Don't try comparing Samsung marketing with Apple's one. There are huge differences in what and how the two companies operate. For example, Samsung does not do retail, Apple does. What Apple spends on retail is not counted as "marketing". Samsung on the other hand spends money on various promotional campaigns with retailers (displays etc.). Next, Samsung sells a lot of stuff to other businesses (RAM, SSDs, LCDs etc.). These things require marketing too. As far as comparable items are concerned (advertisement spending on mobile devices for example) they appear to be comparable. Samsung is just doing some catch up (having been outspent by Apple enormously in previous years). We all thought that iPhones were selling that well because they were great. It appears advertisement had something to do with it. As soon as Samsung started spending as much as Apple, they caught up with Apple in sales easily.
