How do you get it to burn to the USB drive though? I can't for the life of me figure it out! I've tried using the terminal commands to change the ISO file also and it fails using the dd command line stating that the file or directory doesn't exist.

Did you read the PDF in that zip file?

If you use a USB device
1) Please set your USB drive into a “bootable” state before starting the Performance Restoration software.
2) For assistance on completing this step, please refer to USB boot utilities from a trusted internet site.
Nice detailed instructions there Samsung. :)

If the SAMSUNG SSD 840 EVO PERFORMANCE RESTORATION DOS Software is not launched, please follow below steps to change the BIOS settings & try again:
a) Turn "ON" PC -> Enter to BIOS set-up
b) In BIOS Set-up -> Select "System Configuration" - > Select "Boot Options" ->
Enable "Legacy USB Support"

I'm sure this has been tested on a Mac.

Hmm, not having a lot of luck. I downloaded the new Samsung iso files to my macbook desktop.

Figured out how to keep parallels from taking over the cd/dvr drive. It turns out you can't do anything with the mac disk utility if parallels thinks windows has control of the superdrive.

Finally got past that point, put in a new cd-rw disk and used the 'burn' option on the disk utilities page, selected the desktop samsung file to be burned, off we go.

Except the whole burn thing finished up, went through verify, and came back with verify failed and ejected the disk. Finder shows all the files are on the disk.

I have no idea if I have a bootable disk or not, and I'm reluctant to boot the thing off of the disk and have it wipe out my HDD.

Just check out the links under
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Performance Restoration Software
section of the page

Don't think that's the Firmware update ISO. The Firmware update ISO is in the section "Samsung SSD Firmware Updates for Mac Users" and it still requires you to burn ti a CD/DVD

The restoration software does the firmware upgrade first so you don't have to apply both. Only problem... Samsung doesn't explain how to use the USB file as it's a folder with a .exe file in it that is useless on a mac. The only thing I can find online is instructions on how to convert an ISO file to a .dmg which I did... but... disk utility still won't burn the converted file to a USB and either i'm not following the instructions correctly to burn the file using terminal or it's just failing to recognize the .dmg.

Ahhhh thanks for clearing this up! Still no use to us people who don't have a dvd drive is it :(

Has anyone been able to figure out how to apply the update without an optical drive?

It pisses me off that Samsung essentially said, "We have no idea how to fix this on Macs without an optical drive, which is a lot of them. Here's a windows executable. Search around on the internet or something. Good luck."

I haven't been able to get it to boot from a USB drive..tried everything but nothing worked..it simply wouldn't boot from the USB drive.

Did anyone say that an external USB DVD drive would work?

For me - yes. I burned ISO to a dvd with disk utility. And boot from external USB DVD.

Hmmmm I just tried it and got a black screen with a flashing white cursor when I booted from the ISO..any idea why this would happen?

Have no idea. After burning I booting with Alt-key, select USB drive and firmware program started. Macbook 13, Mid 2010.

I give up then :( spent ages trying to get this working and even using the official CD method it doesn't work!

Does it wipe your SSD, as it says it will in the support PDF (Well, it says "Will or may wipe the SSD" which I take as a "we have no idea")?

The tool doesn't suppose to wipe your SSD, or intended to damage your data.

However, there is always a risk of doing a firmware update and your data *may* be damaged, it's more a warning and indeed you should always backup your data before trying.

Don't upgrade without redundant backup!

My experience is, never experiment with hardware upgrades unless you have a redundant backup of both OSX and/or your data! I don't trust Samsung (read also other manufactures) for claims in their release notes, they themselves have never tested in the first place.

Samsung overlooked the fact that a lot of 840 EVO's could be ending up in those crappy Mac Pro's instead of Windhoze (one day I'll fly away) systems.

Sorry for being so negative atm, but I just don't understand their ignorance and I'm very disappointed about it. What a waste of time for many of us.

Cheers, and YES I'm not TUI atm! :D

Hey guys, SUCCESS! I posted earlier about the Restoration tool not working on my mid-2011 27" iMac. I finally got it to work! All it took was for me to dismount and power off my external Thunderbolt backup drive. I then booted the CD and everything worked the way it was supposed to! Hope this helps those of you who aren't having any luck!

Good, then it is as hoped for. :)

So I take it that it simply is not possible to boot from a USB stick as Samsung suggests and is just blowing smoke up all our asses? I have to buy an $80 external CD drive just to apply a firmware patch because Samsung can't get the firmware right to start with?

Well I'm not having any luck at all. I downloaded the restoration package to my desktop and burned it to the optical drive. Then rebooted with the alt key - got the grey screen of death. Could not do anything, couldn't even eject the cd-r. powered down, powered back up - no eject, I ended up having to physically disconnect the optical drive, reconnect it, power up the macbook and it finally ejected the disk.

I don't have an external CD - though I have an old windows box upstairs I that is about to be recycled. I could jerk a drive out of it, have to come up with a usb enclosure though - to use once.

Found this site - which says the iso files should be renamed as .dmg files. I'll try again. I duplicated the downloaded file from samsung and renamed it as a .dmg file and burned it to CD-r.

Converting to .dmg seems to have done the trick. The fix booted up and is running.

Be angry at Apple for not allowing third-party companies access to required SATA-commands via their driver.

No hardware-level access = No firmware-update.

Same situation as TRIM.

Perhaps I should have just kept my HP Calculator?

You're absolutely in the right for that quoted part, my bad! My anger is growing a bit to much on me. Why do companies like Apple, Samsung and all others want to make a profit, despite the mishaps of their clients combined products?

Perhaps I should have just kept my HP Calculator :D and just moved on with my life in the outback of South Africa?

Life was steady then and at least the sun was shining

Cheers

Can you do this even if the 840 is in a USB enclosure?
It wouldn't for me, program ran in bootcamp and looks for Samsung SSD but it mounts as a SCSI drive. I just temporarily put it internal in Windows machine.
