Perhaps the Samsung Portable SSD T9 will come with 4 TB and 8 TB capacities, based on these internal ones:

Samsung's first 8TB SSD for mainstream PCs is the 870 QVO

Samsung Electronics Debuts Industry-Leading 8TB Consumer SSD, the 870 QVO

Hopefully soon!!!

I thought the T portables were based on the 860 EVO SSDs not 860 (now 870) QVO ones?

The T9, as of now, is an imaginary product. Samsung has trademarked the name, but the T7 was just released.

I know that, but that's not really the point I was making either.

Would Samsung trade performance for capacity in this imaginary product? I'm doubtful.

Does anyone know if the 2017 iMac 27in retina machine can take advantage of the faster speeds offered by the Samsung T7 as opposed to the T5? Can't find any info on the type of USB 3 it has. gen 1, 2 or what?

Excellent! I was trying to divine the info I wanted from the 'System Report' info on my iMac. But follow the link above and it says 'USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps) which means there's no point buying a Samsung T7 as it will only work fast with a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection. So I shall buy a Samsung T5.
The T7 will connect to your iMac at 10Gbps. It will be faster than the T5 by quite a bit. Also, USB 3.1 Gen 2 and USB 3.2 Gen 2 are exactly the same thing. 3.1 was renamed, for some reason. https://www.cnet.com/how-to/usb-3-2-explained-making-sense-of-current-and-confusing-usb-standard/

Great info! Thanks for the help. I'll have to save up my money...

I have a Samsung 860 Evo SSD in an external enclosure, and putting it into one capable of Gen 2 speeds (10Gbps) was a notable difference to the previous one that capped our at 5Gbps - even though the SSD is bottlenecked at around 6Gbps. So... the T7 should be noticeably better than that.

Thanks. More great info. I have iMac with a Fusion drive. The spinning drive gave up just one month out of Apple Care. Anyway, I had it upgraded to an SSD. Super fast now. So want to get an external SSD to back up to and boot from now. The only trouble I had was installing a fresh copy of Sierra back onto the new internal drive configuration. Had to set the clock back in terminal. (I have to use Sierra to run certain programs – don't ask!).

I got a Samsung T7 Touch. Very satisfied. Only problem is that according to Disk Utility and DriveDX) it doesn't support S.M.A.R.T reporting so can't keep an aye on its lifespan. Any ideas? Have formatted it to Mac OS Journaled )Extended)

SMART reporting via USB isn't supported by macOS.

Thanks for the reply, but that can't be true. I have four external Seagate hard drives that connect via USB 3 and Disk Utility and DriveDx show their SMART status. Also, the Samsung T7 is connected via a USB-C to USB-C cable, as is the Samsung T5 I have yet the SMART status of the Samsung T5 shows up.

Did you try Drive Scope?

Did you try Drive Scope?

Thanks, but tried Drive Scope and the the T7 doesn't even show itself in the left hand 'Device' pane with my other internal and external hard drives.

How is the T9 still not a thing? CES 2022 is over and it has been two years since the T7 came out. Can we at least get a 4TB T7? I love the form factor and reliability of my old 2TB T5 that I dropped a bag on back in 2017 but I really need more space now. Considering alternatives from WD now…ugh. Might build my own faster one with a TB enclosure.

Well, the 4 TB model is here as T7 Shield:

Samsung Portable SSD T7 Plus - Samsung Portable SSD T7 Touch - Samsung Portable SSD T7 - Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield
Was hoping for an 8TB model!

I think Sandisk will release an 8TB portable SSD soon. Let's hope it doesn't take too long for Samsung to catch up.
