It’s not even a competition. miniLED is a way to try and bring some of OLED’s benefits to LCD, and in apple’s implementation there’s not even any zone-dimming or extra brightness with SDR content vs their non-XDR lcds. OLED is far superior and will always be, we’re just years away from medium sized OLED panels so miniLED is here to give us some HDR pop until then.
Before OLED ever takes off that way in medium panels, MicroLED will be here. And yes, it is far superior to OLED and cheaper to produce.

Samsung: “Apple, please buy our stuff.”
Apple: “show us what you can do”
Samsung: released Galaxy S21 ultra. “Here’s the demo unit you asked for.”
Apple: “nice, we’ll have all your inventory and you will be our only supplier.”

Exactly 5 seconds after they experience 120hz. Some people are never satisfied.
And that’s how we get progress. 240Hz is noticeably better than 120Hz, if you know what to look for. But each successive doubling is less important.

Ah? Scratching head.. More evidence that Apple is behind. We've had this for a while now on the Android side :D

Certainly, that's how they get your money. Offer a new feature as "Pro" feature for a generation or two, to entice people to pay more. And then make it standard across all models later.

Personally, I'm not the type who cares that much about 120Hz, it doesn't make a difference to the user experience for me. So it's really a "Pro" feature in that Pros are the only ones that care about it, but having Always On could be interesting.

These days.....Pro is the most abuse term in Appleland. It just means "top of the line" and if you approach Apple's offerings with that in mind, there is no confusion about why it's called "Pro"
When I switched from S20 to iPhone 12, 120hz display is the one thing I miss the most.

its an iOS problem more than anything. as someone who spent the couple phones in Android and switched back to iOS. most of the weird stupidity you run into with iPhones, lack of featuresets and capabilities is almost always either something thats an oversight in iOS or purely legacy from the old days and Apple's hubris won't seem to let them address it.

there's absolutely no reason why iOS can't detect the model of the phone and enable in the settings "always on" displays for AMOLED based devices. which in iPhone 12 is ALL of them (except the SE).

Just another example of Apple for some reason just being stupid late at bring about features.

iOS needs a massive MASSIVE Overhaul to fix legacy **** that just doesn't work well anymore, or wasn't really thought out well. The Notifications, notifications handling, and alert system is still roughly "feature phonesque" from the mid 10's.

Mini LED will be proven to last considerably longer over OLED, but the one advantage OLED has, HDR is on another level. I think for the average consumer, it probably doesn’t matter to them, but I’d personally choose mini LED.

Okay, but what about people with sensitive eyes and the frequency of PWM flicker in the upcoming iPhones?
As a reference to some smartphones with Samsung LTPO panels, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has PWM of 250Hz at <99% brightness, Oneplus 9 Pro has low frequency at 192.3 Hz. It appears that the Oppo Find X3 has PWM of 362.3Hz at <16% brightness according to notebookcheck, this gives me slight hope, but does Apple recognize this issue and do they care?

120Hz OLED vs XDR MiniLED, who will win?

my hope would be the XDR as it also has the 120hz functionality. personally think that OLED is awesome on the iphone, but i wont necessarily miss it a ton if it disappeared.

OLED is pretty critical in a TV (to me), however, as the ability to produce true blacks in an image is much more important on that platform.

LG's OLED's are just an absolute dream to enjoy content on, especially with an apple tv & dolby vision enabled for content that supports it.

The 120Hz iPhone screen is not enough to get me to upgrade from my already stellar 12 Pro Max. Part of it is the fact that I'm upgrading my iPad Pro 12.9" 2018 to the 2021 M1 XDR version, which will be my daily work and play device, providing what I think will be a big jump in screen quality for what is still a fantastic screen.

But it's also just not something I look at my iPhone now and think, "what I'm really missing for phone calls, emails, Twitter doom-scrolling and web browsing is a high refresh rate screen". Always-on can have some benefits, but I've already got an Apple Watch for quick notification viewing, so even here it's just not a must-have feature for me.

Not with ltpo displays Panels. Which is what is needed for better battery life.

apple didn’t want to add 120hz without LTPO due to the issue with battery life. Same goes for AOD. Many will disagree but thats apple’s standards. Not like they didn’t try to add it in 2020 but battery life just wasn’t good enough with 5G.

We are more likely to see the next iphone require a dongle to attach a separately purchased screen to work, before this comes out. They just spent the money on new screen sizes they aren't changing much on the screen for another 2 years.

I hope so much that Apple will increase the PWM frequency so that it will be useable for me. Because of pwm i’m not more so positive about Samsung Display like in the past.

Welcome to the party, we'll already be moving to bigger and better parties so enjoy your stay. 😅
What party? The only Android phone with this tech is the S21 Ultra (and maybe the OnePlus 9 Pro?). The rest are using older inefficient tech (eg non variable refresh rates), LTPS OLED, or LCD. There’s no party. The tech is brand new.

Looks like 2021 is finally going to be the year for 120Hz!

Yeah but unfortunately the last real high-end small fit in your hand iPhone … the 13 mini will not get this :(

If it wasn’t for Google’s Android, that 13 Pro would have a really hard time (by hardware design) in my eyes to compete with the Sony Xperia 1 iii just announced and will ship mid summer. Sony does have AOSP which drops Google’s services and app (except G-Play - I think). Need to do more research but man that phone is SUPER tall.

Meh …. 13 mini or 13 Pro it’ll be … or maybe for the first time ever it may just be both for me. Son will get the 12 Pro.

Basically, 120hz is something I don’t really care about, but would like at the same time. I think always on is a bit more practical than 120hz.
