I actually never said if he liked (or was "attracted?") my Fold 4, simply that he understood the obvious. Lastly, HELL YEAH I'm going to enjoy my stupid hinge, the crease, and the brick in my pocket! Funny you mention about a Blackberry, it's quite obvious you are the luddite here most likely to be screaming against the march of technology.

That's great that your kindergartner understands the basic geometry of an iPad mini fitting into your pocket, but unfortunately he hasn't grasped that in doing so, you've now made the phone thicker, to an annoying degree. He also doesn't seem to understand that the hinge is butt ugly, and that seam/crease is both visible, and you feel it while navigating the screen. I guess there's a reason that kindergartners aren't CEO's and don't ok product launches. Crazy!

It's a valid issue, especially now that Google is pushing landscape mode but Samsung is still portrait mode when opened. I'd hesitate to say that iPads are far superior for apps, but that certainly depends on which app you are talking about. The iPad mini may be less money, but you also have to factor in the cost of a smartphone. At the end of the day both paths have pluses and minuses.

Brick indeed, keep in mind the ZF5 shaved off a couple more mm with it's new hinge design. PS: Again you throw in your personal opinion like it really makes a difference to the MILLIONS buying these and solving their problem of wanting a tablet sized screen that fits into their pocket.

Edit: Included a ZF5 open, couldn't find a closed one. Open you really see how thin it is with such a huge screen. And that's the ZF5 which is the thickest of all of them. The Magic V2, for example, is 9.9mm thick closed which is only a few mm more than the 14 pro max.

Edit 2: Added a side by side 14 pro max and ZFold 5, looking pretty svelte. Now stack an iPad mini onto the 14 pro max and let's see how the size and weight difference pans out as well as the portability. Note also the Fold 5 is only 0.45 oz heavier (or 9.89 oz lighter than a 14 pro max and iPad mini 6).

I'm sorry that you're having trouble grasping why this isn't the hit you think it is. I guess you could consult with your kindergartner?

build quailty seems fine but software they are behind samsung for sure. I think samsung's software is what keeps them ahead of the comp.

That’s because I’ve been using an iPhone since the 3GS and currently in iPhone 12 miii after my 13 mini has been stolen.

It’s VERY objective. Try apples advance encryption add a person on iOS and enter the wrong password a few times. Then see there is NO prompt to your approved iOS contact nor for you to prompt them!

Then reboot and watch that timer get reset! Try out my complaints before calling them non objective!

It was rightfully paced sorry you dislike it. Automatically ignoring vs considering - I guess ignorance is bliss

Anyone get the exclusive blue colour from the Samsung website? Looking forward to seeing the matt black and also the blue colour in the flesh.
