It's really simple, Apple is a public company and a retail seller. As such it is obliged to report sales. Samsung is not a retail seller, they do not have to report "sales" and they do not have any sales per se. All they do they ship their products to retailers. And they do report shipments (like 30 milllion shipped SGSIII that they reported a few day ago).

I don't believe Apple has to report units sold according to SEC rules. They just need to report earnings and profit and debt and assets. They don't have to break it down for you. They don't break down which Macs were sold or which iPods were sold and now they don't break down which iPads were sold. I'm pretty sure I have never seen Best Buy report in their financials how many units of Sony televisions they sold. I think you made this up, but if I am wrong please provide a link pointing to the relevant SEC regulation.

I've had everything from the first Google phone, to ICS, to Jelly Bean on a Nexus 7, which was the best Android device I ever had. But it's still ugly, kludgy fragmented Android.

Sure... And I had all iPhone and iPads...

I would like to help Apple numbers ...

Well, I would like to help Apple numbers and buy an iPhone 5 ...

But they simply won't let me  ZERO physical stock in Portugal and 3-4 weeks availability in the online store (and i got no guarantee on that timeframe also) ...

Since my 3GS is dying really fast, when i browse the shops I've actually found myself looking and touching the S3 and NoteII (crazy i know)

Seriously Apple, i want to buy an iPhone 5 ... you just won't let me ... :(

Where are these people with all these Samsung Galaxy IIIs?

I honestly haven't seen 2 people with a Galaxy of any kind. EVERYBODY has an iPhone.

Many of them live in countries where wireless providers do not subsidies the phones. This makes iPhone absolutely non-competitive because Apple charges too much. In USA, iPhones get higher subsidies than Android phones (which probably won't last long since iPhone is not the most popular smart phone anymore).

Well, I've read this on this very forum. I do not really have a first hand knowledge about this. Whatever the case, it does not change much. The distinction between Apple (retailer) and Samsung (manufacturer) still stands. Samsung could not disclose their sales even if they wanted to.

You are giving a **** since you replied and also defended yourself.

Just answered a question, that's all.

I see them all the time. They're on lame commercials on television, and on signs all over the city begging me to come up to them and touch my (non-existent) phone to theirs...

The misconception that both camps have here on MacRumors is that you believe that you are the "average consumer", read: majority of sales.

Regardless of what one device can or can not do; can your Mom make it do the same thing without your help? More importantly; do they need it to do that?

Mom lets me make my own calls now

In other news today, more Fords and Chevys were sold last year than BMWs!

In another news, BMWs are not made in China by underpaid labors.

So please, stop associating Apple with real premium brands because it's simply not.

This JOKE is getting old .. And innacurate too.

It's a shiny mass produced, made-in-China piece of electronic.

Do you know of the HP Touchpad? Might want to look that one up and how many they 'shipped' vs 'sold'

You obviously have NO CLUE on how retail works or you wouldn't have made that ridiculous statement.

For short term determining sales by shipped quantities Is not accurate. However, I would expect longer term figures(mor than. 3 months) to be fairly equal. Therefore if Samsung is shipping but stores are not selling at some point shipments will drop. This has not been the case with the SIII

While I'll agree with you that the Android ecosystem is rough and not very intuitive at all, Samsung has conquered all performance issues. IMO Android's biggest problem has always been RAM usage and how the frequent memory deficits affected a device's performance. Samsung's latest devices have blazing fast quad core processors and 2 gigs of RAM. Having plenty of memory available keeps the new Galaxy lines running smooth and FAST. I've had the iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, and (currently) the 4S and I can tell you that my Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet runs as smoothly as any iDevice I've ever had. I'm so impressed with it that I'm buying the Note 2 (as soon as it's available in the US) instead of an iPhone 5.

I got Note 2 a week ago, stop using iPhone 5 since then. There are lots good apps in Google Play than last year, some are quite impressive. Overall, Apple app store has more quality apps.

right because retailers seem to love stockpiling units of unsold S3 on their shelves.

it's probably a strange fetish.
ever see the S3 sell out?

Don't hear about a ton of people whining about their case all scratched up though, do ya?
Didn't hear about a ton of people whining that their iPhone 3G didn't get scratched either. That's basically what the case on the S3 is like.

You sound very insecure.

not really, im pleased at the fact that there is actually a strong competitor to Apple now,it will get Apple innovating again( i will admit, they haven't been innovating as much as they have in the past) but Fandroids claiming ownage about a top of the line Android phone over a phone that has been released over a year ago is just sad.

If she threw it in your face then she has no respect for you. But then again, your whole story is probably made up.

haha, MOST PROBABLY YES))))
Actually S3 IS really good Android phone, I got Sony Experia U for work, and that was really good than I expected, but Im sure S3 is way better than U.
It is sad when this kind of pointless people, tying to represent Apple users

seriously, go to a major retailer like Verizon, ATT, Sprint etc and go play with a Android phone then go play with a iPhone after... every Android phone i had played with in the stores were incredibly laggy swiping from side to side and doing basic functions. Now you may say "well yeah everyone likes to open up apps and play with the phone and not close out things"...and go play with a iPhone in the store, it is still buttery smooth even with many apps open in the background... but it just goes to show that iOS still is much more tailored to its hardware then Android is

I will admit though Android is hot on Apple's heels and they defitnetly are catching up

i have seen a few people with Galaxy s3's but only a very few to be honest.

It can vary widely. I commute every day on the subway into downtown Toronto and in terms of phone popularity I see it goes: iPhone 4(s) --> SIII --> iPhone 5. Seriously, I see more SIIIs than the 5.

well gee gosh darn lets see why that may be the case.. a phone being out for months compared to a BRAND NEW phone that is having some production issues that will clear up really soon... hmm gee

Where are these "fandroids" that you're claiming of? Samsung's sales, irregardless of Apple's, are very impressive especially considering the large number of Android phones.

I am going to go out here on a limb and say that the GS3 is a very good phone, I know this because I came from one. Feels pretty good in the hand, screen is very nice (although a little too big for me pause) and its a fast phone.

With that being said, it is not as much as a complete phone as iPhone is, Android system is not as complete as iOS is. I can tell you that... I have had to pull out my battery 6-7 times in a span of 2 months because the screen would randomly go black and nothing would work even though the LED's are on. The message app would crash maybe 2-3 times a week on me (wtf?) and a few others. I think one of the reasons why so many people like Apple phones is because they just work and not to mention they are the best looking smartphones by far. Seriously nothing touches the sleek black iPhone 5, that **** just shines in the light

you may be wondering, "what the hell do I care about how the phone looks does it function good and are the features there?" well yes the features of iOS can basically go toe to toe with Android besides a few things, Android doesnt have a big lead on that. But i would say the look and feel of the phone is probably about 50-75% of how much i would like the phone and if i would buy it and for many others this aspect is in play for them.

there is a few here on these forums but Engadget and other websites are leaking with Fandroid comments bleeding with ignorance. Also my cousin is blindly spewing nonsense out his mouth about this piece of "news"

I've been an Apple user for a long time now but I'm not really happy with what Apple has become as a company. I went to the store today to look at the SIII and was very impressed. I was all set to upgrade to one from my Iphone 4 but was also quite impressed by the Note 2 that's coming out Sunday, at Best Buy at least.

It has amazing internals including a quad core processor. The screen is huge at 5.5". A lot of people won't like this. I thought I wouldn't but I was able to hold one and put it in my pocket and it fits perfect. Plus it's thinner compared to an Iphone and it's noticeable. I'll also be getting a Nexus 10 on Tuesday.

iPhone 4S is a big strategic mistake.

iPhone 5 is great, but not enough to heal the wound.
