No doubt. When Samsung earnings are booming, it's a sign that they are beating the pants off Apple, so Apple must be in trouble. When Samsung misses earnings, it's a sign that the whole industry is in trouble and Apple must also be in trouble because they're in that industry.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Everyone always says that Apple will always be hit the hardest because it's products are the most expensive. However, Apple can sell far less products and still make money because Apple focuses on profits and not just market share. Samsung went all out last year to break Apple's back but apparently the costs are not sustainable for Samsung over multiple quarters. After the high-end Galaxy S4 sales came up short last year, all that costly marketing didn't pay off and the company still had to suck up the costs of all those low-end, low-margin models they sell to the cheapskates. Samsung is going to have a difficult time selling the Galaxy S5 in large numbers because the S4 already had more features than most consumers needed.

This is the price of making 50 different devices in every segment.

Make the galaxy SX, galaxy note-x, and a galaxy Mini.

That's it. Way more efficient, less confusion, less waste

The problem with Samsung is they're doing what Sony did from 2000-2010. Make too many products that did the exact same thing too soon... how many Galaxy tablets did they release? How many of each size? They cannibalize their own products by offering too many similar choices. What they need to do is streamline their product line like Sony has done in the last 2 years and focus on making a really good product in 2 or 3 tiers, not 10 versions of the same damn thing.

This is why Apple does so well, streamlined so the consumer isn't confused and they don't make their products looks like cheap bargain bin products.

Maybe one Samsung will learn.

"My friends did not buy one of Apple's new phones so therefore Apple will miss its earnings estimates."

Except he is forgetting Apple increased their estimates mid quarter, which you never do if you aren't going to meet them and apple never is one to put up lofty estimates. They are going to kill it this quarter

Apple MUST make a big ass phone the size of the face, or Apple is DOOMED!

Must be why Verizon didn't account iPhone sales number this quarter. Probably would embarrassed the hell out of Samsung.

Samsung has their flagship phone at the end of its product cycle entering a huge holiday quarter, and Apple has its entire products refreshed right in front of the holiday quarter, with the iPhone 5S getting great reviews.

Yeah, I'd say Samsung had some competition.

They haven't innovated in some time, either. That's the nature of the cell phone industry at this point.

If that was true, Apple would have the same problem, as would everyone else.

Apple is on top because it's cool, they haven't had true innovation in the iPhone in a few years.

And please don't tell me that putting a 64-bit processor in is "innovation", it isn't, it's iteration. It's a decades old technology that finally became feasible for the size of a phone.

----------

When did they innovate anything more than a gimmick or a half baked product just to say they were first?

Selective memory... Apple NEVER does that. Ever.

It looks like that monstrous marketing push has started to show more cost in the cost/benefit analysis. Looking back, they probably would have done the same thing. Hell I would have. Look at the results.

It's going to be an interesting 2014 if Apple produces a 4.5-5" phone. Android has gotten the spend on my last 3 phones and Samsung got the spend on the last 2 of the 3. I'd love to put an iPhone in the decision mix if the size is right.

iP6, S5, or a snappy new WinPhone. Hmmmm, the choices.

Samsung is going to have to start taking less risk and consolidate that product mix; concentrating more on profitable lines.

I'm a happy Galaxy 3 owner. I'll definitely make the switch back if the Apple phablet is true. Back on track however, I see a lot of GS4, and Note 3's in the wild.

I made the switch from the Note 2, to the iPhone 5s to the Note 3. I actually did not mind the small screen of the 5s. It was ios that drove me back to Android. And using iTunes to manage content drove me crazy. I just want to plug my device in and drag and drop. Anybody that claims that iTunes is better needs their head checked. Plus iTunes (along with many other programs) is black listed at my job.
I thought a larger screen would make me change my mind but once you use 2 totally different ecosystems you notice the pro's and con's. Not saying that Android is perfect but it's better suited for what I want to do with a smart phone.
And I doubt Apple will release anything bigger than 5" anytime soon. It will eat away at iPad mini sales. Just look at the price of the retina mini. Everything that Apple does has a reason.

Is these earnings included Apple to let Samsung manufacture their chips?

If it is. Cant wait for Apple to 100% ditch Samsung for manufacturing their chips.

How about an iPad Mini with a phone built in?

Selective memory... Apple NEVER does that. Ever.

By your definition, there isn't any innovation in the industry.

Apple makes bank on steady evolution of a few flagship products, while all the so called "innovators" save Samsung starve, and now Samsung finds itself at the crossroads of marketshare or profit in a maturing market. Looks like peak Samsung.

The secret sauce of Apple is materials science and manufacturing technology, but of course, that invisible "innovation" isn't sexy like some grande 8 core big/little processor, or a 1080p screen resolution.

It appears that their massive marketing blitz was unsustainable. Plus with pretty much every Android OEM putting out flagships that are as good as or better than Samsung's S4, I think they're only going to down from here on out unless they do something with the S5 that sparks some renewed interest. Not to mention the cheap Chinese Android devices that they're losing share to. Such is the problem with trying to compete on the low end. They're just trying to do too much and compete in too many different segments.

Things could get even worse if Apple does indeed release large screen iPhones this fall and removes that angle from Samsung's portfolio.

I didn't call anyone else innovators, and I didn't call Samsung an innovator.

Apple innovated with the UI of iOS, they innovated with multi-touch and gesture.

Putting in a higher resolution screen is not innovating, sorry, that's technology progressing to a point where that pixel density is economically viable. Apple was smart enough to put the money in and get there first.

The secret sauce of Apple is not what you said, it's making something shiny and easy to use and marketing it so that people think it's cool. I don't have an iPhone because it is more "innovative", I have an iPhone because the hardware for my android phones was crap. I liked the software infinitely better. It was easier to use, easier to change, and curated in a logical and open way.

Apple's product is not flat out superior, it has it's advantages but the best thing selling the iPhone is Apple's marketing and the IDEA that it is better.
