Which company has most of the smartphone sector profits?
Apple by a huge margin.

And folks, that's the most important thing.

Of course it is! Approaching 200 billion in cash because gullible fools like us will fork out insane amounts of money for items like a stainless steel 'link bracelet'. That costs even more than the watch itself. Utterly brilliant and I hasten to add that NO ONE IS FORCED TO BUY APPLE PRODUCTS! ;)

Seriously some of the responses are mad on here

Does anyone really care who is number one at all? does it make you feel ultra special? is your life better at all? why does anyone care.

And some of the crap some people come out with regards Samsung is as laughable as saying apple is doomed

I watched this video the other day and was suprised by how seriously big Samsung is as a whole, i suggest people take a look and educate your selves about the competition before spouting such hyperbole.

YouTube: video

You'll still get some people on here saying Apple should/could buy Samsung lol

Being the world's largest doesn't matter if you're not also making the most profits. By all accounts, Apple seems to be dominating in that category.

Well of course it doesn't matter now, because it is no longer Apple....last quarter however it mattered a lot.

Samsung overtakes...... Title of the world ?

I wonder who will get the final punch *watches anxiously*

Good to see samsung making a comeback. Sure i prefer iOS but competition is good!

----------

Well i find it funny that when it comes to Apple's earnings and numbers everyone and their mother seems to act like they own stock in the company but if its another companies numbers then its just dismissed....

Your idea of a comeback is less profits and units sold while the overall market is still expanding? I like you, you are a funny guy.

"Galaxy" may still be a strong branding now if Samsung didn't poison it permanently by slapping it on gazillions of overpriced and crappy models for the past few years.

Remember the tide can always and will turn on apple eventually. No one is on top forever. History shows this.

I never thought I would ever buy a Samsung phone. Well, today I have an S6 Edge. And you know what? I always hated Android. But I'm really enjoying the freedom I have on this handset. It's pretty awesome to see how configurable this thing is, and I am enjoying things such as Tasker and IFTTT on it. Widgets work pretty well too.

It feels a lot more ... personal than my iOS or Windows Phone devices. Which is odd, I never thought I would like Android. But here I am.

And it's all thanks to the S6 Edge. Man, this thing draws attention. I've never seen so many people gawk at a phone before ... well, not since my original iPhone which I got on launch day!

Congrats, Samsung and Google are doing a good job, I personally find little value in what you describe as reasons for purchase, I have many other tech items that integrate tightly with my phone that android Just doesn't have and prefer to be invested in over a single item like a phone which is just a small part.

Quantity or marketshare don't mean jack if your profits are falling..

Not always true. In many cases a business will eat losses on order to gain market share. Granted, this does NOT always work in the long run but it's a viable tactic. The "loss leader" concept that retail stores use is kind of the same thing. They get you in the store and hope to sell ya other stuff or upsell you altogether. With phones it's getting the hooks into the buyer or into the ecosystem per se.

When it comes to phones, Apple makes out great because their app library and profit from it is so massive. However, they need to sell phones to reap the benefits of the App Store profits. So, Samsung selling more phones isn't good news for Apple.

However, Apple is doing JUST fine.....no worries. :D

Samsung's been selling more phones than Apple for 4 years, so not sure what your saying there. The low end phones they sell are barely usable as smart phones and most of Android profits go to Google. Samsung's profit have gone down the tube, while Apple sold 40% more devices (61M) and capture over 90% of smart phone profits. Don'T see any silver lining there for Samsung.

Apple makes a ton of cash from the App Store, but their most profitable income earner is the phone itself. Samsung doesn't make money on the Google Play store. Your point is invalid.

Samsung's entire mobile division made $2.5b last quarter (which is a YoY loss on the same quarter - they're selling less phones from the year ago quarter). Apple made over $9b profit on just the iPhone in the same quarter. Apple had $5b in revenue from just their 'services' category. Comparing Samsung's "flood the market" strategy to Apple's is obviously Apples to Oranges when it comes to profit, and something I'm sure that Tim and Co are not terribly concerned about since they're selling a metric sh^7-ton of phones in China now.

My point is that it is a lot harder to sell a high end device than a low end one. Just comparing the number of units without considering the quality is like saying that Hyundai sells more cars than BMW.

Please don’t confuse nicer, more coveted or more expensive with quality.

And McDonald's sell more burgers than that premium steak house at the end of your street, who use finest organic beef from cows reared by the Amish.

Surprise surprise.

Tasker is the BEST app for any smartphone, bar-none. With it, you can do anything..:)

True that. But I am willing to bet that many more companies will bite the dust long before Apple does. I am looking at you, Microsoft and Google. :p

If microsoft knew how to hold an event (I know first hand that they don't, I sat first row at their CES Keynote a few years back), you would have seen that they really made some cool advancements across their software portfolio yesterday. Google... well, they're good at advertising..

This?

My bad. I meant to include "on Apple.com".

Totally okay dude. No worries. I need to apologize for the snarkiness in my quote. I just got so tired of repeating the $299 price the other day. I kept thinking, if I can find this on the internet, then why is it so hard for others.

Funny you mention Apple.com. I have never made a purchase from Apple.com or an Apple store. I've used the store and website to window shop, but I'm fortunate that within a 3 mile radius I have a Best Buy, Fry's, and my favorite Microcenter. Then there's Amazon.

There's really no excuse for Apple not foregoing ~$3 profit per device to give it 2GB DRAM to improve the user experience and make it more future proof for future iOS upgrades that takes more resources.

"Future proof" now there's a word stock holders don't want to hear
