Did he CC that email to every buyer?

No he didn't. And funny enough - that email WAS to me as documented on MR when I sent it over to Arn.

The "argument" is simple. Apple wasn't transparent. Other companies are.

So don't "cry" when Apple gets called to the mat or gets caught by the press with their pants down vs the "other guy" who is getting away scott free.

Because the other company/companies WERE transparent.

Even after this PR debacle (and it's really more a PR debacle than anything else) Apple STILL hasn't put anything in their manual.

And Steve's appearance (not just my professional opinion, but several others) at the Press Conference indicated that while he might have been genuine about caring for customers - resented having to explain himself, how his company operates and anyone who dare question the design of the iPhone.

Agreed.

If you think putting a picture in the manual excuses one company but a widly publicized email from the CEO doesn't... I'll just have to disagree with you on that one.

Personally, I liked the press conference. I can see why he'd be ticked off he had to explain to people a "problem" that other phones also face. The demo with other phones was great as were the stats from ATT.

Luckily there is a very generours return policy. So hurry up people who aren't happy and feel like they were duped. You only have a few more days to get a refund.

It doesn't EXCUSE one company over another. What it does is indicates the difference between accountability and not. That coupled with Apple's "non issue" response pissed a lot of people off because it IS an issue. Doesn't matter if it's with all phones. Apple wanted to say it didn't. Or IMPLY that there was no issue.

As for the latter part of your comment. I know this might be hard for you to accept - but not everyone who has a complaint about how this was handled or who experiences a drop/loss in signal is going to return their phone. And there are a lot of reasons why. Maybe they are heavily invested in Apps and don't want to lose their investment. Or maybe all the benefits of the iPhone outweigh the negatives. But that doesn't mean these people can't discuss something they own and whether or not this feature of that feature works better or not.

The whole return it or shut up mentality is immature. It's also ignorant.

Settle down. I'm just saying with all of the talk about his email not being sent to all buyers and people not knowing before they got the phone, they can return the phone and be back at square one if they want. If they feel deceived, they can fix the problem pretty easily by returning the phone. Luckily this came out early enough to where people have that option.

Of course most people won't return the thing. They'd rather just piss and moan about it. That's what most of MF is when new products are launched.

This is more of an issue if you want to bar watch 24/7. But ATT deserves some of that with their "more bars in more places" crap. Apple deserves a LOT of it. IIRC they changed the bar formulas before the recent change to show more. It doesn't seem to be an issue with the phone overall or more would be returned, it wouldn't take weeks to get one, and more calls would be being dropped.

I read some other post where you talked about being in PR. I see where you're coming from now. What I may see as a silly point is something that means much more in your line of work.

But my iPhone 4 dropped just about every call in my living room when not thinking about how I held it. Returned it for a Captivate, and have yet to drop a call on the same exact couch.

I think the real issue is that in an area of low reception, touching that G-spot on the iPhone caused it to actually drop the call. Sure all smartphones drop some signal when you cover the antenna, but not the call completely (at least imho).

Well unless I misread online - there are currently 1 in 100 calls dropped with the 3GS. And the iPhone 4 drops more calls. Jobs didn't dare give a # - but he said less than 1 percent. Which could easily be .95. That means twice as many calls, no?

Thanks for your edit. Yes. My profession does have a lot to do with how I view the entire situation. I don't claim to have any or all the answers. I can only offer my experience and view.

During the press conference he stated that the iPhone 4 drops less than 1 call more per 100 calls than the 3GS did.

Yes. Up to twice the rate. (Now you're getting to my line of work :)).

But from 1% to 2%... I wouldn't care. I don't think it would be a deal breaker to me. Just my $0.02 though. I'd also be interested in how many of those calls wouldn't have even been made with a 3GS.

I'm also not trying to dismiss your profession. I think you caught what I meant with your comment about how you view the situation.

People are definitely influenced in their world view whether it be by friends, personal investment (hey - I wonder how many people crying foul against the press have MORE invested than their products... i.e. own stock), career, etc.

I do my best to look at the big picture but can't deny I'm influenced by my profession. I also happen to think that it's my job to look at the big picture - first without bias and then, of course, the best way to service my client - which right now is the company I work for.

Then it's defective, return it for a new one. Four of us at work got ours together & not one shows a drop in bars.

It wasn't mine, it was the store model. So I just put it back on the shelf. lol

Came close to getting it, nice phone. How are you able to switch between Iphone 4 and Captivate when they use the different size sim?

I have each of my primary smartphones on thier own dedicated lines. My iPhone 4 & Galaxy S (Captivate) are on their own dedicated lines with AT&T. My Droid X on it's own line with Verizon.

Noticed the same thing myself today. Haven't had much opportunity to play with Android so I stopped in the local AT&T store to check out the Captivate. Nice form, especially screen size and fairly slim. I don't know how different the Samsung UI over the top of Android is as I've never used the native OS but wasn't overly impressed. Didn't particularly like weight and materials--too light and too much plastic--been spoiled with iPhone 4. What I did notice though was how quickly it dropped signal when grasping the lower part of the phone. It went from nearly full 3G bars to half bars on EDGE in about 2-3 seconds--was able to repeat the effect half dozen times in a row.

Genuinely curious, what is the widespread issue? GPS?

Yes, it is the GPS. It works, but it takes FOREVER (like 3-5 minutes) to read your current location. Both the Vibrant (Tmobile version) and the Captivate (AT&T version) show the same behavior.

There is a temporary 'fix' by accessing a secret settings menu, but it seems to causes some phones to lag in another area.

Actually that's totally incorrect, it's not defective, it's the Captivate. After using the phone, seeing videos on YouTube and checking out various Android forums, the reception on this phone is less than stellar and it drops bars faster than the iPhone 4 when being held in the "wrong" spot.

Just an FYI from Physorg

http://www.physorg.com/news199043083.html

Shows that they do suffer from death grip, but for the most part, especially the vibrant form factor do not suffer any data errors.

Hint: Watch the video's .
They illustrate apple's problem is inherent in design and not due to dbm drop, as the vid shows, attenna covered shows it still works, but when the magic spot is touched, its done. Actually looks like it suffers almost no signal loss with attenna cover, so bumpers it seems will alleviate the problem, but apple is definitely misrepresenting the problem by blanketing it under the guise of attenuation.

In real world use, my Captivate doesn't suffer nor display signal loss. That's all that matters is functionality. Notice, I am NOT declaring it a better phone than my iPhone 4... It's a _different_ phone which is also excellent. I use them both daily & find Android a nice alternative.
