switched to iPhone 12 this year back from years on Android

Even with the 12 being purely AMOLED based on all models it's baffling that there's no Always On Display yet.

With no notification LED and no always on display, iOS is severely lacking in this functionality. Feels very "smartphone" from 2011ish in regards to notifications and alerting you.

I can only say that while I love the iPhone 12 hardware and most of the time iOS is fine. It's really REALLY not nearly as feature rich or usable as Android's latest versions and needs a tremendous amount of work
.

IMHO, before Apple starts trying to go down the trend of 120hz screens or other things that are going to be less overall noticable to the users. They fix some of the things they've let languish
Funny you mentioned notification LED. I only know of two Android smartphones that have that and one is a dead fruit company that’s being relicensed a second time later this year. The other is Sony.

notification LED's are really something that aren't needed anymore with always on displays. if you're not going to have an LED but have a OLED based display? why not just make a few pixels act as such?

so many options to expand features that just go.. ignored by iOS

Couldn't agree more.

To me the iPhones feel like they're 10 years behind.

I would like to see Apple:

1. redesign the notification center. It's ridiculous.

2. give us an LED visual if there are notifications waiting and allow us the change the colors of the LED based on what the notification app is.
The fine folks who like things the way they are can just turn this off and be constantly hitting the screen on their phones to see if there are any messages when the phone is on mute, much like we all do all day long with the current system.

3. give us an always on screen for the clock. On the always on screen we should also be able to choose if we want to see if we have any notifications (the amount and the app) or if we to just want see the clock.

4. add haptic feedback to the keyboard, and make it possible to customize different intensities to your heart's content. It's crazy that you have no feedback whatsoever if you're typing and the phone is on mute. Those who are concerned with battery can just turn it off.

5. make it possible to adjust volume for independent apps and settings and not this general thing they're doing. Separate volume control for keyboard volume, music volume, ring volume, system volume. For example, I would like the keyboard clicks to be much louder than they are but without it affecting the volume on the whole phone or the ring and notifications volume. It's silly of Apple to force it to be like this.

6. add suggestions from the address book as you start a phone number.
Common now Apple, this has been available for the last 15 years on Android.

7. make it possible to customize the texting app in every conceivable way. Font size, bubble size shape color etc.

8. also in the messages; make it possible to schedule a message to be sent at a certain time/date.

9. make it possible to move the icons on the desktop anywhere you want to.

10. use an OS-wide clipboard and make cut and/or copy not expire until you, the user, cleans it. You should be able to copy text now and paste it tomorrow if you want to. And with multiple copy entries ready by long pressing, at least the last 10 cut/copies should be in memory.

11. in Mail give us the option to NOT go to the next email when you are deleting an email but to go back to the inbox.

When I switched from S20 to iPhone 12, 120hz display is the one thing I miss the most.
I have a iPad Pro 2020 and it has a 120Hz display, and it doesn't make any difference to me compared to my XS Max. If I had to choose between more battery life and faster refresh, I'd choose battery life. I would actually like it if they gave me that option as a setting.

Turn your phone upside down ... then your theory of no need for LEDs goes down the drain. I have always faced my phone screen down on the table when in public or especially in the office working - privacy (even though I disable previews of notifications, I just like being private - so no force of habit).

That said sounds/custom vibrations works as well.

What's funny is when around the same people, they can figure out by your reaction or action what sound or notification is over time. An LED ... I don't think evokes the same physical reaction in people (e.g. that hot date messaged you for round 2, micro-managing boss email/sms/etc, you catch my drift).

I'm VERY curious with microLED how Apple will implement always onscreen notifications

you should have a screen protector if you do this and it's generally not recommended for glass screened phones. micro abrasions from the surface of your desk are the leading cause of screen damage and scratches.

But at the same veign. this is your user anecdotal experience. the whole world of phone users don't do this. it's not the "norm" as it is in fact, recommended against by phone manufacturers due to above screen damage.

Any decent case that I've owned doesn't let the screen touch the table because it has just enough of a lip. I've even dropped my phone, it hit my foot and slid across the shopping mall floor without damage to the screen.

I do miss some kind of indictor to show urgent notifications from my BlackBerry days but now the Apple watch is a better replacement if you need to be notified of urgent things.

So.....Samsung OLED across the Pro's means low PWM rates once again. Samsung's flagship for 2021 is the S21 Ultra and that has fluctuating 120-250hz PWM with a LTPO display. This is what they will supply Apple (of course Apple will make some spec changes to make it more yellow than butter).

With a no show for an SE Plus and only OLED options on the 12 and 13 series, for PWM sensitive folks it will remain SE 2020 or 11 as the only options with they're sub 1080p displays (no thanks). F my life.

What party? The only Android phone with this tech is the S21 Ultra (and maybe the OnePlus 9 Pro?). The rest are using older inefficient tech (eg non variable refresh rates), LTPS OLED, or LCD. There’s no party. The tech is brand new.
Not true, LTPO started with the Note 20 ultra (first) and improved with S21 ultra.

This is what will bring me to switch from my current Android phone to an iPhone. This alongside the smaller notch will be a very nice change. Also hoping that we get the fingerprint reader under the display too like my current OnePlus 7 Pro. Glad to see that it's likely to be featured in the iPhone 13 Pro & Pro Max. 120Hz makes a huge difference to the end user and anyone who says it doesn't really matter to them should really try an iPad Pro and compare the two.
But Android (specifically - Samsung) phones already have all the features that you listed (and they has some of them for quite a while) so why the switch?

The Note 20 ultra didn’t have the variable refresh rate. So regardless, where’s the party? A party indicated that there were already a slew of Android devices with this tech, while in reality, only Samsung most expensive flagship had it.

Who needs notification led’s when we have the Apple Watch?
Notification LED is generally useless in the age of smartphones where there will always be a notification from some apps all the time. I'd prefer an Alwyas on display like Samsung phones. More functional than a single blinking Led.

To be honest I’ve never seen the point in led. Always on display is great for those who don’t want a watch or keep checking it

Because If you prefer iOS then If it gets android features it makes sense to switch back

I've been an Android user for several years now, and I've been tempted to switch back to iOS for a while now. I like the direction Apple is going in terms of its privacy enforcement and Apple notably have incredible software support for older devices. I quite like how iOS is taking shape now that it has widgets, etc. Not only that, but I already have an iPad Pro, so I might as well go further into the ecosystem so all of my devices work a lot better together. If I do buy the iPhone 13 (or 12s), I'll probably get an Apple Watch and AirPods as well.

I just upgraded one of the lines on my account with the Samsung galaxy S21+, that phone has the 120Hz screen, but comparing that phone with my iPhone 12pm and i really don’t see much of a difference with the higher refresh rate…

Did you turn on the adaptive refresh rate in the settings?

At first no i turned it to the 120Hz refresh rate because I’ve been hearing over and over how much better it was/is, but no i didn’t see much of a difference so i just gave the phone to the daughter and let her have fun with her new phone,
but I really didn’t see much of a difference and on the smaller screens I don’t think there’s that much of a benefit, another thing that i found annoying was the hole punch for the front facing camera, on several websites that I was looking at that hole punch was right in the middle of some words so making some of the words hard to read, the notch is less annoying and I would still rather see a macro mode instead of the 120Hz screens…
