Most hyperbolic statement ever.
[doublepost=1551563607][/doublepost]

It's not strictly an either/or. I think that's an important fact that both "sides" of this debate miss.

I get this can be useful as an industrial product. But as a consumer product it’s not even Google Glasses v2.

At least I can see a time when the tech and software for google glasses to be viable on the consumer side, but folding screens are way dumber than 3D televisions or Google Glasses ever were.

Android tablets have higher market share than Apple tablets. If they have failed what does it say about iPads?
I hate pointless discussions like this, but for the sake of clarity, there are few GOOD Android tablets. There are lots of cheap tablets, Fire tablets, etc. I don’t know of many Android apps that have actually been designed for the larger size (and it does make a difference). For quite a while it’s been, if you want a good tablet experience (not a blown up phone) get an iPad. Not that iPads don’t have weaknesses, please don’t twist my words.

Both of the $1800+ products I've seen with these seem to bend the display the wrong direction leading to a cumbersome experience. They should fold in the other direction.

Folding the screen "in" would make zero screens available when folded. Is that what you expect/want?

thank u, next

Apple should focus on its own microLED and not rely on other companies.

Every Apple product since 1976 has used parts from other companies, with the Apple twist added on top. Custom chips, working with suppliers to optimize parts, rejecting anything below a certain standard (ie. screen panels), etc. That's what has separated them from regular PC vendors... they don't just buy off-the-shelf products and slap together a computer.

Android tablets have higher market share than Apple tablets. If they have failed what does it say about iPads?

I guess it says a lot when the only reason why android tablets even exist is because of their low prices, while Apple is able to sell high-end ipad pros at laptop pricing, and the market laps it up.

Let’s go one step further. The iPad enjoys quality apps such as lumafusion (video editing), ferrite (podcast editing), procreate (drawing), Ulysses (writing), GarageBand (music editing) and affinity photo (photo editing) precisely because the user base is there.

Where are the Android equivalents?

Yes, while the number of ipad users is smaller compared to the total number of android users worldwide, the number of ipad users who are willing to pay top dollar for such quality tablet apps is ultimately way higher compared to Android. This is why developers still prefer to not only develop apps for iOS first or exclusively, but also dedicate noticeably more care and attention to ensuring their apps are better optimised for the iOS platform compared to their android counterparts.

First, because the install base is there, and second, because we ipad users are willing to pay. It’s a virtuous cycle that is noticeably missing on Android.

Which brings us back to the original point - the only reason Android tablets sell is by offering them at low prices. People don’t want to pay $200 for an android tablet. What makes you think people will pay $2000 for what is essentially a (very small) android tablet, when it will still be subject to all the issues that made android tablets flounder in the first place?

Only in outdated OS like iOS. In other OSes, well designed apps use all available space automatically.

App developers need to actually develop their apps to work on a tablet's screen. It's not "automatic" without the developer actually doing the work. iOS is not outdated in that respect. If app developers have failed to upgrade their apps to support larger screens, that's on them. Until then, an iPhone app will run just fine on the tablet, just not without taking up the full screen. That's not a limitation of the OS, but nice try.

I hope Apple goes the route of every other foldable that has been shown this year - display folds on the *outside*, not the inside. On the inside, you have to maintain a certain radius of the screen curve to avoid breaking, which ends up with the folded device having a gap (like the Microsoft Surface Book.) In a notebook-style design, that may work, but not for a phone you put in your pocket. Plus the Samsung Galaxy Fold has a tiny screen on the outside.

No, I hope if they go the folding screen route, they put the screen on the outside.

You have no way of counting. Neither Huawei nor Samsung phone is on sale. The reason Samsung is trying to push these foldable displays to apple is simple because they are not going to sell their phone in any meaningful capacity and if apple is not going to come in and make it popular and cool development in foldable displays in phones will simply stop.

That's a very shallow definition.
I agree with you and so does Woz.

Features are not innovations.

If I come out with a more complicated, 6 step way to put toothpaste on a toothbrush, it doesn’t mean I’m innovative or mean it beats squeezing it out of the tube with my hand.

To summarize, Woz said:

1) He admires Tim Cook
2) Tim Cook has excelled and made products the public wants
3) Apple still innovates
4) Features aren’t innovation
5) Steve Jobs would be proud of the company today if he were alive.
6) Apple still puts people above technology

But all you guys know better than a founder of Apple.

I do game actually... none of the games I play even support it. I also don’t know a any people who game with VR. It requires a very and expensive powerful setup to support the graphics and processing that VR demands.
What? No it doesn’t

Entry lvl gpu is a 1060

My 1080 i bought for 250 used is letting me go max setting for most games in vr mode, playing airplane game with Vr is a bless

The use case is really simple. People don’t like the inconvenience of multiple devices. It’s an innovation of convenience.

I think you’re going to find that an awful lot of people don’t find it “stupid.”

I’m pretty sure people would be impressed if Apple went on stage and pulled a folded 12.9 inch iPad out of his front pocket.

I’d be impressed simply seeing an Apple w/ a pocket!

This Apple wouldn’t even have to be on a stage, or pulling anything fancy out whatsoever... that just sounds awesome. ;0)

It says that the iPad is the best tablet. Android phones are much closer to the iPhone than Android tablets are to the iPad. Not even close.

I'd feel better if a company "asked" me, instead of forcing it down my throats like Samsung does.

Just because we're proud of our achievements, we know you'll be too... How do they know that? i wonder.
But it doesn't matter... we know you'll say "yes".. you always say "yes.

Apple may be not in this game now, but they will be.

Asked you what? Forcing what down your throats?

Samsung would be assuming you liked it because we have to offer it to others

What about companies going to "them" first if they want it? and those who don't ... well that's up to them..

Companies can say "no", but the company who designs a phone has a play in this as well, and should be the front line.

I’m sure Samsung didn’t show up unwanted and try to force their way into apple headquarters. Undoubtedly Apple asked for samples and had to agree to non-disclosure agreements even to see it.

But Apple didn't come up with this out of nowhere either... Apple stays away from firing up the media, and their good at that... But unfortunately, that's the only thing their good at.

Apple users will sill be Apple users tomorrow if they never came out with a fordable display.. Its not a big drop..

On another note, Apple already have a foldable device, the new iPad Pro

Now that you bring it up, I wonder what became of that uproar. We have heard nothing since then. Did all iPads magically stop bending all of a sudden? If it was a genuine problem, I would imagine we would have heard more about this issue by now.

I called it back then. More clickbait news by news outlets eager for clicks and ad revenue.

There will be a market for foldables in some amount. They would serve a purpose for certain users in certain use cases. On major problem is going to be the look and durability of the screen. I have coworkers who have Motorola phones with plastic surfaces. They look ok at first but soon start to get haze scratches. Also the feel of the screen is not nearly as nice as glass. If you need a foldable and don’t mind the trade offs, then it may be a good choice. But they will never be the standard. There will not ever be a time when most phones are foldable.
