Disagree.

In that case then I think we can all ignore your views from now on. If you can't even admit that the best smartphone is a totally subjective choice then its pretty pointless debating anything with you. Most extreme case of 'Apple-tinted glasses' ever.

I like Apple products, but the iPhone is just not the most suitable phone for me, and therefore not the best for me. Or are you telling me that I'm wrong, I don't know what I'm talking about and that you are the all-seeing oracle when it comes to me deciding which phone is best for me.

I'm thinking of buying a car next month. Could you tell me which I should buy, then I won't go and waste my money on a model that I think is best for me.

(Oh wait . . . it'll kick in *next* month. They promise. No, really.)

iPhone 4S "achieves the impossible", takes market share from Android, accounts for 42.8% of all October mobile phone sales

“The Apple iPhone 4S accounted for 42.8 percent of all mobile phone sales in October and helped the iPad-maker to further increase its market share [in the UK],” Matt Warman reports for The Telegraph.

“The latest smartphone data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows, however, that three quarters of the sales were from existing Apple users upgrading their handsets,” Warman reports. “Just 14 percent were upgrading from the iPhone 4 to the newer 4S.”

“Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at the panel, said that overtaking Android, even for just a month, was ‘a feat many thought impossible for Apple,’” Warman reports. “Over the last year, Apple sales ranged from 20.8 percent to 18.5 percent, and then up to 27.8 percent. The most recent rise was at the expense of Android, whose share fell over October from 49.9 per cent to 46 percent.”

There is one iPhone release a year, I would expect to see a surge in the first one-two months after release. Even more this time due to the delay in the 4S release. Another example of poor use of statistics in the media!

No problem, then. The massive drop comes just after the holiday quarter. Given them a little more time. Watch for it!

Ridiculous. Of course it grabbed marketshare. There wasn't a new iPhone in over a year. And what does marketshare have to do with the commercial anyway. Your stats only further prove how spot on the ad was. Well done.

Exactly.

The stats you quoted were for October.

The Samsung ad wasn't shown until November... at least in the US. Are you claiming that it was shown in the UK the month before?

Otherwise, what relationship do they have?

As your link said, Android was still at 46%

The article also noted the following, because most (3/4) of those iPhone sales were upgrades to exisiting iPhone (mostly pre-iP4 according to the stats) users hungry for a new model:

“While unwavering loyalty is clearly great news for Apple, it is likely to be a relief for other smartphone operators.

With Apple predominantly driving sales from within its existing customer base, it leaves the field wide open for the likes of Nokia, BlackBerry, Samsung and HTC to focus on converting the remaining 29 million adults who don’t yet have a smartphone to their brand.”

I am currently owning a Galaxy Ace and I'm not so happy with it... at first I saw these phone and I thought it was amazing and that I could get everything and I think I became a little android fanboy. But then it started to lag, apps were closing unexpectedly and it reboots sometimes...
First, I liked the Android experience but now I know that there's something better than this phone out there. So that's why this Christmas I am getting my first (iOS) Apple product (i already owned some ipods) and I am so excited and I really can't wait to see how it is.

The ad was funny but I know lots of people with iPhones and they're not like the people in the ads... I know even some people that doesn't have any apps, they use it just like a normal phone.
Samsung wants to promote their products lying. For example, In my Galaxy ace the ads were saying that it had flash, it was even the icon in there, but after a week of buying it i noticed it hadnt, and there aren't so much android phones that can play flash, there are only a couple, android doesn't have flash integrated, and some devices are not compatible...

I am a bit dissapointed with samsung and i thought they would promote their products in other way, not making fun of iPhone/Apple fans...

(Sorry if my english is bad or something, I'm from Spain ^^)

That's true. Some people never update their phones or get any new apps.

You might be confused because the browser has three plug-in settings: never, on demand, or always.

Most of the time it's preset to "on demand", so all you see is a little arrow icon that you have to tap to enable Flash for that page.

That's the thing about these Android ads. "Biggerbetterfasterwowwowwow" with no substance behind it. They go on and on about how it has a bigger screen and better processor, or whatever...but what matters is the software/user experience, and the integration. They know they don't have the edge there, so they just tout the physical features.

Because people can understand physical features. User Experience is subjective.

But I agree that most android ads could do better at portraying functionality vs coming off like a movie trailer and such.

Exactly. The majority of smart phone buyers are not up to date on the newest snapdragon processors, or Tegra 2, or for that matter A5. All they care about how easy it is to use, what unique feature does it have over the other phone, and how well it will integrate into their lives.

User experience > tech specs when you want to sell something to the masses.

I finally saw the commercial live on tbs and what they showed was an edited version about 30 seconds long. None of the parts that seemed insulting were aired on television like the barista joke.

Apple Response

Apple should totally retaliate by making fun of the people waiting in the long lines for the Galaxy S.... oh wait that won't work!:D

GS2 is a popular acronym, you can't deny that.

Repeat i4s and GS2 a few times. Tell me which one is easier on the tongue.

I certainly can't deny the popular acronym.

They're both three syllables. My tongue is only engaged on one syllable for i4S (s) and all three for the GS2. My tongue says i4S is less work. What do I win? Wait...what do you win?

the best smartphone is a totally subjective choice

QFT. So many people don't get it. I'll enjoy my 4S, you enjoy whatever is good for you - there's enough enjoyment for both of us.

I don't understand how you square comments like this with the fact that Samsung has such large market share. If they're delivering that many phones without people standing in long lines- well that seems like a good thing.

The other thing is that negative ads work. That's why we seem them in politics. I don't think Samsung is aiming for fanbois - they're lost to Apple. As their brand is probably less sensitive to emotion, the negativity will hurt Apple more than Samsung and probably works well on the margin.

It seems that the reason Apple fanbois are so offended is the fact that this ad is so funny. Already known as hyper sensitive, the ad pushes all their buttons.

By noticing that Samsung products just don't have any real buzz. His point was that you can make fun of people standing in line to buy a iPhone only because they DO. Because there is no buzz around Samsung phones, there is no line. Trust me on this one, Samsung would rather have the buzz and the lines. They don't, so they make fun of the people who buy from the company that does. In the end - a losing strategy. "We don't have the industry buzz, or phones people will stand in line for, but buy from us anyway, or we'll make fun of you."

Sorry - have to disagree. It was stupid when Apple did it with Lemmings, and it's stupid here. Ads that poke fun at people who like a product that is in just about every way superior to the one you are selling (or at least on par) is just bad policy. It makes Samsung as a company look petty and vindictive.

this thread has enlightened me... there are apple fans/users who can see humor and don't look at apple like a relative or a god and see both sides of an argument then you have fanboys who refuse any logic, any humor that depicts apple or them in a bad light... there are ppl in this thread actually suggesting apple sue over a mocking ad and don't see that the ad wasn't made for iphone cult members, it was made for people open to switching devices not those who will die clutching their iphones...

i'm new to apple less than a year in with an ipad and a mac but i came in expecting the worse a forum full of apple is the ruler of all types... it's nice to see there are those who think logically and can just like/love apple products without being cult-ish...
