I want to say the HTC One, but a better camera and expandable memory trumps build quality I think.

S4 for me.

When you compare the two side by side, it really shows how bland and cheap looking (never mind the feel, for now, as none of us has held it) the S4 is compared to the HTC One. I'm really disappointed Samsung didn't take advantage of this huge opportunity to up their game and distance itself from the competition. I really get the sense that Samsung did not expect HTC to come out with such a strong showing.

I feel the GS4 is the better phone, but at the same time, I feel like I'm letting Samsung get away with something (complacency, maybe? Laziness? Underestimating their competition? I don't know...) if I choose them. Too bad HTC made some stupid moves themselves, and have a poor history, making them a potentially high-risk choice.

Has it been confirmed whether that "metal" edge on the S4 is real metal or more fake plastic faux-metal paint garbage that Samsung always uses?

Strangely when I showed these pictures to my wife and her sister, both of them prefer the s4 design more. They said the One design is too cold and look industrious.

edit..
just read the gsmarena review. I think the reviewer is blind when he said the screen size difference is barely noticeable. s4 screen looks so much bigger in the picture

I don't think the s4 looks particularly cheap, just because it's plastic. If it's anything like the s3 it'll be pretty solid, and less likely to scratch or scuff.
Not really sure what this obsession with metal is to be honest.

My two biggest issues with the S4 design are the camera (the way it protrudes from the back....) and all the sensors on the front.....

It simply doesn't look high quality IMO - and I understand this is an opinion.

LCD > AMOLED too, also my opinion.

Your wife and sister will clearly never work for a design firm. These two devices are not even close in terms of their design.

Why do you guys always forget about the Sony Xperia Z? It's right up there with the GS4 and the HTC One.

Records video with HDR, has a 5" FullHD screen, 13MP camera, the Bravia Engine, but most of all isn't made of plastic, but of glass fiber polyamide and glass panels. And it's waterproof.

removable battery and expandable memory cards are reason enough for me to avoid HTC. also newer HTCs are a pain to root. crap s-off/s-on. HTC is pretty but less functional than S4.

Because Sony's software and Android skin are both garbage. While I do like the design, I find it to be too boxy and glass on both sides make it fragile and a fingerprint magnet. I don't see a single benefit of the Sony Z over the HTC One.

So you replace the stock shatterproof screen protector with a SGP Spigen GLAS.t slim, which has an oleophobic coating?

To tell you the truth, I am a bit surprised by the poll numbers....

70 to 45 in favor of the HTC One...even though this is a Mac-centric site and most of us will prefer something closer to Apple's design aesthetic, I still figured the GS4 would dominate even a poll like this.

Hopefully the HTC One is given the same type of chance in real world purchasing. If it fails after having got its chance, so be it - but a phone that pretty and well designed should at least get a shot to disrupt the Android market.

My Android dollars will likely be going toward the HTC One this year, depending on what Google pulls out with the Phone X project. I have an upgrade coming so the Nexus 5 isn't in the running due to its off-contract pricing.

I wanted the GS4 to wow me....maybe it was the awful keynote, maybe I just inexplicably hate Samsung - but I can't get myself to commit to it at all. Every time I think I'm leaning toward it, I see the One and it pulls me back.

Or you simply buy the better looking device with the nicer industrial design and the better Android overlay...the HTC One.

I was looking forward to this, but Sony software is garbage and all reviews have said poor battery life and washed out display. Not to mention, Z isn't coming to the US with AT&T LTE, they're willing to sell us the ZL for $760, which is ridiculous.

Feel the same way. Very excited about the XZ, but the modest reviews turned me off.

HTC says before end of April, which sounds to me like it'll be more end-ish of April.

Tmobile event says around May 1st for Galaxy S4 release (on Tmobile anyway). The others cannot be far from that date.

There are your two release dates. Awfully close.

They don't follow tech stuff. but maybe One will have better appeal for tech geek than the female population.

I guess some people prefer the softer edges of the s4.
