I think Samsungs shoddy quality is starting to hurt them. Just Google: "Galaxy S4 screen brakes by itself". A serious issue that was ignored by the press (because it's not Apple). Samsung completely refused to take any responsibility and their service blamed the customers and charged money for "repair". Not even a billion dollars can offset the negative word of mouth from a few thousand disgruntled customers.

Then there was region lock, which was actually reported by the press but very wrongly (claiming you can use your Galaxy only in your "home region".

People are finally getting a clue about Samsung.
Samsung's product build quality is less than ideal. However, when you put a plastic case on an iPhone, does it really matter?

Lets dissect this one.

Yes, Apple did innovate. TouchID and the 64-bit processor is great and all. Honestly, most people don't use a password, and I have no problem inputting one.

Android is powerful. My one (or two?) year old Nexus 4 matches the speed of the iPhone 5S. The Nexus 5 beats the 5S in speed on almost every test (almost).

Apple is doing very well. I have an iPad and Nexus 4, and I can tell you that neither experience is better than the other if you know how to tweak it to how you like.

Note: I don't like TouchWiz or Samsung.

What are you smoking? I want some

And Nexus 5, with like double the number of cores, clock speed, memory and battery capacity, only barely matched the 5S.

It's like having a car that has 500 hp barely keeping up with one that has 250 hp... Shame....

I'm a happy Galaxy Note 3 owner. I'll definitely make the switch back if the Apple phablet is true. Back on track however, I see a lot of GS4, and Note 3's in the wild.

Just curious. So the iPad mini is too big for your needs? Do you hold your phablet up to your ear to make phone calls?

every time i see a comparison of the Galaxy S4 screen, i always think "Its larger than 5-inches."

Compared to the 5, it looks like a monster screen ? No way that is "only an inch"

I may know that, but my brain doesn't. The lack of a ticker bezel must do it.

Yes, to achieve that near-equal performance, they doubled the specs. If you call that impressive, yay for you! :p
True, although I'd rather hold onto a phone with hardware that I suppose seems more future proof (quad core, 2gb of ram). The day Apple gets quad-core and 2Gb of RAM in their devices will be incredible! I might switch back. Until then, its the Nexus phones for me.

If anyone thinks an Android phone that comes out the same time as an iPhone is more future proof they are mad.

The only thing "specs" are going to future proof for is if the OS takes better advantage of it. Unfortunately few Android phones ( even Google's ) get more than 18 months of support/updates. Apple is easily giving 4+ years of upgrades and that may become longer as devices become more powerful and can easily handle newer updates that may be more demanding.

Secondly that video is not realistic to real world usage at all. Most apps are never "cold" launched. Most are started from suspended state in which everything is good to go. Both the Nexus 5 and the iPhone 5S will handle this buttery smooth. I truly doubt on any "standard" things anyone will perceive any difference between the two devices.

Where it starts to become extremely obvious is any sort of intense processing, specifically video and audio. The Nexus 5 still trails the iPhone 5S in a big way. Video on a 64-bit process can't be matched hands down and the extra register's the iPhone 5S's chip comes down to.

Either way, the choice between the two is more personal than anything else, I doubt anyone is buying a high-end phone these days because "its faster". Most have settled on one side or the other and are keeping with it while toying with the other in shops here and there to see if there is any really good reason to jump ship.

With root, you can flash ROMs of new versions of Android. With launchers, you can get the same UI and features of new versions of Android. Android is like a jailbroken iOS device on steroids. I can make Android look and feel exactly like new versions of Android if I want, even if my Android device doesn't support the new version of Android.

I didn't say Apple isn't ahead of the game, in fact I know they are. However, Android isn't as bad an option as it was four years ago.

That picture from Business Insider is kind of hilarious. The Samsung is clearly turned up to full brightness, while the iPhone must be on one of the lowest brightness settings? Makes the iPhone's screen look dimmer and duller when the exact opposite is true -- the iPhone is brighter and has a much better-quality display overall, even if it is smaller.

Don't forget nexus 5 has horrible battery life.

Samsung markets too many products and it confuses the consumer, and Apple dominates in the Dec quarter, which typically happens. Samsung dominates in the Summer quarter, which is typically a slow quarter. Which would you choose? To dominate in a slow quarter or a busy quarter?

If Samsung was smart, they would simply get rid of their aging products which lose money. Being focused on market share and not focusing on profits is a self destructive business partern Samsung has. They think dominating by market share is more important, whereas making sure they are maintaining good profit margins is far more important, especially when you are going after the market segment that actually HAS money, SPENDS money and generates decent profit margins. The low cost phones LOSE MONEY. That portion of the market Apple is not interested in, because one can get a used iPhone on the cheap if they don't have enough money for a newer model.

Well said. It is easy to inefficiently grow market share with marketing. I am interested to see the effects of a marketing pull back though. It may end up putting them back lower than before.

Samsung's marketing did allow them to take over the android space though, and that alone may have made the over marketing effective.

Well I used to love iPhones will I learned of all the DLNA features on a Galaxy device then I was sold. Then there was no need to use iTunes, drag and drop file system magic.

I will be upgrading from my Galaxy S4 to an S5 - if Apple didn't force you to buy Apple TV for DLNA features i'd definitely jump at the chance to own another one unfortunately they restrict such luxuries which I believe they could easily incorporate into iOS.

The news of a larger screen iPhone is tempting as having used a 5 inch screen device I couldn't go back to even 4 inch.

I have an iPad Air to compensate my loss of being an iPhone owner. I believe the iPad is the best tablet on the market.

All the iPhone lovers can say what they want about the Samsung brand but it's absolutely fantastic and there is many features on them that would enhance iOS.

I have no idea why owning an iPhone makes people believe they are a cut above the rest, the phones are just as expensive and anyone who can afford either has freedom of choice.

Id anyone surprised by this seeing the new Galaxy Note ad ?

It is trying to emulate Apples ecent iPad ads in ahowing what a device is good for, except this ad telsl you nothing about the tablet or even seems to really focus on it feeling like a tourist holiday information and the tour guides just using some tablet.

It all lacks anysense of real purpose.

It's all funny as so many people seem to also forget apple would be nothing without Samsung to r&d and made their hardware.
Also other companies for allowing ther software to run on apple hardware.
Apple are in everyone else's debt in reality.

I think if that was the case, then Apple would find an alternative supplier... regardless.

Once Apple releases larger iPhones, Samsung could find even more sales lost to Apple as many return to iOS.

After that going forward all makers will suffer from the fact most smartphone owners are less and less motivated to upgrade.

what features would enhance iOS ?

I am starting to believe this is a very important Spring for Samsung from an overall perspective. The pressure is on them now to create something to differentiate themselves from Apple and other Android phone makers.

The two I ever used were Pen Window (needs a stylus) and multitasking windows. Aside from those two, TW is 800MB of pure crap I don't need on my phone.

They seem largely incapable of such a feat. This should be interesting.

I must admit I do prefer the size of Samsungs devices, their screens are great, but I've never been comfortable with Android let alone the mods Samsung make to it. Like you I'd be very interested in an Apple phablet.

i wonder how many they sold?

4?

what features would enhance iOS ?

Well iOS7 introduced Swipe Up short cut functions which is entirely like android I welcomed that for my iPad with open arms.

DLNA functions - when watching video 1 touch of a button it plays on my Smart TV without buying an extra peripheral. I can also screen mirror my phone on my TV.

Drag and drop files.

No file sharing restrictions.

Widgets (i'm sure this will be shot down even though it's great), some have great functionality especially music player, torch, alarm clock.

Probably some more but that's all I can think of on the spot.

Actually, you need to read before you type. My next sentence specially addressed that Samsung also sells the Note and that there are a handful of other decent Android handsets out there. Both Apple's sales (50 million+) and Samsung's are for the entire planet so we are comparing Apples to apples here. Now we don't know for sure that Apple sells more $500+ handsets than all Android manufacturers together, but if the S4 is selling that poorly it is certainly suggestive.

You can not really compare quarterly sales head to head for phones that launch 6 months apart. I'm sure Apple will end up ahead no matter how you compare but comparing launch quarters would be more meaningful.

If you want drag and drop then check out iTools. Just make sure you install iTunes, because it uses the same driver. I stopped using iTunes since I started using iTools. Great software.

Like I said. I can't load any 3rd party software on my work computer. IT will send a email to my supervisor. Pretty embarrassing when that happens. Company is worried about viruses and malware.
