Is that UK good manners you're observing, or your personal good manners? Where I live in the US, east coast mid-Atlantic region, everyone seems to always have their smart phones out and checking them, whether at meetings or dinner or social events. I don't see people doing that as much down south, so even in the US smart phone etiquette might vary by region. West coast manners seemed the same as my area, but I'm never there long enough to be certain.
.

It's the same on the west coast and New England.

We live and die by our phones and we're constantly checking them.

When I lived overseas people did not leave their phones on the table at a restaurant. I personally find that incredibly distracting and rude.

They did a study where they found out that just having a phone sitting on the table degrades the quality of conversation between 2 people.

I find it can be okay if we are all sharing in a discussion about what one person may be looking at on their phone. But I have to agree, on the whole it's a nuisance.

I've found Lightflow perfect for led notifications. Different colors, blink rate, intensity for different apps or contacts or phone behaviour. I can leave my phone face up and tell by the led if a family member called me, texted me or if it was from people outside family circle. If it's a mail, or reminder, a specific contact or a group (work, team mates, friends).
Of course you can't rely on this for all applications and notifications at the same time. If you need this, than you're a slave to your phone and really need to get a life.
But this united with Marshmallow "Do not disturb" settings comes very handy. I've always thought Apple should improve something like this, but to each his own

Trust me, I've considered the alternatives and still don't think it's the end of the world to have to press the home button.

Lol, neither does ANYONE else!!!!!

You are just being ridiculous & trying to create a straw man...

For example: nobody thinks it's the "end of the world" to press the home button to read notifications, HOWEVER, it is pretty cool that Apple is giving us "raise to wake", to make it even easier.

If you can wrap your head around why that is cool.... good job! Use that same line of thought to realize this would be cool as well.
