Cuban.... come on brother. It's a simple number progression. Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4... you see where I'm going here. I'm going to step out on a limb as say their next phones will be S8, S9, and S10.
What you think you see is purely coincidence. One that you see will disappear if Apple continues their naming convention. The iP7 will match the S8 equivalent. The iP7S will match the S9 equivalent. The iP8 will match the S10... and so on.

This. Exactly.

Apple has been all over the board with phone names: 3G, 3GS, 5S, 5C, SE.
Samsung has been completely predictable so far: S, S2, S3, S4,S5, S6,S7

Neither is better than the other. But saying Samsung copied Apple's naming is pushing it a bit.

You realy don't know how the "new" iP will look? New processor, better camera and wicked antenna bands, INNOVATIVE.

What's so innovative about the S7? Clearly not the design. There's no 3D Touch, even. It has a new processor, better camera and wicked antenna bands.

Let's not confuse business cycles with product innovation. They had a large base of users who passed on the S5 and S6 because what they had was good enough. That set the stage for a big upgrade cycle for the S7, and the good reviews obviously didn't hurt.

Apple will go through the same thing. They've peaked with iPhone 6 and it looks like the next big upgrade cycle will happen next year, though some expect Apple to grow in Q4. Either way, I expect the big bounce to happen next year because people love new designs.

No you didn't. You just restated what you would like to see. I asked what the comparison would achieve. As in, if we were to compare the sales of launch quarters then we would see...

What would it achieve? Incessant whining from the Samsung fans who always desperately look for some way to say they beat Apple, when in reality Apple crushes Samsung (and has been for years).

I think what oneMadRssn is talking about is the recent report I mentioned where many were claiming the S7 outsold the 6S and therefore Samsung was winning the smartphone battle by selling more than the iPhone. He's not talking about this specific quarterly earnings report, but Samsung OVERALL.

Samsung bumps the processor and camera and it's innovative. Apple does the same and they're no longer innovative.

It's not a fair comparison. Samsung and most other Android manufacturers just launched new models in the Spring. Of course there will be an uptick in sales following a launch. Apple's annual launch cycle is in the fall.

So make the comparison more apt, how about comparing the quarters immediately following a launch. So compare Apple's Q4 with Samsung's Q2.
It will be a fair comparison this September when Galaxy Note7 will beat iPhone 7 by a large number
I'm not taking any sides..I'm just saying you heard it from me first!

No Samsung Galaxy S or Note phone in history has ever come close to the sales of an iPhone. And since the Note sells less than the Galaxy S, I think your prediction is beyond ridiculous.

So the achievement would be to further flames between the most annoying people in either company's fan base? Why would anyone... never mind. Fanboys on either side are extremely annoying and not worthy of commentary. Let 'em all stew in their sycophantic idiocy.

If that's what he's talking about then he should find the appropriate thread instead of jacking this one. This thread is about this specific earnings report. No one in the thread, prior to him, even broached the subject.

Are you seriously asking what a comparison of two comparable numbers would achieve? Are you just being difficult for the sake of it?

Just like all comparisons of two comparable numbers, it would show which number is larger, and by how much. You would be able to draw some conclusions from it, confirm a prior-held theory, or disprove a prior-held theory.

Specifically, it would show who, of Apple or Samsung, sold more during a launch quarter, and by how much. You would be able to draw conclusions about whose launch sales are stronger, perhaps whose launch marketing is more effective, etc.

I did see that quote. It's wrong, but that okay.

The idea of yearly incrementing the number was started by the iphone before the Samsung Galaxy S series came out. Given Samsung's history, I would not be surprised if the idea was taken from Apple (not that there is anything wrong with that, but simply speaks to Samsung trying to be Apple like in many ways).
It's wrong pedantically and practically. Pedantically, Apple has never incremented the number in a yearly fashion. That would entail the iPhone's number to be iP, iP2, iP3... instead we have iP, iP3G, iP3GS, iP4, iP4S. Practically, it can't be considered a yearly increment when they use the same number two years in a row. When Samsung intro'd the S, Apple was bringing out the 4. Sammy had the S2 when Apple had the 4S. Unless Samsung had some Machiavellian plan, the idea of copying that idea sort of falls apart.

It was a choice between Black Panther, Laura Croft from Tomb Raider ( video game not Jolie), Wonder Woman, and Death from Darksiders 2. Might be switching to Death soon.

Note 7 definitely could make me switch. Especially from the artistic perspective, iPhone is a joke compared to Note.

Judging from youtube videos about Note 5, there seem to be really some neat and useful features in Note series.

Not being difficult. You just didn't answer the question. Your response was this: "My comparison would compare sales of devices during the quarters in which they launched." That in no way whatsoever gives an answer to what the comparison would achieve. Regardless, it seems as if your just looking for the "we're winning" comparison. It's just a restatement of the obvious. Apple sells more phones during their launch quarter. Derp. By the way a better indication of the strength of a product is it's sales compared to what it did previously.

You'd have a more valid argument if posters on this forum didn't rally a battle cry when it's Apple on the end of news like this.

I'm going to save this quote for the next time I see you not sticking exactly to the topic of a thread.

No need to save it. Just look in this thread. I'm in a discussion about Samsung copying their phone naming convention from Apple. But one thing you won't find? You won't find me thread jacking. Participating in alternate topics? Yup. Trying to change the narrative to get my so-n-so is winning fix, uh nope.

I'm not looking for anything man. I was trained as a scientist! I seek out data, to draw conclusions from it, without any predetermined bias ;). Seriously though, I don't think you're right. Samsung has consistently "shipped" more smartphones than Apple in pretty much every comparison, sometimes by a factor of two. This is mostly due to the fact that Samsung has many more low-cost smartphones worldwide. However, Apple tracks "units sold" instead, so the comparison is difficult.

Please for the love of scientific reason, do not resort to shipped vs sold. Apple counts shipped product as sold. Just like everyone else. They tell you that in their earnings reports. They've always said it in their earnings reports.

I thought, via context, you realized I was talking about flagship handsets. Apologies for the lack of clarity.

edit: Hey, it looks like the perfect opportunity has arrived for you to revive the Apple Q4 v Samsung Q2 argument. MR just posted an article that would be great for that argument.

I wish Apple and Samsung released publicly the breakdown by model, or even by subcategory of smartphone.

A lot of people wish that. Unfortunately, there's no advantage to either company in doing so. It invites too much scrutiny where currently there is none. Remember, none of these reports are for us. They are for investors who care about the overall prospects of the companies, not the minutiae.

While Samsung is improving on the hardware side, the user experience still suffers as they are not strong on software. The same issues from before still exist today. Software updates are still few and far in between. The UI is not consistent across the OS. Android is still fragmented as ever so some apps will work, others will not.

Apple has nothing to fear from Samsung and ultimately the sales numbers will reflect that in the future. It's all one big cycle.

Yes, people said that about Blackberry and Palm too once upon a time. No worries when you dismiss the shifting sands.
