Can anyone please explain what exactly is causing the shortage and why can't Qualcomm and others ramp up production (at least in the short run)?
1. covid
2. from what i hear rumor has it it takes atleast a year to set up new equipment to start pumping out chips. its a long process

I love the note series but if they z fold 3 supports the s pen then it would make sense to kill thr note line. I'm waiting to upgrade from my note 20 ultra to the z fold 3 later this year.

When I look at the Note, I wonder why it still exists? It seems they've made the S occupy the same space as what the Note had as a differentiating feature. Now that the S screen size is 24" diagonal (ok... it isn't, but it's massive regardless), the only difference seems to be the ability to slot the S Pen inside the Note, rather than carry it as an accessory with the S.

Hopefully Apple, and the rest of the industry could move to 2-year release for iPhones as well so Apple could focus more on improvements rather than meeting tight release cycles and working on different generation of devices at the same time.
Can you imagine how severe the backorders would be if almost every iPhone owner upgraded at the same time.

The iterative updates are better for consumers I think. It means when a new iPhone comes out, your 7 month old phone isn't that different.
Nah, they are not better for consumers. Every year we are "cheated" that a new superior phone is released, when the updated are in most cases not significant. I have an iPhone X and 12 Pro in front of me, and they are basically the same phone. If I put both phones in a case and give it to you, you will struggle to find the difference without looking at the specs. Unless you are hardcore user making great use of the camera, you are paying double the price to get 12 Pro compared to X, without benefiting from any additional features that actually effects your overall user experience. Bigger screen, Touch ID, Face ID, NFC, these are the kind of features that may justify updating, but slightly better camera, slightly better CPU, slightly better screen are barely noticeable updates across generations. I also have an iPhone 8 and it will probably serve me well for at least 2-3 years minimum. Certainly, the current release cycle is good for Apple as they are making a lot of money, but it is not good for customers, because we are paying a lot, for getting very little in return.

How can you feel cheated by a superior phone which isn't that superior because the update is not significant?

It is a matter of planning production and securing sufficient parts from suppliers on time. The vast majority of iPhone users usually jump between 2-3 generations, as the regular iOS updates and the quality of the product give it very long useful life. Nvidia and AMD are releasing new GPUs every single year, and here we are, without stock for months now. Car manufacturers usually sell a specific vehicle for 3-5 years before doing any sort of restyling, and there is no shortages for people wishing to buy a new car.

I explained it in my previous comment. I bought an iPhone 12 Pro and it didnt feel as a new phone to me. It was basically my iPhone X, with an additional camera (not a big deal for me) and different case design. Apart from that, both phones work and feel the same. Im not saying I was "cheated" strictly speaking, but I was left with the feeling "Why I bought this sh@t?". It is like buying a new car and getting only 10 more horse powers and slightly better headlights.

The shortage is not expected to impact Apple, as it manufactures its own chips in partnership with TSMC. Samsung will be holding a Galaxy Unpacked event next week, when it's expected to reveal a new "A" series device.
Tell that to the HomePod, iMac Pro, delayed AS Mac updates, the mini led iPad, the AirPods…

It’s a global shortage of semi-conductors, not a Qualcomm shortage.

I guess now we know why apple built stock on chips.
there was a hater saying greedy Tim is more clever than me and he trusts the „sage“ - well - considering the current situation Tim was right - the hater of course not - he was just hating.

The first half may be true, but the spreading thin of resources by working on multiple products at once probably isn’t. There are many separate departments within Apple, each working on their own thing. Hardware, chips, design, software, AppleCare, marketing, etc etc etc. They seem to be doing just fine working on and releasing products simultaneously :)
Ofc they are doing fine. They have been doing this for 10 years now. But this does not mean that it is the most efficient/adequate (or if you wish environmentally friendly) way of manufacturing consumer products. It is how the tech industry work I suppose. Look at Intel and AMD. Each year we are receive new CPUs which are 5-15% faster at most. If it weren't for the synthetic benchmarks, we would be able to test the differences between generations.

I thought they were nixing the Note series in favor of the Fold? I guess those were just rumors, although in a roundabout fashion they turned out to be true. Makes more sense, adding a pen to the Fold 3 will make it the de facto Note going forward.

And not a single REAL person cares. Pundits and the marketing establishment care since they make moola from the Samsung ad machine. But no one, no user has ever said 'I can't wait for that new Samsung!" unless they are being paid by Samsung to say it.
